Eastern PA Summer Open Games: Quick Hits

On July 8th, our staff hosted the Eastern PA Summer Open Games at Millersville University in Millersville, PA. Over 20 players made it out to this event, providing us with updated looks and a new list of players to follow in Pennsylvania.

We begin our post-event content today with our quick hits from the event, highlighting some of the notable players from the day and their numbers.

Position Players  

+ SS Nate Cherry (Pikesville High, 2027) was a top infield performer from the Eastern PA Summer Open Games. The 6-foot, 163-pound shortstop led the event in infield velo, with 82 mph across the diamond while also running a 7.37 60-yard dash. Cherry impressed at the plate, topping a max exit velocity of 97.4 mph with a 93.5 mph average. A true line drive hitter, Cherry displayed his ability to go up the middle with strong pull side ability that produced a 90% hard hit rate, another top stat from the event. 

 

+ OF Mason Eagland (Plymouth-Whitemarsh, 2027) dominated the event, proving to be a true riser and one to watch in the Keystone State. The 5-foot-11, 192-pound outfielder ran a smooth 6.97 60-yard dash, tying for the event’s highest mark. In the outfield, Eagland had far and away the best arm, popping an 82 mph throw. Where the uncommitted outfielder shined, was at the plate. His BP round foreshadowed his outstanding performance in the game with a max exit velocity of 102.1 mph, the second highest mark from the event. With an 81% hard hit rate, Eagland launched the farthest ball of the day with a max distance of 380 feet. Eagland demonstrated a quick bat that efficiently worked through the zone. During gameplay, the outfielder went an impressive 4-4 spraying line drives to all parts of the field. His opposite field and two-strike approach were especially impressive. Three of his four hits went the other way or up the middle. The unranked and uncommitted outfielder will definitely be on the radar this upcoming season.

 


+ 1B Noah Hummel (Holy Redeemer, 2027) had a great day in the box, posting loud numbers with several barrels. The 6-foot-3, 240 pound first basemen led the event with a 102.3 mph max exit velocity. With his frame, Hummel has true line drive power to the pullside, along with the ability to line balls the other way. He demonstrated his line drive ability during the gameplay, blistering two base hits to the opposite field and past second base. 

Pitchers

+ RHP Alan Evans (Schuylkill Haven, 2027) led the Eastern PA Summer Open Games with an 85.1 mph fastball on the bump. The 5-foot-8, 144-pound right handed pitcher displayed a four-pitch mix throughout the zone during his outing. Evans’ fastball ranged from 82-85 mph with a max spin rate of 1953 rpm and 21.3 max IVB. His offspeed played to weak contact, sporting a 74-76 mph curveball and slider, and a 78-79 mph changeup. The changeup, with 15.6 inches of HM, impressed during gameplay dropping off the table and getting hitters out in front with some whiffs. Evans’ sequencing was also strong, working north to south with a high heater and then dropping in a curveball. In another at bat he paired a fastball in to a lefty, jamming them, and then snapped a backfoot slider to get a swing and miss. With a competitive outing, Evans will be one to watch in the upcoming Spring.

     

    + RHP Nikhil McCormick (The Shipley School, 2027) had a clean outing at Millersville. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound right handed pitcher flashed a lively fastball that topped at 85.0 mph with 19.5” of HM consistently. McCormick’s fastball ranged from 81-85 mph, while his slider was 71-73 mph and his changeup was 71-72 mph. His slider had a max spin rate of 2221 rpm, averaging 2010 rpm. He demonstrated his ability to snap his slider away to right handed hitters during his outing. McCormick’s tunneling of his fastball and changeup away from righties was also impressive. He was able to locate his fastball up and away before dropping in a changeup to get a swing and miss. His slider also paired well with his fastball with his command to the outside part of the plate as his calling card. 

      RHP Andrew Zajac (State College Area, 2029) impressed with one of the best performances of the day. The 6-foot-3, 191-pound right handed pitcher used his three-pitch mix exceptionally well, producing great spin rates. His fastball ranged from 80-83 mph with the curveball coming in at 69-71 mph and the changeup 70-72 mph. The fastball’s max spin rate was the highest from the event at 2108 rpm and an average rpm of 2034. Zajac’s curveball was just as impressive, leading the event again with a max spin rate of 2530 rpm and an average of 2353 rpm. The curve also had -15.8 IVB and -17.7 inches of HM. Unsurprisingly, his changeup also led the event with a spin rate of 1909 rpm that featured 14.4 inches of IVB and 15.8 inches of HM. Zajac’s three-pitch mix dominated hitters, giving up no hits and collecting a dozen whiffs in his outing. The changeup dropped off the table while the curveball snapped hard against righties, causing some to turn away from strikes. With an above average feel for all his pitches, the young right hander will be a high follow arm throughout his high school career.
