NEWPORT VS BOTHELL (3.30.26)
BOTHELL
Monday set the stage for a strong KingCo match-up between the visiting Newport Knights and the home squad Bothell Cougars. With some sunshine and blue skies, we were treated to temps in the low 50s for the first time in a while and it made for a great setting in this one. It was a quick paced, low scoring affair with Newport coming out on top 2-1 after 7.
First for the home team, Bothell gave the ball to uncommitted ‘27 P/INF Carson Herrick. The junior was sharp across 6 innings of work allowing only 2 ER in the first inning and then putting up 5 straight zeroes after that. He surrendered 6 H, 2 BB and had 2 K. With a long, lean and projectable frame, he’s certainly an arm to watch in the class moving forward. The ceiling is considerably high and watching his arm action plus how he moves through the delivery, it really seems like there’s a lot more in the tank for him. He also hits 3 hole and handles SS for the Cougars so there’s plenty of athletic traits to like here.

Poised, mature demeanor. Filled up the zone. Simple mechanics with shorter, tight arm action. Definitely has a jump in the tank as he… pic.twitter.com/CpmxLeRwHJ
It was a quiet day for the offense as they only scratched across 1 run in this game on a fielder’s choice.
‘28 Parks Eugster was a standout bat on this look though. He also produced one of the best OF catches we’ve seen all spring. In RF, he ranged into the gap and went full extension for a sensational diving grab. At the plate, finished 2-3 on the day and found barrel with all of his swings. Hits from a simple, upright set up with very few moving parts and loose, rhythmic hands. Quick to the ball with short levers and strong wrists. It’s more of a ‘handsy’ type swing but with noticeable bat to ball skills and strength. Impressive performance for the rising sophomore.

Caught 3 barrels and notched 2 of 5 hits for the team. Looked like he was sending us to extras in his final AB but his line drive into RF was snagged to end the game in B7

It’s a senior heavy line-up this season for Bothell but ‘27 INF/OF Rylan Edwards is having a strong offensive season so far. The junior has a smaller, more compact frame but he carries strength well and has produced quality power on our previous looks. Had a quiet game on Monday but has been a consistent contributor so far.
NEWPORT
Newport has a very young roster this season. They might face some growing pains now but I would expect this core to really mature over the next year or so.
They gave the ball to talented ‘29 P/INF Drew Lopez in this one. The rising Freshman put together one of the more impressive and efficient complete game efforts we’ve seen in a while. Finishing with a final line of 7 IP, 5 H, ER, INT BB, 8 K on only 72 pitches with 58 going for strikes. He held his FB velocity well throughout the game and still bumped 85 in his 6th inning of work. The glove side command was exceptional. He has the look of an athlete who understands his body and how to control the baseball. Extremely quick to make adjustments and get back into the zone in the rare instance that he even had a miss. Lopez also has plenty of offensive potential. Normally handles 3B when not on the bump, he was hitting cleanup on this look and produced an impactful RBI triple in the top of the 1st inning to get Newport on the board. Overall, the 2-way talent is a high end prospect in the 2029 class and his size/athleticism gives him exciting upside.

The rising Freshman was the story of the game tonight

Long, lean athlete with a protectable build and smooth actions on the mound. Competitor. Must know name in the class moving forward

The sophomore tandem of ‘28 Sebastian Unay and ‘28 Mason Malloy both added a pair of hits as well and are a key part to the middle of the line-up. Unay helped get the scoring started in T1 after a 2 out BB allowed him to score on the Lopez triple. He then added a sharp single in his next AB as well, finishing 1-2, R, BB, SB. The lefty bat has a keen eye at the dish and a polished swing. The operation has tightened up as he’s matured and added strength to his frame. Allowing him to put a quicker turn on the ball and tap into more power.

1-2, R, BB with some smooth plays throughout at SS on defense

Malloy is a strong, twitchy athlete with great burst. He showed quality bat speed on this look and in the past has tapped into his gap to gap power and flashed offensively on multiple occasions.
Two juniors who also contributed were uncommitted ‘27 OF Patrick Crowley and ‘27 3B Charlie Denger.
Crowley has great pound for pound strength and plays stout OF defense in CF. He was ‘hitless’ on this occasion but had 2 of the hardest hit balls on the day. Unfortunately they just went straight to the OF for some loud outs. Denger is multi-sport athlete who went 2-3 on a day with a 2B. Put together some quality swings in his ABs with a loose, whippy swing and compact strength.
Overall there’s a lot of really young pieces contributing for the Knights and while we’re not disregarding the current 2026 season, you should definitely keep an eye out for this group in the coming years.
