As the summer comes to a close, we’re kicking off another round of rankings updates with the state’s 2028 class. After a busy summer filled with live looks across Virginia/DC, this update brings plenty of movement throughout the board while also expanding the rankings to the Top 175.

The summer offered another valuable checkpoint for this group, giving our staff extended looks at how players continue to develop physically while translating their tools into game performance against quality competition. With the fall now approaching, this update reflects the progress, upside, and overall depth we’ve seen from the class over the past several months.

Today we take a look at 5 New Faces that have made their way inside of the Top 175 of the VA/DC Class of 2028.

 

CLASS OF 2028: NEW FACES

Jake Coblentz LHP / OF / St Johns College High School, DC / 2028 Long and thin frame, low slot with some funk to the arm action, and offers a different look on the mound. Low 80's arm that works the fastball mostly to the arm side. Heavy dose of those fastballs early in counts and will go to the secondary when ahead. Certainly room to add strength to the frame and has ceiling left.

Rocco Fischi SS / OF / PDG Academy, VA / 2028 Narrow 6-foot-3 frame with longer limbs and room to fill. Well above average runner that has the footspeed to stay up the middle of the field. Arm action and overall actions in the infield probably more suited for 3B/LF/CF, but has the athleticism and versatility to move around. Simple and direct movements in the box with a level path through the zone.

Sawyer Ray RHP / OF / Charles J. Colgan Sr. High, VA / 2028 Ray had some big outings this summer in front of Prep Baseball staff, in VA and GA. Long and thin frame, full arm action, and works from a higher slot. Higher release on the mound and uses it to his advantage with a bigger breaking ball that has shown multi-plane depth. The mid to upper 80's fastball is more carry and ride, averaging 17+" IVB and has also landed is consistently in the zone. Will be interesting to see how he progresses and if he can carve out a big role on the Colgan staff next season.

Joseph Rose OF / 1B / Miller School of Albemarle, VA / 2028 Compact frame with lean strength and some sneaky pop from line to line. Minimal moving parts to the swing, with little to no lift and stride. Deeper position with the hands and gets into an arm bar, but has shown the ability to get back inside of the ball. Slightly above average runner that is probably more suited for left/center long term.

Christopher Daniel Suárez Da Silva C / OF / riverside high school VA, VA / 2028 Arguably the most intriguing add for this 2028 class. Unknown to our staff entering the spring, Suarez Da Silva made a name for himself when John Nolan (NOVA coordinator) went to see Riverside in the spring. Athletic with functional strength and just looks "different" in some of the movements on the field. Rhythm in the hands and operation, impact from middle to pull and well above average arm strength in the outfield. More suited for corner outfield as of now, with an average run tool, but has the arm strength and offensive upside to hold up value at those positions.
