Notable Recaps from Monday

Athens (3) vs. Madison County (0)
Athens delivered one of the more impressive results of the day on Monday, shutting out 4A No. 1 Madison County, 3-0, behind a complete staff effort on the mound. Jamie Griffin earned the win with four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out one. Bishop Morton followed with two dominant innings of relief, punching out three without surrendering a hit, and Whit Griffis closed it out, inducing a game-ending double play to secure the shutout and earn the save. Athens struck early in the bottom of the first inning. JD Bailey grounded out to bring home the game’s first run, and Michael Maloney followed with an RBI double down the right-field line to make it 2-0. The Golden Eagles added an insurance run later and leaned on pitching and defense the rest of the way. Offensively, Griffis, Luke Vaughan, John Lawrence Chittam, Maloney, Hudson Marks, Chase Taylor, and Cash Stanfield each recorded a hit. Bailey, Chittam, and Maloney drove in runs, while Brady Johnston, Chittam, and Marks each swiped multiple bases. Athens was aggressive throughout, stealing eight bases in the win. Defensively, the Golden Eagles were flawless, turning two double plays and committing no errors. Chittam led the way in the field with six chances. For Madison County, Eli Cantrell and Jackson Helton each collected a hit in the loss, but the top-ranked Tigers were unable to break through against Athens’ trio of arms.

Vestavia Hills (7) vs. Westbrook Christian (3)
Class 7A No. 6 Vestavia Hills picked up a ranked win Monday, defeating Class 4A No. 3 Westbrook Christian, 7-3. The Rebels wasted no time jumping ahead in the bottom of the first. Charlie Taaffe opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, Jacob Harris followed with an RBI double down the left-field line, and Haines Bridges added an RBI single to center to make it 3-0. Vestavia Hills broke the game open in the second when Gavin Smith launched a three-run home run to right field, extending the lead to 6-0. Cooper Anderson was strong on the mound, earning the win after allowing just three hits and one unearned run over six innings. The right-hander struck out eight and walked two. Griffin Hendon appeared in relief to help close things out. Lauderdale County (16) vs. Lindsay Lane Christian (14)
In one of the wildest games of the night, Lauderdale County outlasted Lindsay Lane Christian Academy, 16-14, in an eight-inning slugfest on Monday. Curtis Ritter was the catalyst offensively, driving in five runs on four hits. He delivered a three-run double in the sixth and added RBI singles in both the third and fourth innings to fuel the comeback effort. The game swung dramatically early. Lauderdale County jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first behind an RBI double from Joe Romine, an error, and a two-run single from Carson Brown. But Lindsay Lane responded with a massive 13-run bottom of the first inning to take a 13-4 advantage, highlighted by a two-run double from Cooper Abernathy. Lauderdale County steadily chipped away and eventually tied the game at 14-14 in the sixth, with Jeremiah Hutchins delivering a key double to even the score. In the eighth, Lake Ingrum came through with a go-ahead RBI single, and Jordyn Green followed with a walk to force in an insurance run, sealing the 16-14 victory. Jacob Jones earned the win with an impressive relief outing, allowing just one run over 7.2 innings while scattering three hits. Green also provided relief work down the stretch.
