Q&A with Wake Forest Commit Grayden Seuferling

Eliott Wilk
Central Region Operations Director

Few players in the state have seen their stock rise over the past year like RHP Grayden Seuferling (Blue Springs South). Seuferling broke onto the scene this spring with the Jaguars, helping lead them to a Class 6 State Championship as a frontline arm and continuing to build momentum throughout the summer, culminating in a dominant performance as a member of Team MOKAN at the Senior Future Games. Shortly after, the flame-throwing right-hander committed to Wake Forest, but his ascent hasn’t slowed. Seuferling is now beginning to generate some MLB Draft buzz, featuring a fastball that now reaches into the upper 90s to go along with a tight, high-spin slider.

We recently had the chance to talk to Seuferling about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.

Our Q&A

PB: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Grayden: Some things I love about Wake that I noticed immediately were the culture and the staff. I've been blessed to have a great group of teammates and coaches since I was young, so that was something I really looked for in colleges I was considering. Another big part I looked for was pitching development, since I am relatively new to the mound. Wake is at the top of the list in that regard, especially with Coach Niesen and Coach Bye.

PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

G: Work hard. You will get out what you put in, so be intentional every day with every rep. Be coachable and make adjustments as well. Trust that God has a plan and that you will end up in the right place for you to grow and be successful.

PB: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

G: Not really, it was something I looked at but it wasn't a deal breaker. I didn't think I would end up going this far but I'm thankful for the incredible opportunity and the distance wasn't going to make me turn it down.

PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

G: The recruiting process for me started pretty late, a few days after the Premier Pro Day this February. It really started to heat up after the PBR Championship and Future Games at Lake Point this summer, which is where Wake first saw me pitch.

PB: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

G: Staley definitely had some tough ABs, Brody Irlbeck last year was a monster and we had a few good battles. Their whole lineup could do damage and put up good plate appearances that made for hard outs.

PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?

G: I think Jamie Billups will be another good arm to look for this year, another lefty kind of similar to Wyatt Taylor with a great junior season and some big moments. I think the youngsters Parker Ward and Griffin Robertson will make an impact this year as well.

PB: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

G: The most memorable point in my baseball career is definitely winning state this spring. Closing the last 2 innings, throwing the last strike, and being at the bottom of the dog pile is something I'll never forget. It felt amazing for all of our work and determination as a team to finally pay off. Celebrating with my guys and coaches was a blast.

PB: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

G: I think we can pick up where we left off and continue being a competitive team further down the road at the end of the season. We have a target on our backs now so we have to attack every day with the same intensity and not get complacent.
