Chicagoland Summer ID: Takeaways

On Tuesday, June 9th, our staff hosted the Chicagoland Summer ID at Triton College in River Grove, IL. This event was host to around 50 players from around the state, and gave our staff an up-close and personal look at some of the area’s best players.
Today, we are taking the time to highlight some of the day’s standouts, found in this takeaways piece, below.

Position Players
Beckham Francis, OF, Oswego, 2028
6-foot-2, 169-pounds, high waisted and projectable build. The right-handed hitter delivered one of the loudest rounds of BP on the day with a peak EV of 101 mph, averaging 93 mph throughout his round with an event-best 397’ max distance. It’s a loose and flat swing that stays on-plane, creating bat-speed with easy juice off the barrel, staying middle/pull-side throughout his round. Clean defensive round in the outfield with aggressive feet and confident hands, clean arm with a quick over the top release, T86 mph.

Jack Kaplan, C, Loyola, 2027
5-foot-10, 178-pound frame, well put together with some present strength. One of the top showings both with the bat and with the glove on the day. Right-handed hitter, delivered a heavy barrel throughout his impressive round of BP, creating notable bat-speed in a flat path, showed a middle and pull-side approach with line-drives. Peaked at 100 mph for his EV with a 94 mph average. Strong defender behind the dish, clean transfers with a strong arm, worked in the 1.86-2.00 range for his pop-times, T78 mph.

Ethan Acosta, INF, Taft, 2028
5-foot-9, 192-pounds. Right-handed hitter, displayed a loose and uphill path throughout his round with a knack for the barrel to the middle/opposite field, comfortable seeing it deep and driving it the other way, created notable length through the zone, 91 mph peak EV. Steady defender with sufficient arm strength, ¾ slot that played with accuracy, 77 mph.
Cruz Cook, INF, Harlem, 2029
Currently ranked No. 27 in the state. 5-foot-10, 150-pounds, athletic and trim build, room to fill out. Left-handed hitter, loose hands with an uphill path, worked on the barrel with a line-drive oriented approach, easy and balanced with a confident look in the box, 90 mph peak EV. Natural defender with a two-handed gather that works out in front of his body, fields cleanly on the move with crisp transfers. Quick release from a ¾ slot, 78 mph. 6.95 runner.

Josh Berke, C/INF, Vernon Hills, 2029
6-foot-1, 174-pounds, projectable with some present strength, proportionate. Right-handed hitter, loose and uphill path with length through the zone, created mostly line-drives with some feel to use the whole field, mostly middle/pull-side, 90 mph peak EV. Steady glove behind the plate and on the infield, primarily behind the plate; clean transfers while working in-line, 2.09 pop-time.
Jaylen Camacho, INF, Crystal Lake Central, 2028
5-foot-11, 176-pound frame, high-waisted and athletic build. Right-handed hitter, strong hands with a flat path, creates length through the zone, line-drive intent while working up the middle and the other way, 93 mph peak EV, 90 mph average EV. On the infield, steady defender that can make plays on the move, clean two-handed funnel into the body, natural look and feel for the position. Clean arm action, T81 mph, some life across the diamond.
Rory Dore (Loyola Academy, 2031), Logan Dunlop (Oak Park-River Forest, 2028) and Jack Agran (Deerfield, 2027) are a handful of prospects that showed well on the day and deserve a mention.
Two-ways
Landon Hahn, RHP/OF, North Boone, 2029
6-foot-3, 195-pounds, athletic with a high waist, rounded shoulders with room to add strength. One of the best two-way showings on the day, starting on the mound where he worked his fastball up to 86 mph, sitting in the 83-85 mph range. Showed a curveball with sweeping shape in the 67-69 mph range along with a slider with more bullet shape at 73-77 mph. Also showed a straight changeup in the 73-77 mph range. Athletic and controlled delivery, jumps likely with the movement patterns paired with the arm action. Clean, strong right-handed swing at the plate with a peak EV of 97 mph, used the whole field in his round. Strong arm from the outfield with steady actions, T88 mph.

Dylan Molina, INF/RHP, St. Viator, 2029
6-foot-3, 184-pounds, lean and high-waisted, highly projectable. Clean, flat right-handed swing with length through the zone, balanced with easy effort, projects with added strength, 90 mph peak EV. Smooth defender on the dirt with a confident glove, natural look and easy transfers, arm plays loose and from multiple angles. On the mound, the right-hander was up to 79 mph with the fastball with T17.7 IVB and T7.1 HM. Spun his curveball over 2,300 at 63-66 mph and also flashed a running changeup at 71-72 mph.
Pitchers
Jimmy Hellrung, RHP, Lincoln-Way East, 2028
6-foot-2, 170-pounds, some present strength in the lower-half, high-waisted with long-levers. Fastball worked up to 88 mph, sitting 85-87 mph with over 2,400 rpm at times (T16.1 IVB; T10.9 HM). Feel for the curveball in the 70-73 mph range, spun it over 2,460 rpm at an 80% clip in the zone. Utilized a fading changeup at 71-73 mph to round out his arsenal. Simple delivery that works in-line, longer arm-action with a high ¾ release.

Daniel Wells, RHP, Glenbard East, 2028
6-foot-1, 150-pounds, lean and wiry with room to add strength. Clean, athletic mover, controlled leg-lift with a coil and load into his back hip, uncoils down the mound while working in-line, front foot lands square. Loose and whippy arm action, longer path, ¾ slot. Fastball played in the low-80s, T82 mph with natural run arm-side. Curveball showed sweeping shape in the 66-67 mph range. Flashed a tight slider at 66-68 mph and a changeup at 71-73 mph that he killed spin on.
Ben Tulley, RHP, Marmion Academy, 2028
6-foot-6, 233-pound frame, proportionate with hulking strength throughout. Easy delivery that works in-line from a medium leg-lift, closed landing foot, shoulders work downhill and pair with a shorter arm action, lower ¾ release with a loose arm. Fastball played 81-83 mph, topping at 84 mph with arm-side run. Curveball showed sweeping shape in the 68-71 mph range, paired with slight running changeup at 71-74 mph.
LHP Carlos Gonzalez (Taft, 2027), RHP Collin Kjarsgaard (Oak Park-River Forest, 2027), LHP Dylan Doogs (Oswego, 2027) and LHP Drew Carrison (Buffalo Grove, 2027) are some more arms from the day that deserve a mention after impressive showings.
