ESP Scout Day: Takeaways

On Tuesday, June 9th, the Prep Baseball Illinois staff hosted the ESP Scout Day at Aurora University in Aurora, IL. 15+ players participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball Illinois staff.

We have already released a statistical and data analysis story, highlighting the top statistical performers from the event.

Today, we will be providing our scouting takeaways on some of the event's top performers.


POSITION PLAYERS

OF Tyler Scott (Waubonsie Valley, 2028) put together one one of the best showings at the event. Scott is an athletic outfielder that ran the fifth best 60-time of the event at 7.31. In his round of BP, the RHH worked under the ball with a gap-to-gap approach. Peaked at 91.5 mph EV with an average of 82.9 mph and the highest max distance of the event at 346’. Defensively, recorded the highest OF velocity at 84 mph with clean actions. Scott showed off the ability to work behind the ball and attack with authority. Athletic mover with quick feet. Scott will continue to add strength and became a name to follow coming out of the event.

C Austin Castro (Oswego East, 2029) looked to be one of the top young prospects to come out of the event. The RHH is a physical 5-foot-11, 190-pounds and put together a quality round of BP. Castro peaked at 87.6 mph EV with an average of 77 mph and a max distance of 339’. Flashed some bat speed with an average of 66 mph, peaking at 78 mph. Behind the plate, showed a 70 mph arm with a pop time range of 2.25-2.41. A young backstop to follow in the 2029 class.

SS Olin Bullock (Naperville Central, 2028) impressed throughout the event, the athletic infielder got the event started running a 7.48 60-yard time. In his round of BP, the RHH peaked at 88 mph EV with an average of 83.5 mph (2nd best of the event) and a max distance of 333’. On the defensive side of the ball, Bullock had the top INF velocity at 83 mph, displaying sure hands with range to both sides. Bullock looked to be one of the top prospects at the event with some juice to the pullside at the plate, will continue to add strength and the tools will continue to tick up. A name to follow.

TWO-WAYS

RHP AJ MacMillan (Yorkville, 2028) showcased a quality look from both sides of the ball in the event. MacMillan presents a lean, high-waisted 6-foot-3,175-pound frame with additional room to fill out as he continues to develop. At the plate, the LHH had a max EV of 90.7 mph (third best of the event) and an average of 83 mph (best of the event), working on the barrel to the pullside, flashing some pop to the gaps. MacMillan is an athletic two-way, running a 7.16 60-yard time, which was the second best of the event. Defensively ,tossed 82 mph across the diamond which was the third best of the event. On the mound, the right-hander worked from a controlled delivery, utilizing a high leg lift with coil into a cross-fire landing, from a full arm circle and a ¾ release. His fastball showed some life out of the hand at 80-83 mph with a 2,300+ max spin rate. He also displayed a high-spin curveball at 68-71 mph that maintained a (2,400-2,500+ rpm range), and a changeup at 74-76 mph that showed arm-side fade. An all-around impressive showing from the two-way.

PITCHERS

LHP Taylor Martin (Yorkville, 2028) displayed an upside southpaw profile with an intriguing three-pitch arsenal. Martin showcased a lean, athletic 5-foot-10, 185-pound frame with some strength present. The left-hander operated out of a repeatable hybrid delivery with a longer arm swing and a loose ¾ release. His fastball lived in the 80-84 mph range, and paired well with his sinker at 81-82 mph with arm-side sink. He also employed a curveball at 69-72 mph that showed more lateral movement.

LHP Evan Wills (Joliet Catholic, 2027) filled the zone with his three-pitch mix, emerging as an uncommitted southpaw to know. Wills displays a compact, high-waisted 5-foot-10, 180-pound frame with some strength present throughout. The left-hander worked out of a clean, up-tempo delivery with a high leg lift and coil into a cross-fire finish, with full arm circle and a loose ¾ release. His fastball sat 81-84 mph (T84.7 mph) with life and sink out of the hand (22.9” max IVB). He also presented a tight slider at 74-75 mph, and a fading changeup at 73-75 mph.

RHP Reed Millette (Gardner-South Wilmington, 2027) had one of the louder bullpens of the day, filling the zone with a lively three-pitch arsenal. Tall, high-waisted 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame with strength throughout. The right-hander worked primarily from the stretch, coiling into a tall/fall finish with a loose ¾ release. His fastball sat 81-85 mph with sink and played low in the zone. He also showed a big-breaking curveball at 67-70 mph (-20.6 avg HM), and a changeup at 75-77 mph that faded to the arm-side.
