Across the state, programs are preparing to turn the page from the offseason to the grind of a new year, with returning experience, roster turnover, and postseason expectations all factoring into the early landscape.
Each classification presents its own identity and challenges, from deep fields loaded with proven contenders to wide-open races featuring emerging programs ready to take the next step. Some teams enter the season with championship expectations firmly in place, while others carry momentum from strong finishes a year ago or look to capitalize on growth made over the winter.
In this class-by-class breakdown, we take a closer look at the landscape within the classification, highlighting the top teams, impact talent, and notworthy storylines to follow heading into first pitch. This breakdown examines the classification from top to bottom, evaluating the teams in position to contend, the depth behind them, and how the race could unfold as the season gets underway.

Others on the Bubble
Lauderdale County
Lauderdale County enters the spring as a team with a clear path to breaking into the Top 10, looking to build on the momentum it carried out of the 2025 season. After starting 7-10 at spring break, the Tigers closed strong to finish 20-15 and earn a Sweet 16 appearance. That group was young a year ago, but many of those players return with valuable varsity experience, led by Jeremiah Hutchins, Heston Parker, Curtis Ritter, Cyler Parker, and Sawyer Holden. With that core back in place, Lauderdale County has the pieces to push into contention in Class 3A this season.
Piedmont
Piedmont opens the season just outside the Top 10 and continues to be one of the more reliable programs in Class 3A year after year. The Bulldogs are coming off a 1st round playoff exit, but they enter 2026 focused on making a deeper postseason run and bring back key contributors on both sides of the ball, including Cole Austin. With a strong track record and a competitive identity, Piedmont is never an easy matchup and has a clear path to working its way into the polls as the season progresses.
Whitesburg Christian
Whitesburg Christian has established itself as one of the top programs in North Alabama at the Class 3A level over the past few seasons. While the Warriors did graduate some key seniors from last year’s team, they return a solid core and add a few new faces as they look to extend their run of strong seasons in 2026. A year ago, Whitesburg Christian won 25 games and reached the Elite Eight before falling to the eventual runner-up in the quarterfinals. With familiar pieces such as Davis Parks, Cason Hill, Joseph Haiges, and Chase Utley back in the fold, the Warriors have the continuity to stay competitive and a path to working their way into the polls as the season moves along.
Team Superlatives
🏆 Most Complete Team: Glenwood
Glenwood opens the 2026 season exactly where it finished a year ago - at the top - as the reigning Class 3A state champions and once again profiles as one of the most complete teams in the classification. While replacing the production of graduates like Mason McCraine and Tyler Sykes won’t be easy, the Gators return a true anchor in ace Hudson Campbell (Lurleen B. Wallace CC) and bring back proven offensive pieces in Carter Judah (Lurleen B. Wallace CC) and Cal Lawrence (Georgia Highlands CC) to lead the lineup. That veteran core is complemented by an impressive sophomore class featuring Nathan Malone, Rhett English, and Sawyer Moss, all ranked inside the top 35 and adding another layer of upside to the roster. Even after the losses to graduation, Glenwood appears to have reloaded rather than rebuilt. With balance on both sides of the ball and depth throughout the lineup, the Gators enter 2026 positioned for another deep postseason run as they look to defend their title.
🔥 Best Pitching Staff: Lee-Scott Academy
Lee-Scott Academy enters the 2026 season positioned to lean heavily on its arms, bringing back a wealth of innings from a staff that powered a 25-13 campaign and an Elite Eight run in its first year at the AHSAA level. The Warriors return virtually their entire pitching corps, led by Braden Martin, Barrett Cook, and Maxwell Hammer, who handled the bulk of the starting duties in the postseason, along with Davis MacIsaac, who filled a key relief role a season ago. That continuity on the mound gives Lee-Scott a reliable foundation to control games and manage series play. While pitching projects as the clear strength, the Warriors also return important offensive pieces in Easton Gregory, Harrison Snow, Haiden Harper, and Ethan Hardee among others. With depth, experience, and proven production on the mound, Lee-Scott Academy is built to make its pitching staff a driving force behind another strong postseason push in 2026.
💣 Offense to Watch: The Altamont
The Altamont enters the 2026 season positioned to make its lineup a driving force after going 16-7 in 2025 and reaching the first round of the playoffs before falling to St. James. Expectations are high with nearly every offensive piece returning, led by Grant Hartman, Tylan Floyd, Aubrey Sanders (John Hopkins), Cruz Cunill, and Aiden Owens, among others. The Knights showed last spring just how explosive they can be, scoring 10 or more runs in 13 of their 23 games and eclipsing the 20-run mark three times. That level of firepower gives Altamont the ability to put pressure on opponents early and often. With an experienced lineup back in place, the Knights enter the spring looking like one of the most dangerous offenses in Class 3A.
🚀 Highest Ceiling: Saint James
Saint James enters the 2026 season with clear expectations, positioning itself as one of the primary contenders in Class 3A and making a push toward a state championship. The Trojans bring back a strong amount of production on both sides of the ball, though they will need to replace the impact of graduated standout Tabor Offord. Anchoring the staff is Charlie Cutler (Itawamba CC), who projects as one of the top arms in the classification and also hits in the middle of the order, while Mason Craig (Stillman), Jimmy Dickens, Dawson Knowles, and John Braswell (Auburn-Montgomery) return with plenty of varsity at-bats in key offensive roles. The pieces are in place for another strong season, but the next step will be solidifying a reliable No. 2 arm behind Cutler. If that rotation support emerges, Saint James has the upside to make a deep run and challenge for the top of Class 3A this spring.
🧱 Highest Floor: Gordo
Gordo’s rich tradition of baseball excellence, paired with a strong returning core, sets what is arguably the highest floor of any team in Class 3A entering 2026. Fresh off a runner-up finish and a 26-17 season a year ago, the Green Wave continue to build on a storied program history under head coach Jonathan Pate, who owns 641 career wins and four state titles. Much of last year’s lineup returns, including Noah McDaniel, Ford Hewitt, Curtis Brooke, and Rainer Russell, all of whom hit in the heart of the order. That level of continuity on both sides of the ball gives Gordo a dependable foundation from day one. With proven leadership and experience throughout the roster, the Green Wave once again look built to make another deep postseason run.
