Alabama Preseason All State Scout Blog: Pitchers
January 29, 2019
Alabama Preseason All State Scout Blog: The pitchers were last to show their stuff at the event but this group did not disappoint. Some guys were as advertised and some young arms made a name for themselves. Players that registered and went through the workout in multiple positions will have all of their positions included in one writeup
Grayson Bray (2019, RHP/OF, Hartselle) 5’11 190 lbs- 1.20.19- The Montevallo signee was spectacular on the mound. Live, loose arm action. Showed a fastball that sat 85–86 mph and topped at 87 mph. The breaking ball is a legit out pitch with true late depth and he has nice feel for the changeup. The fastball showed some serious ASR and he is a true three pitch pitcher. Was also 91 exit velo off the tee from a square stance and big pop to all fields. Middle of the field approach.
Reese Morrison (2020, RHP/SS, Cleburne County) 6’1 192 lbs- 1.20.19- A big time arm in the 2020 class. Showed very smooth mechanics and delivery and an athletic feel on the mound. Creates some run on the fastball and the slider shows tight spin. FB was 85–86 mph and up to 87 mph and the power slider was 76–77 mph with late action. Really clean and a very intriguing 2020 RHP.
Daniel Swatek (2019, 3B/RHP, Hoover) 6’0 200 lbs- 1.20.19- A physical, strong player that uses his strength very well. At the plate he had a narrow stance and showed good whip action with the barrel through the zone. Plus power with quick hands to handle pitches on the inner half. Quick hands and a violent swing. He was equally impressive on the mound as his fastball sat 83–84 mph and was up to 85 mph with nice ASR. Solid mechanics with quick arm action. The changeup shows nice tumble and both breaking balls are above average pitches. A 2018 that shouldn’t stay uncommitted long.
Luke Davis (2019, RHP, Glenwood) 6’4 200 lbs- 1.20.19- The Samford signee was everything as advertised with a fastball 82- 83 mph, topping at 84 mph with nice ASR. The 6’4 frame has plenty of room for additional weight as his mechanics and arm action are very clean. Big time pitchability and really showed nice downhill plane with the FB and easily commanded both sides of the plate. Showed nice feel for his secondary staff, and the slider has a chance to be a big time out pitch.
Nick Hamlin (2021, RHP/OF, Oxford) 6’2 165 lbs- 1.20.19- A 2021 RHP to keep an eye on. Showed loose arm action with a long and lanky body type. Will only progress as he adds weight and gets stronger. The mechanics and feel are already present. Showed a plus change up that really created tumble at 71- 72 mph. The FB was up to 84 mph and he showed the ability to locate it down in the zone. A definite 2021 to follow.
Baker Wilson (2020, LHP/OF, Decatur Heritage Christian) 6’1 210 lbs- 1.20.19- really like this LHP on the mound. Show the ability to really pound the zone with all three of his pitches, highlighted by a FB up to 82 mph with legit ASR. The FB also showed some sink and the CH created tumble into left-handed hitters. Nice breaking ball at 71- 72 mph and showed feel for all three pitches in the zone. Solid lower half.
Slade Haney (2022, RHP/3B, The Donoho School) 5’11 160 lbs- 1.20.19- A young 2022 prospect with solid mechanics and a loose arm action from a 3/4 slot that creates movement. Really located in the zone with the FB. Was able to mix in his secondary stuff on both sides of the plate. Command was very good. Clean arm action that will continue to progress over the next few years.
