One of the top athletes in college baseball, McCants is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound left-handed hitting outfielder who is also capable of playing shortstop. A draft eligible sophomore last summer, McCants had a disappointing 2022 season (.236/.324/.410) and went undrafted. He has a lanky, athletic frame and is extremely projectable with room for more physicality. He has four present average to better tools in his throw, run, defend and easy raw power to all fields. In the batter's box his setup was quiet and he maintained good balance through contact and let his strong wrists work. McCants finished the series 5-for-13 with a double and triple. For the season he’s slashing .343/.429/.657 with two home runs. The greatest concern is his strikeout rate which sat at 31% last season and 26% (11 strikeouts in 42 plate appearances) so far in 2023. With all the tools and natural talent of a Day One prospect, McCants must make more contact at the plate in order to move into the top five rounds this July.
A draft-eligible sophomore by age, McCants is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound left-handed hitting center fielder who is also capable of playing shortstop. However, his middle infield days at Ole Miss look to be on hold in deference to classmate Jacob Gonzalez. McCants has a lanky, athletic frame and is extremely projectable with room for more physicality. He has four present average to better tools in his throw, run, defend and easy raw power to all fields. Taking pregame infield at both center field and shortstop, he showed a near average arm, but never really let it fly. To help save some wear on his arm, it was mostly easy, casual throws to each base from the outfield and light flips when on the dirt. In the batter's box his setup was quiet with a small hand load. He maintained good balance through contact and let his strong wrists work easily. His barrel path was uphill through the zone. All of these traits were easily evident on his towering 417' home run to center field in the second inning of Saturday's game. The ball left the bat at 102.5 mph at a launch angle of 22.5 degrees. McCants finished the series 2-for-9 with six strikeouts and for the season is slashing .265/.373/.462 with six home runs. The greatest concern is his strikeout rate which currently sits at 30%. With all the tools and natural talent of a top round prospect, McCants must add stronger production to his resume if he is to be considered in that area. It will be achieved by putting the bat on the ball more frequently. At this point McCants would not likely sign for his current draft status. In all likelihood he will return to Oxford to polish his game during his junior season and increase his value.
Mississippi commit. 6-foot-3, 170-pound left-handed hitting middle infielder, lanky, athletic frame, projectable with room for more physicality.. Quiet, confident setup at the plate, little pre-pitch movement, loads hands back, maintains good balance through contact. Strong wrists work athletically, barrel path is uphill through the zone. Gap-to-gap type hitter, with added weight will have legitimate pull-side power.
