Team Select: Game Three Recap

By: Peter Hamot
Assistant Scouting Director, Illinois & Wisconsin

Team Select fell 5-4 in their final game to a strong Team Southeast, but the boys had a strong showing in the finale down in Lakepoint.

Select took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a sharply hit ball off the bat of INF Grant Dinges (Rockwood Summit, MO) who reached on an error, scoring INF Ty White (Plainfield, IN) who led the game off with a sharp single up the middle, making it 1-0 at the time.

They would score again in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead, as UTIL Griffin Robertson (Blue Springs South, MO) would draw a bases-loaded walk.

Select would take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Dinges would reach on a fielder’s choice and later score on a single from INF Grady Forsberg (Malvern Prep, PA).

C Chase Owens (Farmington, MO) would also plate a run with an RBI single, but the final run would come across in the bottom of the sixth inning, making it 5-4 - as INF Karson Wiskur (Smith-Cotton, MO) would reach on a single (99 mph EV), later scoring on a sac fly from White

RHP Jimmy O’Connor (Nazareth, IL) got the start for Select and was extremely impressive over his two frames, not allowing a single run while scattering two hits with no walks and three strikeouts. He’s a long-levered 6-foot-5, holding all sorts of room for added strength in his frame. He creates elite extension on his fastball with up to 7.5’, sitting around 86-89 mph and topping at 90 mph. He showed a knuckle curve with gradual 11/5 shape in the upper-70s to change the pace, along with a changeup he killed spin on, 73-74 mph (1400 rpm).

LHP Mason Trayser (Oswego East, IL) was next on the bump, and he gave a highly intriguing look as a projectable, clean-moving 6-foot-6 southpaw. The fastball worked in the 84-86 mph range with life through the zone, pairing with a 1/7 curveball at 70-72 mph and a low-spin changeup at 74-75 mph (1200 rpm).

RHP Kamden Johnston (Lincoln-Way East, IL) settled in nicely after a long first inning, punching out the side in his second inning of work to finish with four strikeouts. He’s a clean mover with a minimal effort delivery, working in the 84-87 mph range with the fastball, topping at 88 mph and pairing with a 10/4 slider in the low-70s that he could land around the zone (2500+ rpm).

The final arm was RHP Keegan Crabtree (Lincoln-Way East, IL), and he made quick work of opposing hitters over his two innings - allowing just one hit with no runs or walks, striking out one. He’s an athletic and bouncy mover on the mound with a clean arm, showing a fastball up to 90 mph while cruising in the upper-80s. He showed a knack to spin his slider in the low-70s with over 2,400 rpm, landing it around the zone - while also showing confidence in a splitter with around 800 rpm, 74-78 mph.
