8/19/16 Talented backstop impressed with an all-around skill set that makes him one of the top uncommitted prospects in West Virginia. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound left-handed hitter flashed present power to the pull side with a sound, repeatable swing. The primary catcher flashed consistent pop times that hovered around 2.00 while also displaying the ability to handle defensive chores at third base.
6/15/16 5-foot-9, 170-pound left-handed hitter took one of the top rounds of batting practice at the event. Displayed loose hands and a solid feel for the barrel from an open stance with a lift-and replace stride. Registered a bat exit velocity of 82 mph and showed above average plate discipline in game action.

College ready defender flashed a soft glove hand and advanced blocking abilities. Turned in pop times of 1.97-2.03 on throws of 76 mph from the crouch during defensive evaluations.
8/9/15 Hefner displayed advanced catch and throw skills behind the plate. The 5-foot-8, 175-pound backstop showcased pop times of 2.00-2.08 on throws of 75 mph from the crouch. The left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a leg lift stride to initiate his swing. Hefner registered an 80 mph bat exit velocity and showed a direct swing path with a feel for the barrel in batting practice.

6-29-2018: Hefner will never turn heads with his physical presence, 5’9/180 pounds, but he’s a steady performer with the right mix of skills. Slim build with a strong lower half.  He has good width to his frame and could add weight/strength in the future. Not in danger of developing a bad body type. In pre-game, throwing motion was compact and quick. Keeps ball high and gets good carry with minimal effort. Showed an advanced feel for the barrel during BP. Generated consistent line drive contact to all parts of the field. Stays behind the ball and gets backspin on everything. Occasional pull-side power but gap-to-gap approach suits him better now. Stance is wide with great rhythm and balance. Bat speed comes easily. Loose and relaxed set-up. Swing stays on plane with the ball thru extension and has a high finish. Completely rotates hips into a firm front side. Not showing much power but the hit tool translates well to the game. Batting .329 after 76 AB’s with 12 walks and 5 strikeouts. Even if the power never develops, Hefner should continue to be a dependable bat. Saw time in the DH role so it will be important to evaluate his defensive ability at the upcoming All-Star game.
