4/12/16 Sat 88-90 and touched 91 for 2.2 innings before a bout of wildness spurred an early call to the bullpen. Pitches out of a high three-quarter slot with easy delivery. Fastball had some life when down in the zone. 11/5 curveball at 74-76 was sharp and had depth; chance to be a power putaway pitch for him. Also, showed a rare, firm change-up at 82-84. Can field his position as he made a nice play on a push bunt six inches off the third base line, as well as on a tapper up the first base line that he fielded, came under control, and got to the appropriate arm slot to complete the throw. Offensively, he hit two home runs (a hooked line drive to the left field corner and a lofted fly ball to right field), although both would have likely been doubles in a bigger ballpark. Starts from a slightly closed stance and takes a big, controlled leg lift to a square landing. Moved behind the plate after his stint on the mound; received well with strong glovehand and exhibited flexibility in his receiving stance.
4/18/15 While the Virginia Tech commit's work on the bump is what has people buzzing to this point (FB has been up to 91), the physical 6-foot-3, 240-pounder is making strides as a position player. He received well and used his easy arm strength to log a 2.03 in-game pop time that has room for improvement if he shortens his arm action. Is also showing a more balanced approach at the plate that resulted in two well-struck singles and three walks today.
4/11/15 Came in out of the pen and only faced one hitter. FB 88-91 and a downer CB at 74-75.
6/18/14 There are those who have a projectable frame and then there is Shane Muntz. The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder looks the part of a college upperclassmen but has three years of high school baseball remaining. He has some work to do to harness his power potential offensively, but his 97 mph bat exit velocity and compact swing give every indication that real power is on the way. Muntz went 2-for-5 with a double over the course of two games and flashed indications of his future power with a home run during his batting practice round. Muntz displayed pop times of 2.03-2.08 on throws of 80 mph from the crouch. His physical size, and athleticism at that size, project him as a 1B or RHP moving forward however. Muntz worked one inning from a high 3/4 arm slot sitting 86-88. He also flashed the makings of a solid breaking ball at 76 mph.
4/5/14 Muntz is a physical specimen at 6-foot-3, 240-pounds. He pumped FBs at 87-88 with a clean, easy arm action, got downhill well, and pounded the strike zone. He also mixed in a hard 11/5 CB at 74-77.
3/9/20:After a highly successful sophomore year (.313/.477/.674 with 14 HR, 40 RBI) the 6-foot-4, 230 pound catcher is off to a slow start this season with 18 strikeouts in his first 53 at-bats. During the Louisville series, he showed a long swing and did not seem to see the ball well. He also looked like he was guessing vs Detmers on Friday night, something that is a no-win situation. Behind the dish he is an adequate receiver with above average arm strength. For Muntz, the best is yet to come. It’s just a matter of when he finds his best game swing and gets to his plus raw power.
