North Carolina Class of 2027: New Names Enter the Rankings

The summer update to the North Carolina Class of 2027 Rankings expanded the board to the Top 350 players in the state, reflecting another extensive evaluation period for the Prep Baseball North Carolina scouting staff. Among the additions are 70 players making their first appearance in the 2027 rankings.

As the 2027 class moves closer to its senior season, the evaluation process continues to evolve. Projection remains an important part of every player's grade, but as players mature, production and the translation of tools into live game action become increasingly important.

The summer provided plenty of opportunities to build those evaluations. Events such as the NC/SC Border Battle, Senior Future Games, and Tobacco Road State Games allowed the scouting staff to combine workout data and measurable tools with live game evaluations. Tournament coverage, Prep Baseball events, and additional scouting looks throughout the summer continued to add depth to the evaluation process.

With the 2027s now entering their senior year, our scouting staff will continue to dial into the class throughout the fall, preseason, and 2027 high school season. The latest expansion is another snapshot of a class that continues to produce new names and intriguing prospects across the state.

Below, we highlight 15 newcomers from the summer rankings update, sorted by position and then by their overall ranking.

Catchers

Cayden Woolard C / Wilmington Christian Academy, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 171 / POS: 22 Strong performace at the Wilmington Summer ID secured his spot at the Tobacco Road State Games.  Game play pushed the evaluation forward as the tool set rises in live game action.

Kellen Carr C / RHP / Gaston Christian, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 192 / POS: 24 Intriguing athlete that showed well behind the dish, at the plate, and on the bump as part of the QC Corndogs Scout Day.  Committed to Louisburg JC at the end of the summer.  Plenty or room to dream about where the tools and frame will lead him in the coming years.

Mike Feeley C / 3B / Marvin Ridge, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 196 / POS: 25 State Champion at Marvin Ridge, Feeley excelled at the Raleigh Summer ID to kick off the summer season.   Should translate as a player that makes a roster deeper with the ability to catch and play on the infield.

Middle Infielders

JohnPaul Rodio SS / 2B / Orange, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 141 / POS: 23 Development matters and Rodio has taken full advantage of feedback the past few years, continuing to trend up.  He stood out with increased strength and quickness.  Our scouting staff saw him a few weeks later at the State Games of NC where his workout performance translated to in-game success.

Kaiden Cox 2B / OF / Jacksonville High, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 181 / POS: 6 Several good workouts at the Campbell Summer ID and the High Point Summer ID led to an invite to the Tobacco Road State Games.  The tools are solid and they ticked up in the live game action where the barrel to ball ability carried over.

Third Base

Camdyn Hargett 3B / RHP / Metrolina Christian Academy, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 172 / POS: 10 Hargett exploded on the scene at the Charlotte Summer ID where he posted one of the top Max Exit Velocities of the summer.  As we tracked him into the summer we also so potential upside on the mound as he threw at LakePoint.

Outfielders

Brooks Hemphill OF / TC Roberson, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 69 / POS: 10 Earned a spot with Team Carolinas at the prestigious Sr. Future Games after a standout performance at the Gardner-Webb Summer ID.  An advanced runner, Hemphill profiles as a high level defender with strength and barrel feel from the right side.

Jack Devitt OF / South Mecklenburg, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 189 / POS: 34 Right handed hitting outfielder stood out at the Gardner-Webb Summer ID with two impressive rounds of BP.   Excellent barrel feel with the ability to mainpulate the swing while staying in his base.  Left the Gardner-Webb event and headed to LakePoint where he had a good week on the big stage.

Colton Creech OF / 1B / New Hanover, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 190 / POS: 35 Left handed hitter has phyiscal strength.  There may be room for quick growth in the rankings as we have the chance to continue to evaluate his tools in live game action.

Josiah Borton OF / RHP / West Brunswick High, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 199 / POS: 37 Still a youthful frame that should continue to fill out, Borton has quickness and strength in his hands and feet.  The swing is flat and produced hard, line drive contact working gap to gap at the Campbell Summer ID

Right-Handed Pitchers

Bryson Josey RHP / Metrolina Christian Academy, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 92 / POS: 37 Physical frame and solid mover.  There is arm strength with solid feel for his secondary pitches.  Committed to Western Carolina towards the end of the summer.

Trevor Sawyer RHP / 1B / Manteo High School, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 130 / POS: 49 Sawyer impressed at the Raleigh Summer ID and then his organizations scout day in VA, giving our scouting staff in two territories a chance to evaluate.  We also saw him in live game action at the State Games of NC.  Arm strength leads the prospect status.

Ethan Street RHP / 3B / Corinth Holders, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 173 / POS: 59 Lower slot righty with feel for the sinker / slider combination.  The bullpen at the Gardner-Webb Summer ID, plus HS coverage and the State Games of NC outing all led to an invite to the Tobacco Road State Games.  Hitters show discomfort as Street floods the zone with a 3 pitch mix.

Reece Kuhns RHP / OF / Millbrook, NC / 2027 Rankings  StateRank: 200 / POS: 62 Athletic mover and quick arm impressed at the Raleigh Summer ID, leading to an invite and good outing at the Tobacco Road State Games.

The addition of 70 newcomers to the Top 350 speaks to both the depth of North Carolina's 2027 class and the amount of evaluation still taking place. Some of these players made their mark through the high school season, while others emerged during the summer through tournaments, workouts, and Prep Baseball events.

As the class moves toward its senior spring, the evaluation process will continue. Performance will carry increasing weight, and players will have additional opportunities to establish themselves, move within the rankings, and attract attention from college coaches and professional scouts.
