Western PA Summer Open Games: Quick Hits

On July 13th, our staff hosted the Western PA Summer Open Games at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA. Over 20 players made it out to this event, providing us with updated looks and a new list of players to follow in Pennsylvania.

We begin our post-event content today with our quick hits from the event, highlighting some of the notable players from the day and their numbers.

Position Players  

+ 3B Nathan Slater (Avonworth, 2029) was the all around top performer at the Western PA Summer Open Games. The 5-foot-11, 177-pound 2029 grad posted the highest exit velocity of the event with a loud 97.2 mph. The primary third baseman demonstrated his impactful swing that produces a 60% hard hit rate with an impressive triple crushed to deep center field in game. Slater also ran the third quickest 60-yard dash of the event, coming in at a smooth time of 7.16.

    + 1B/3B Charles Taggart (Pine-Richland, 2029) posted the second highest max exit velocity at 97.1 mph and third highest average exit velocity of 88.2. The primary first baseman, listed at 5-foot-9, 197 pounds, carried his strong BP round into the gameplay. Taggart stays connected through his frame with an aggressive but controlled swing that produces line drives at a 50% clip. He roped two singles during the game to both gaps, demonstrating an ability to hit to all fields. 

      + OF Colin Doyle (Greensburg-Salem, 2028) had a very good day at the plate in both BP and gameplay. Doyle, a 6-foot, 159-pound outfielder, clocked the fifth highest max exit velocity at 93.8 mph. Doyle utilizes a calm load that keeps his head steady at the plate. Overall, his swing is very smooth and compact with strong hands that help produce line drives. Doyle ran a 7.28 60-yard dash that included the third highest 10-yard dash time at 1.66, demonstrating an advanced ability to make jumps in the outfield. The rising junior also posted the second highest vertical jump at 24.4 inches, displaying another strong defensive ability that could create some robberies with his height.


      + C Weston Cook (Moniteau, 2028) performed very well behind the plate at the Western PA Summer Open Games. The 5-foot-11, 161-pound catcher tied for the highest catcher velocity at 72 mph, but his 1.95-2.11 pop time was the event’s top mark. Cook’s BP round specifically stood out with his 88% sweet spot percentage, demonstrating his ability to hit hard line drives and fly balls. His 66% line drive rate, yet another top mark, represents his advanced sweet spot capability. The catcher’s max exit velocity was 89.3 mph with an average of 85.2 mph. Expect these numbers to increase for the rising junior over the next two years.  

      Pitchers

      + LHP Nico Fioravanti (Franklin Regional, 2027) was undoubtedly the best pitcher from the event. The 6-foot-2, 189-pound southpaw is an all-around impressive athlete. The dual-sport athlete who also plays volleyball, jumped out of the stadium with a 26.9 inch vertical. His strength was also on display with the second highest grip strength on both hands, 139.3 on the right, and 133.3 on his left. As a pitcher, his athleticism was on full display. Fioravanti led the event with a max fastball of 84.2 mph that ranged from 80-84 mph. Impressively, the fastball had 12-14 inches of IVB and -12,6 inches of HM. His entire repertoire was impressive, featuring a 72-75 mph curveball, 73-76 mph slider that topped at 2227 RPM and 13-14” HM, and a 80-81 mph cutter. During his multi-inning outing, Fioravanti mowed down his opponents with a smooth, repeatable delivery. The unranked and uncommitted lefty will certainly be an exciting name to follow.
