WEST HARTFORD, Ct. - A college commitment to Stonehill has Tyler Redden excited about what lies ahead. “I’m looking forward to the environment, creating a new family with the team and coaches,” Redden said. “I want to see how I fit in.” It was before senior year of high school began when the 46th-rated 2025 catcher in New England heard from Stonehill. “They reached out and we started to connect,” the Hall High School 12th grader reflected. “At the end of summer I went to one of their prospect camps and a few days later they offered. I committed two or three days after that.” The decision was easy after thinking it through. “I was weighing how much I liked it compared to other options,” explained Redden, who was considering Quinnipiac as well as some D-III schools. “I love the coaches and I have a few friends and teammates that play there. I saw the training facilities and they’re very nice. The campus is beautiful and the people are great. I can’t wait.” The 122nd-ranked senior in Connecticut made an impression on the Stonehill staff. “They like my ability to catch, that’s the best part of my play,” Redden related. “I have a good bat, but it was definitely my ability behind the plate that stood out to them.” A life-long catcher, the 5-10 165-pounder has made strides in improving his game. “As I’ve gotten older I’ve become more of a leader and captain instead of just a player,” the 313th-rated 2025 in New England noted. “In the off-season it was about getting stronger, faster, quicker. I’m doing weight training year ’round. I’m constantly working on the field to get my swing right and behind the dish working to get all my mechanics solid and sound. Working on that day after day, week after week, in the long run it pays off.” There was assistance along the way in the recruiting process. “I went to a few Prep Baseball events and at some I did well,” Redden explained. “I took their statistics and posted them on Twitter and that definitely helped show what I’m capable of doing. Things took off after that. “I also played with Gap to Gap. Coach (Mike) McGuire was a tremendous help talking with Stonehill.” The 17-year-old also pointed to American Legion coach Sean McCann and high school coaches Scott LaRock and Nick Sanford with aiding the cause in a baseball journey that will find Redden heading to Stonehill after graduation. “What a great relief to be going into senior year and having it all done, not having to tour schools,” Redden said about his commitment. “I’m very excited to say I’m playing baseball in college.” The 21st-rated senior catcher in Connecticut believes he can make an impact at the Northeast Conference university in North Easton, Ma., located two hours from home. “I hope to stand out, play my game and impress the players and coaches,” Redden explained. “Hopefully, I’ll fit in well enough to play sooner than later.” Business will be the college major for Redden, a 3.2 student excited about the next step in his life. “I’m ready for a new environment to grow in and to just get better as a player and person,” Redden concluded. “I’m excited for that.” |
