GHSA Mid-Season Reports: 6A
March 16, 2026
The 6A Classification is one of the most competitive classes in the entire country for baseball. Coming into the season there were probably 15 teams that could be slotted into the top 10 in some way shape or form. We are nearing the halfway point with multiple looks at nearly all of the teams in the hunt, so we thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the teams in a mid-year breakdown. It seems the class could still be wide open, but Buford and North Paulding have emerged as the 2 front runners, but still have preseason #1 Etowah on a 8 game win streak. There is still so much baseball to be played and we all know region finish is uber important for the draws in the playoffs. There are so many of these teams that end up playing their best baseball in May, so until then we will just break down some things we have seen so far this year.

North Paulding
The Wolfpack have had nearly the same record the last 4 years, which shows how consistent they are as a team and coaching staff. In my one look at them this spring it is obvious that they are deep in the line up 1-9. Cade Cox and Lawson Sheffield are 2 of the leaders in this team, as well as 2 of the more consistent performers we have seen over the last 4 years. They take care of the left side of the infield as well, and set the tone at the top of the order for the Wolfpack. JR Hoffman has found his role this spring in the middle of the order and on the mound. This continues to be key down the stretch, but even more important without having Wesley Moering in the line up right now to make their mark in region play. They have a strong duo behind the dish with Skyler Lee and Casey O’Brien with both mixing time and playing big roles is the line up. Chance Williams has stepped up this spring as the leader of the pitching staff and is undefeated on the year, setting the tone early in their region series. As for the rest of the year for the Wolfpack I go back to consistency, if they can keep scoring runs like they are and throwing strikes on the mound they will be one of the top contenders come May in 6A.

North Paulding staked their claim as the potential #1 team in the state earlier this year after they took 2 out of 3 from Etowah. I saw them square off against Matthew Sharman as they scratched and clawed their way to victory as Lawson Sheffield was a key catalyst in the win. Chance Williams competed across a couple of innings and kept his team in it. Williams, as the SP1 of the rotation provides the staff with a workhorse and a high-level competitor at the top. Sophomore, Jax Foust, gave high-level innings in relief and bolsters the depth of the staff. The Wolfpack have one of the deepest and experienced lineups in the state and if the pieces on the mound can continue to come together this is certainly a team that can make all the noise and then some in 6A.

Denmark
On paper the Danes have one of the deepest rosters in the entire state as they have shown well to open the year at a 13-2 record. I have seen Denmark a couple of times now including a scrimmage against Cherokee Bluff and a non-region matchup against St.Pius X. Geno Goralski has been clutch throughout the years and is the engine that makes this lineup go. Daniel Biondo and Jax Nystrom are other pieces to note as they bring a potent hit/power combo to the offense as well. Jason Williams sets the tone wherever he is in the lineup and holds down the infield defense at the 6. Committed bats, Lee Holt and Alex Thompson, fill roles throughout while providing veteran experience. Sophomore Conner Adams gained invaluable experience a year ago and has shown well over the course of this season. Uncommitted upperclassmen Trey Bailey, Thatcher Dumford, Travis Wallace, Gavin House, and Luke Althardt strengthen the depth of this lineup. On the mound depth is key for the Danes as they roll out two senior southpaws at the top of the rotation including Kurtis Maher and Sebastien Walsh who boast high-level pitchability as they have been fixtures for quite a while. Jack Powell is a versatile piece for the staff as he competes in the zone and thrives when the lights are the brightest. A pair of sophomores in Easton Holmes and James Callaway have performed well over the years and hold immense projection as two of the top ranked RHP in the class for the state. If everyone can gel and own their role this is a team that has all the pieces to make a deep run.
-Avery
I had high hopes for the Danes in 2025, and they exited the playoffs on a tough 1 run loss against Brookwood, but they were down 2 of their key bats in Daniel Biondo and Jax Nystrom last season. With those 2 healthy, the addition of Lee Holt, all their arms returning and the progression from Thatcher Dumford I have been all in on the Danes in 2026. It took Coach Corr a few games to see how he wanted to piece the line up together, but they seem to have things rolling in region play. James Callaway has stepped up as the 3rd starter and with Jake Powell being near perfect the Danes are clicking at the right time with one of their toughest region opponents in North Atlanta coming up this week. We knew that Jason Williams and Geno Goralski would be the senior leaders in the line up and both are doing just that. Williams is leading the region in batting average and Geno is not far behind. Jax Nystrom is on a tear with 3 home runs in the last couple of weeks and hitting over .400. As long as they say the course they have the depth on the mound with guys like Easton Holmes and Owen Helms out of the pen with Sebastien Walsh being able to play multiple roles. Their region can beat up on each other at times depending on who is playing well then, but if they can get past North Atlanta they will be set up for success and control their own destiny in the region standings.

Harrison
After an 0-4 start to the spring, the Hoyas wrote the ship in a hurry as they have gone 11-2 since then including a 3-0 start in region play. Breck Hemphill has come out this spring to place himself among the players in the class, showing immense power potential throughout the spring and became maybe the most feared bat in the lineup in a hurry. Logan Arnett and Aiden Watson are two more sophomore bats who’ve established themselves as top of the order pieces for Harrison with both showing power that has shown up on a nightly basis and have even more to tap into as the development is coming quickly. Cam Spicer emerged as a huge piece early on in the spring and proceeded to stack multi-hit performances often in the 2 hole. Marcus Labouchere and Jack Johnson bring speed and power tools that strengthen this lineup with even more depth to handle the longevity of this tough region. There’s been some up and down starts from Colin White to open the year but has flashed the premium stuff and has the ability to spring together quality outings in a hurry. Jack Johnson and Davis Gurski have been reliable pieces behind White in the rotation and we’ve been bullish on this group coming together to give this team a real threat on the mound. A huge region series continues this week against Hillgrove and a DH against McEachern closes out the week, without question a huge week inbound for Coach Storey and the Hoyas.
- Ian
For me the Hoyas were in the bucket with Denmark as a team that could make a run. We got a chance to see so many of their guys in the Preseason, including a trip to Chicago with Florida commit Colin White at the Super 60. Before that we saw a breakout performance by Breck Hemphill at Preseason All-State. We also saw guys like Cameron Spicer, Alex Ehlenbach and Luke Hutchinson. Sophomore catcher Logan Arnett was on a tear to open the season and they had Hemphill showing why he is a top name in the 2028 class at Georgia Dugout Club. The rotation is led by Colin White and Jack Johnson with senior Davis Gurski rounding out their rotation. We saw multiple looks at the depth of their line up in 2 weekends at Georgia Dugout Club with some interchangeable pieces like Luke Hudson, Mason Fowles and Marcus Labouchere. They were similar to Denmark with trying to figure out their line up early in the year, but now have found some consistency coming off of a big win over Hillgrove and a pivotal series vs McEachern looming this week.
McEachern
The Indians have steadily improved over the last few years under head coach Eli Autry, and while still young, finally have the pieces in place to make real noise in 6A. Chubb Jones Jr. has looked like the frontline ace this team has needed with multiple double-digit strikeout outings against quality competition including Buford and Hillgrove while giving this team a chance to win every time he steps on the mound. Ezra Gandy has emerged as legit #2 in the rotation and provided immense pitchability that will give this team a legit 1-2 punch throughout region play. For as good as Malachi Butler is defensively, the bat has exploded this spring, offering a legit hit/power combo while pacing this offense in multiple categories. Adrien Islas looked like he was set for a big spring in my preseason look and the senior 1B has proceeded to open the spring hitting .360 while becoming a legit middle of the order presence. The addition of Jaxston Brown has provided immediate impact as the junior OF is leading the team in RBI while hitting over .400 and playing above-average defense in the outfield. Chubb has provided another big-time bat in the lineup with Alijah Asad and Jordan Stokes adding even more upperclass impact for this lineup. There’s depth in the right spots and pitching will keep this team in every series, and this spring has a chance to one of McEachern’s winningest seasons.

North Gwinnett
For a team that graduated 17 seniors from last year’s team, Coach Moity has looked unphased as this roster has started to gel in a hurry and jumped out to a strong 9-2 start, including the last 5 straight. Pitching has been a strong point with multiple players showing the ability to fill different roles including Joseph Mittaga and Banks Halcomb, who’s growing in a hurry as a sophomore. Two more sophomores in Banks DeRosa and Junwoo Jang have emerged as everyday outfielders for a team that still remains upperclass heavy and are doing so while showing immediate results with the bat. Power bats litter the infield with the group of Austin Neese, Graydon Sellers, Evan Nguyen and Ryan Taran offering the ability to flip a game on its head at any time. Getting Calvin Brown Jr. back in the outfield the last few weeks has been the missing piece to make this offense roll on all cylinders and has been flashing a speed/power threat that fits anywhere in the lineup. As the only remaining undefeated team in the region, the Bulldogs have a chance to put pressure on everyone with the next few series.

Etowah
The lone game I saw Etowah they lost to North Paulding, but the talent on this roster is undeniable. Matthew Sharman was his usual self as he punched out 12 across 5.1 IP along with adding a double at the plate and should continue to muster serious draft interest throughout the Spring. Caden Borcherding broke the game open with a highly impressive cut as he sent a no-doubt grand slam to centerfield. The Clemson commit has been on a tear across the Spring circuit with a total of five home runs on the year. The Eagles look to block out all of the outside noise as a nationally ranked team and avenge their playoff loss from a year ago and claim another 6A state title as they did back in ‘24.
-Avery
There’s no question of the talent that the Eagles possess in the top of the roster, and have started to tap into that after losing their opening region series against North Paulding. Etowah has outscored opponents 69-9 over their last 7 games including two huge region sweeps and a big win against St. Pius X at Coolray. Nate Curcio has been tremendous as he was needed to step into the #2 role in the rotation and done so with strong results. Trevor Condon has really started to swing it well as of late after a slow start to his standards and looks to thrive in region play. Big series over the next few weeks against North Cobb, Walton and Cherokee as this murderer’s row of a region will start to take shape as we finish March.
- Ian
Buford
Last week I got a chance to see the top 2 teams in the state in Buford and North Paulding. It is going to be interesting to see things play out come playoff time, but the Buford line up is strong 1-9. They have sophomore Lio Garcia setting the tone at the top and Georgia State commit Carson Reeves in the 9 hole. They gave scrappy hitters that are tough outs like Ryan Johansen and Ian Chafin. Then power threats from Ayden Lockett, Vance Bock and Payton Walker sandwiched in between. The rotation is led by Ayden Lockett, Kyle Krause and Carson Reeves with Walker Taulbee playing a swiss army knife role from the leftside. Reeves has been big for the Wolves this year as they wait for sophomore Dexter McCleon Jr. to get healthy. As we start to compare these teams in 6A it is really going to come down to the arms. The line ups are all ultra talented, and can rattle off a big innings at any moment, but the teams that throw the most strikes and minimize the mistakes are going to prevail in 6A.

Hillgrove
The Hawks showed well amongst staff across GDC and have provided more quality showings since then. I was able to see them square off against South Paulding where they picked up a victory. The offense was powered by Alan Aguilar in a 4-for-4 showing with a homerun, double, and two singles. The depth of the lineup really stands out as anyone 1-9 can contribute significantly. Kennesaw State commit, Dylan Honore, sets the tone out of the lead-off spot and brings high-level defense to the 6. Two-way production comes from names like Owen Tarentino and Ryder Bass who strengthen the depth on both sides of the ball. Chase Hicks and Max Weimann provide consistency with thump in the barrel out of the corner infield spots. Jordan Walker and Ryan Burgess supply speed and on-base threats to the lineup while offering lockdown defense in the outfield. Donovan Dortch has battled an early season injury but has been a steady performer over the years and is a huge addition to an already strong lineup. Sophomore back stop Gavin Boykin paces the offense in the middle with a potent hit/power combo and yields an advanced defensive makeup as well. The strength of this team is the pitching with a three-headed monster of committed seniors in Shane Jelenevesky, Aiden Moore, and Nahdir Jackson who give the Hawks a chance to win amongst anyone on a nightly basis. The pieces are in place for Hillgrove to go on a run and to compete at a high-level in a stout 6A class.

Cherokee
The Warriors opened some eyes getting wins over Loganville and Blessed Trinity at Georgia Dugout. We knew the majority of their team coming into the season and knew they were going to be able to compete at the plate. They are well coached and have a strong culture that they can lean on in tough games. They are tough outs 1-9 with Andre Sweet and Hudson Will setting the tone at the top. Senior, Daniel Head has really stepped up this year both on the mound and at the plate, pitching in some of the biggest games of the year. Asher Webb has turned into their go-to guy on the mound and is just going to keep getting better with the more innings he throws. Brennan Roth, Caden McGhee and Adan Cifuentes are straight up gamers that do a little bit of everything for the Warriors. Brandon Holstein has played a pivotal role behind the plate the last couple of years now and will be called on night in and night out in their catcher role. They have some depth in the line up with guys like Mason Freedman, Josiah Davis and Graham Langan that can get slotted in at any time. I got a brief look at Luke Darvish out of the pen Friday and he could be a big piece down the stretch and will throw some crucial innings. They just dropped the series to Walton, but still sit tied for 2nd with Etowah and will be motivated headed it to Week 6 with 2 non-region contests to get ready for Marietta the following week.

Lowndes
Despite falling outside the top 10 we knew the region play run was looming for the Vikings. They stack quality opponents early on that prepare themselves down the stretch. They have control of the region right now with 3 series left and the finale with Valdosta that is shaping up to have high implications with the heated rivalry already in place. They returned all their big pieces and have Matthew Kerrigan back on the mound in 2026. He leads the offense alongside senior Derrick Carter and Cason Fletcher. Sophomore Hank Drew has fully embraced his role and turning into one of the top power threats in this offense. After having Brogen Stephens on the Junior Future Games team we had a feeling he might get in the mix with hitter traits from the left side that fit right into the Vikings offense. He had a strong showing in our look on Friday in the double header against Colquitt. On the mound senior Easton Blaton has stepped up with quality starts this year and junior Brinson Rountree continues to do what he does, just like last year. Lowndes is going to be in the mix come May, as always and we will see what kind of draw they get come playoff time.
- Hudson
Walton
The defending 6A state champs have the line-up to get back where they were a year ago. They lose a couple big pieces, but they have an experienced senior group that will lean on down the stretch. Walker Killimett paces this line up as one of the top leadoff guys in the state with Devin Krohn, Logan Wideman and Todd Haley right behind him. Rylin Lyemance has stepped up and found his role at 3B and is just going to keep getting better. Ian Robertson had a strong showing at Georgia Dugout Club and will provide the Raiders with depth in the line up along with Adrian Pulido and Jack Childress. They have had a couple sophomores step up in Drew Streinemann and Ledger Jones that could really find their groove and change the game in the line up. They have the arm talent to compete, but just need to find some consistency from a few of their guys. I got a brief look at Carson McQuillen and it was electric in the upper 80s’ and will get a lot of outs for the Raiders. Jacob Saboura, Jacob Ellsworth and Chase Bredickas are going to get better with more innings on the mound and find their groove to make
