New Mexico TPG: Quick Hits (Underclassmen)

Albuquerque, New Mexico – On November 8-9 2025, the Prep Baseball staff hosted the New Mexico Top Prospect Games, featuring 70 players from throuhgout the Land of Enchantment. Held at Rio Rancho High School, the event included a full pro-style workout with a laser-timed 60 yard dash using VALD Performance, defensive evaluations, and batting practice tracked by TrackMan. Following the workout, pitchers were evaluated during live gameplay with TrackMan capturing all pitch data and metrics.

Below, we highlight the Underclass players who stood out to the Prep Baseball staff with their performances in this edition of Quick Hits.

New Mexico TPG Quick Hits: Underclass

Luke Danella 2B / SS / St. Pius X, NM / 2029

The freshman made a huge impression his first time out with us, putting together a stand-up performance during the day, one workout that followed it up with a pair of triples during the live gameplay, proving that his loud BP session translated directly into the live gameplay. The middle infielder showed off his advanced, confident actions up the middle, flashing present range to both the forehand and backhand side with the help of his 6.78 VALD 60 time speed. Keep an eye on Danella as a player who we expect on the continuing his game trend over the next few years with much more to come as he continues to develop physically.

Jace Gabaldon C / 3B / Albuquerque Academy, NM / 2028

One of the biggest underclass winners at the New Mexico Top Prospect Games was 2028 Jace Gabaldon. Coming into the event as one of the “players to watch,” he showed exactly why he earned a varsity roster spot this past spring. Gabaldon displayed advanced, clean actions behind the plate, with continued improvements in his catch-and-throw expected as he adds size, strength, and foot speed to his game. During the live gameplay portion of the event, he added a pair of loud doubles, further solidifying himself as one of the top prospects at the event, regardless of class.

Kolton Hamilton 3B / RHP / Artesia, NM / 2029

Hamilton already possesses the physical presence that adds intrigued to a young player and he used that physicality during his BP session during the Day 1 workout where he showed off his present physical strength with a 99.1 mph TrackMan Exit Velocity as well as a 89.8 mph Average exit of velocity, proving he can find the barrel consistently. Though physically strong, they’re still youthfulness in his game and presence, and we expect him to only continue to see his game trend over the next four years.

Austin Helms SS / 2B / Rio Rancho, NM / 2028

Another 2028 who put together a standout weekend was Rio Rancho product Austin Helms. After an impressive Day 1 showing that included a 96.1 mph TrackMan exit velocity and an 89.8 mph average exit velocity, he followed it up with a strong performance during live gameplay, collecting a pair of hits, including a double off the right field wall that drove in a run. Helms is a player we expect to make an early impact for the Rams this coming spring.

Ben Herman C / OF / Cleveland, NM / 2028

A player who impressed throughout the entire weekend was 2028 backstop Ben Herman. He posted projectable numbers during the pro-style workout on Day 1, including a 74 mph catcher velocity and a 95.2 mph TrackMan exit velocity, showing plenty of upside for the sophomore. During live gameplay, he commanded the game from behind the plate, consistently communicating with his defense and pitcher to keep everyone on the same page. Multiple Prep Baseball staff members circled Herman as a player to follow after the event.

Daniel Kean C / 3B / Cibola, NM / 2028

One of the biggest winners of the New Mexico Top Prospect Games was 2028 catcher and infielder Daniel Kean. The Cibola product put together arguably the top overall workout of the day during the pro-style workout on Day 1, posting the best catcher pop time at a Prep Baseball verified 1.93 seconds along with an event-best catcher velocity of 80 mph. He followed that up with a loud BP session, recording one of the event’s top TrackMan exit velocities at 98.1 mph and a 90.5 mph average exit velocity, showing his ability to drive the ball to the big part of the yard while flashing present pull-side power. Kean was a clear standout, and the Prep Baseball staff expects to see him competing at regional and national events in 2026.

Langston Leigh OF / 2B / Albuquerque Academy, NM / 2028

The 2028 class in New Mexico proves to be a deep one with the help of HD Baseball’s, Langston Leigh. At 6’ tall and just 151 pounds, the outfielder has the projectable, athletic actions that are highly sought after with a ton of room to still fill out his frame and amplify each part of his game. After an exceptional workout on Day 1, he added a pair of singles that each brought in a run. Keep an eye on Leigh as he could be a player who makes significant jumps over the next few years.

Liam Martinez SS / RHP / Rio Rancho, NM / 2028

With the two-way player, being at a premium now more than ever, Martinez is one of the players that stood out at the event as one who could be a potential two way beyond the high school level. His fastball running up to 83.6 mph to go with his breaking ball that proved effective throughout his two innings of work, he also put together a huge day at the plate with a pair of hits, including a triple to right centerfield. Still very youthful in his presence, there is a lot to like about this 2028 and he will be a close follow for us over the next few years.

Michael McMullan 3B / RHP / La Cueva, NM / 2028

One of the biggest winners from New Mexico Top Prospect Games, Michael McMullan put together a massive performance on both Day 1 and Day 2 of the event, finding himself at or near the top of almost every leaderboard that applied to him. His event best 91 mph infield velocity, set the tone for his entire weekend as he followed it up with a 98.1 mph TrackMan Exit Velocity that translated directly into the live gameplay where he doubled off the right centerfield wall. This is another 2028 that you can expect to see receive invites to our upcoming regional and national events in 2026.

Zander Montoya 2B / SS / Sandia, NM / 2028

Another 2028 that put together a standout performance at the New Mexico Top Prospect Games, Montoya put together a great weekend that put him on our radar for events to come in the future. He showed off his present, feel for the barrel during his batting practice session on Day 1 then continue to show off his ability at the plate on Day 2 with an opposite field single. Still very youthful in his presence at 5’ 7/151 lbs. there is still a lot to come with his game as we expect, added size and strength on the amplify his game to go along with his compact, smooth left-handed swing that produced line drives throughout the weekend.

Fidel Romero RHP / 3B / Eldorado High, NM / 2029

The freshman is another “gamer” that showed off his advanced actions during the Day 1 workout, then proved they translated it to the live gameplay portion of the event. His ability to command the zone one the mound with his three pitch mix, proving to be effective throughout his two innings of work with velocity jumps expected to come. At the plate, he produced a line drive filled BP Session with an Average Exit Velocity of 87.3 mph, showing off his ability to consistently find the barrel. This is a 2029 that we will have on our radar for years to come.

Canon Smith 3B / RHP / Rio Rancho, NM / 2028

Adding another standup to the already deep 2028 class, Smith now stands at a lean 6’2/142.4 lbs. with projectable actions throughout his game that only add to the intrigue with expected strength gains to come and will only amplify each part of his game. After putting together a clean Day 1 workout, he racked up a pair of hits during the live gameplay portion of the event on Day 2 including a double to left-centerfield that brought in a run. There’s a lot to like with this infielder and he will be on more than a few radars heading into his sophomore campaign.

Connor Summers RHP / OF / Eldorado, NM / 2028

The tools are present with this 2028 as he found himself near the top of multiple leaderboards after the Day 1 workout at the New Mexico Top Prospect Games. After getting his day started with a VALD 60 time of 6.84, he then earned one of the events top outfield velocities at 87 mph. His actions then translated in game where he’s single to left field through the six hole, adding to an already impressive weekend. Keep an eye on Summers as a potential two-way player as well as he ran his fast up to 83.6 mph with much more projected to come as he fills out his 5’11 frame.

Eric Yturbe RHP / 3B / Eldorado High, NM / 2029

One of the most impressive overall performances of the weekend came from 2029 infielder, Eric Yturbe. After one of the top offensive performances during the workout on Day 1 where he put up a 99.8 mph TrackMan exit velocity, along with a 95 mph Average exit velocity, proving his ability to find the barrel with ease. He then transferred that directly into the live gameplay portion where he got his day started off with an opposite field line drive, then followed it up with a no doubt home run to left field, proving himself as a legitimate bat in New Mexico’s 2029 class. Keep an eye on this prospect as one we will be inviting to upcoming regional or national events.
