Tournament Takeaways: NJ Summer Championships

Matthew Laurentino

The NJ Summer Championships brought some of the top talent in the region to Montclair, NJ, with players from the 2026-2031 classes competing over three days of game action.

Numerous players elevated their stock throughout the weekend, showcasing high-end tools, impressive athleticism, and impactful in-game production. Below, we take a closer look at the top performers from the Northeast Invite and the players who made the biggest impressions throughout the event.

Harry Bonhomme C / RHP / Suffern, NY / 2029

Harry lands firmly on the radar after a big weekend both on the mound and at the plate. On the mound, Harry is a fluid mover with deliberate and repeatbale mechanics. His arm action is long and loose which generated advanced velocity off the mound. His FB sat 82–84 MPH, topping out at 85, and was complemented by a CB at 62–64 MPH with 11/5 shape, as well as a CH at 71–73 MPH that featured quality arm-side run.

At the plate, Harry was a run producer in the middle of the order. Harry sets up with a narrow stance and high hands that drop to stays short and on plane to the ball producing loud contact in key situations.

Bryce Bradley RHP / Seton Hall Prep, NJ / 2027

Bryce rose to the moment in both the 17U semi-final and championship games picking up a save and a win en route to the title.

Patrick Connell SS / NJ / 2028

Patrick displayed his ability to hit with RISP at the top of the order driving in 6 runs across 5 games spraying the ball to all fields. The 6'1" - 180 lb SS has a quiet and balanced setup with rhythmic hands. During his load, he effectively times pitchers up with a short leg kick and then at impact keeps the barrel on plane with a level swing path through the zone that sprays the ball to all fields.

Vincent DeCock SS / 2B / Regis, NY / 2028

Vincent showed off impressive bat to ball skills all weekend. Vincent has quiet setup with his weight staying back and low hands. During load, he has a long stride which opens up the back hip to fire in sync with his firm hands generating loud contact off the bat from gap to gap. Vincent's advanced feel for the barrel and repeatable swing mechanics consistently produced hard contact throughout the weekend, making him one of the more polished hitters in attendance.

William Frey LHP / 1B / Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, NJ / 2029

This 5'10", 175-pound southpaw continues to make significant strides on both sides of the ball. On the mound, his FB was up to 81 MPH, continuing a positive trend after topping out at 77 MPH just a year ago. Mechanically, he features a compact, quick arm in the backswing that hides the ball well into his 3/4 release point. At the plate, William hit a no-doubt HR over the RCF fence showing off his present pullside power. With continued velocity gains on the mound and increasing impact power at the plate, he is quickly developing into an intriguing two-way prospect.

Chris Haines RHP / Don Bosco Preparatory High School, NJ / 2030

This 6'1" - 200 lb young flamethrower was one of the biggest stories during the 16u playoffs. Chris has a quick and compact arm in the backswing into a 3/4 release. His lower half works in sync grabbing extension downhill.

Sean Hinspeter C / Our Lady of Lourdes, NY / 2027

This uncommitted 2027 catcher had a loud weekend. At the plate, Sean begins with a quiet, upright setup. During his load, he utilizes a long, controlled stride that allows his back hip to fire, creating advanced bat speed. His slightly uphill swing path along with a barrel that stays on plane producing consistent, hard contact leading to an undefeated pool play run.

Nick Saco RHP / 1B / Parsippany High School, NJ / 2028

The 6'3 - 190 lb long and wiry righty flashed advanced tools on both sides of the ball this weekend. On the mound, he is a deliberate mover with a compact and clean arm with room for more extension. Saco pitched a complete game during pool play tallying 13 Ks along the way! The FB sat 82-85, topping 86 and at its best generates firm arm side run into right handed hitters. The CB had multiple variations varying from speed wise between 65-71 generating late sharp 11/5 movement at its best.

At the plate, Saco used his long frame to deliver impact off the bat. Nick starts his setup extremely narrow and utilizes a long stride during his load maximizing his strong lower half to deliver some pull side power here.

Nick Smale 3B / DE / 2030

The projectable 5'10", 135-pound wiry prospect showed advanced power to all fields despite his lean frame. At the plate, Nick starts with a wide, balanced setup and firm, high hands. He stays grounded into his load before utilizing a controlled leg lift, allowing his lower half to work efficiently. His strong hands accelerate the barrel through the zone, creating a quick, whippy swing that produces hard contact through impact.
