2022 MLB Draft: The athletic, power-hitting Beck has a first-round frame and the tools to match. He's also shown flashes of first-round production, although he's not yet a finished product, ending the 2022 season with a .298/.391/.595 slash. At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, he's built like a prototype right fielder where he projects to be a solid average defender with plus arm strength. An above average runner underway, Beck is below average down the line. At the plate he can drive the ball with authority from the left-field line to dead-center. He shows plus-plus raw power in batting practice and got to it with 18 home runs this season, along with top shelf exit velocities, peaking at a personal top three of 115.9, 113.5, and 111.3 mph this spring. His leg lift setup generates excellent leverage, but he seems to get fooled too often by breaking balls, especially from right handed pitchers. Plate discipline remains the No. 1 knock on him, as he has 62 strikeouts against 37 walks this season. However, his power and athleticism are valued commodities and he's considered a first round prospect by most clubs. Beck is similar to the enigmatic Jud Fabian who also combines power with a less than .300 batting average, high strikeouts and above average defensive tools. With that said Beck will likely be selected around 20th overall, at least 20 picks ahead of Fabian, to a club that believes in its player development. Aaron Judge went 32nd overall in 2013 with a 21.5% collegiate strikeout rate at Fresno State, and Jordan Beck is likely to be in the Yankees conversation at No. 25 overall with his huge power and 20.9% season K rate.

Another well-known and accomplished prospect for the 2022 draft is the power-hitting Beck. He has a first-round frame and the tools to match. He's also shown flashes of first-round production, though he's not a finished product. At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, he's built like a prototype right fielder where he projects to be a solid average defender with plus raw arm strength. His throwing accuracy looks to be improving as well. An above average runner underway, Beck is below average down the line. At the plate Beck can drive the ball with authority from the left-field line to dead-center. He showed plus raw power in batting practice and got to it with a no doubt grand slam (105.1 mph EV) in Saturday's game that gave the Vols a 7-4 lead in the 6th inning. It was his seventh home run of the season. With a leg lift setup he generates excellent leverage, but he seems to get fooled too often by breaking balls, especially from right handed pitchers. Plate discipline remains the No. 1 knock on him, as he has 28 strikeouts against 12 walks this season. But his power and athleticism are valued commodities, and at this point, he's considered more of a second round prospect by most clubs. However, a continued reduction in his strikeout rate (20.8% in 2021, 19.8% current 2022) while improving his power production (.556 SLG, .239 ISO) will likely propel him higher. The right-handed hitter reminds somewhat of Hunter Renfroe (Mississippi State). Renfroe, from his sophomore to junior seasons, raised his average from .252 to .345, home run totals from four to 16, and lowered his strikeout rate from 19.3% to 14.1%. Renfroe then went 13th overall to the Padres in 2013.

Like Newell, Beck has a first-round frame and tools to match, and he’s shown flashes of first-round production, though he’s not a finished product. He put together a very solid spring for the Volunteers, hitting .271/.336/.523 with 15 homers and 16 doubles, but his strikeout rate remained high (60 K to 24 BB). He’s hitting .243/.364/.405 with two homers, four doubles and 10 RBIs in 74 at-bats this summer, and plate discipline remains the No. 1 knock on him, as he has 32 strikeouts against 13 walks. In our first two looks, Beck struck out five times, swinging through four fastballs and one curveball. But he busted out in a big way in our third look, hitting five balls on the screws that resulted in four hits, three of them rocket doubles, with exit speeds as high as 103 mph. At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Beck is built like a prototype right fielder with plus raw arm strength (though his throws can be erratic at times). His plus raw power from the right side also profiles in right, and he can drive the ball with authority from the left-field line to dead-center. With a medium/high hand setup and a big leg kick, Beck generates excellent leverage, but he seems to get fooled too often by breaking balls and doesn’t make great two-strike adjustments. But his power and athleticism are valued commodities, and he has a chance to be a day one draft pick if he can improve his offensive approach and perform at a high level next spring.

10/13/20

Strong and athletic bodied at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, Beck is a natural hitter with both balance and strength in the box. Showed above average to better raw power to all fields in batting practice. Also has above average arm strength, yet will need to improve accuracy for his arm to play at that grade in games. Ran below average down the line on a 6-3 ground out, but has an athletic stride and is likely an average to better runner underway. After being selected by Boston in the 14th round of the 2018 draft, the right-handed hitter has the size, tools and bat to develop into a top round pick for 2022. Beck profiles best to right field in pro ball and reminds somewhat of a Hunter Renfroe type.
