3/27/21

Long and lanky at 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, Mason Hazelwood is a funky arm action lefty who lands open and throws from a low three-quarter slot. It’s a reliever-type look with good deception. He departed game two of the series while making his warmup pitches to begin the fourth inning due to forearm soreness, but sat 88-90 mph with his fastball during his 59-pitch start. Hazelwood also mixed in a flat 74-75 mph curveball and threw an 80-81 mph changeup, mostly when even or behind in the count. For the season he’s 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 25.1 IP.

6/15/16 - Max FB: 87, FB: 82-87, CB: 62-67, CH: 76-79,
6-foot-6, 211-pound LHP has tremendous upside, arm action is long and works through a ¾ slot, fastball showed occasional effective cutting action, showed a much improved curveball with 1/7 action and some depth that he was able throw for strikes, changeup is a solid pitch that he has a feel for, threw two hitless innings with one walk and three strikeouts (two on FB, one swinging on CB) in his two innings of work. Hazelwood’s current velocity and upside make him one of the top uncommitted arms in the 2017 class. He has the potential to develop into a dominant college pitcher.

60 Time: 7.17, Position Velocity:  IF-88, Exit Velocity: 90
As a position player, hits from a slightly closed stance with a long stride, big uppercut swing, has raw power to the pull side, went 2-for-3 in game play with two singles, good athlete for size, stole two bases. Has soft hands at first base and uses athleticism to his advantage at the position, big arm strength with accurate throws.

2/13/16 - Max FB: 89, FB: 81-87, CB: 57-61, CH: 74-78,
6-foot-6, 205-pound LHP with an extremely high ceiling, uses long arm action and works through a ¾ slot with regular effort, fastball showed mostly some cutting action but occasional arm-side run as well, velocity was inconsistent at times, slows arm on curveball but did show a better feel for the pitch with gradual 1/7 action, changeup showed the most improvement of any pitch throw for consistent strikes with good arm-side run and some sink. Hazelwood still has some development to go through, especially with the curveball and repeating his delivery, but he’s making progress and is unquestionably one of the most intriguing uncommitted arms in the 2017 class.

60 Time: 7.17, Position Velocity: IF-83, Exit Velocity: 91
As a position player hits from a narrow stance, long stride, raw strength in swing with pull side power, creates some lift at contact. Has some athleticism defensively, soft hands, good lateral movement, long high-3/4 release, accurate throws with very good arm strength. Hazelwood is still raw at the plate but has a high ceiling.

8/2/15 - 6-foot-5, 205-pound LHP is raw but has tremendous upside, works through a ¾ arm slot with long arm action and regular effort, fastball sat 84-86 mph topping at 87, lacks feel for 61-65 mph curveball with varying action that needs continued development, showed a 74-76 mph changeup that has solid potential, also threw a 62-65 mph knuckle ball. Hazelwood has big potential with his size and velocity but will need to work on refining mechanics and secondary pitches to reach full potential. As a position player, left-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, long stride, level swing path with some length, shows flashes of occasional pull side power, 82 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.21 60-yard dash. Defensively, shows soft hands with decent footwork, long high-3/4 release with accurate throws, 87 mph velocity across the infield.

8/1/19:Throws from a low three-quarter slot and ran his fastball up to 92 with plus life to his arm side. Also showed a breaking ball with slider shape and curveball velo at 73 mph. (Seifert)

3/27/18:Another freshman, 6’5/200 LHPMason Hazelwoodshowed an 87-88 mph fastball from a L slot and a 71 mph curveball with a 2070 spin rate. (Seifert)
