West Suburban Summer ID: Takeaways

On Tuesday, June 30th, the Prep Baseball Illinois staff hosted the West Suburban Summer ID at Lee Pfund Field in Carol Stream, IL. Over 40 players participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball Illinois staff.

Today, we will be providing our scouting takeaways on some of the event's top performers.

Position Players

Michael Wente, INF/OF, York, 2029
6-foot-4, 178-pound frame, some present strength throughout, long-levered with room to add strength in the coming years. Balanced right-handed swing with a controlled load, athletic hands that work to stay inside the baseball, ball jumps off the bat, 101 mph peak EV, averaged 89 mph, consistently worked on top of the baseball. Clean actions both in the infield and the outfield, short and compact arm circle from a high ¾ slot (T80 INF; T81 OF). 7.12 runner in the 60.

Ryan Shroff, C/INF, Wheaton North, 2028
6-foot-2, 189-pounds, round and broad shoulders with lean strength, room to add more in the coming years. Right-handed hitter, narrow base with a toe-tap stride, creates easy bat-speed with loud results off the barrel, consistently was pulling the ball on a line, 98 mph peak EV. Strong defender behind the plate with soft hands and a quick/clean transfer, works in-line from the chute with a clean transition into his throws, arm plays strong with a pop-time as low as 1.86. Clean defender on the infield with a crisp two-handed funnel into the body, steady feet, works through the baseball with quality direction.

Jacob Becker, CIF, Jacobs, 2027
Uncommitted. 5-foot-11, 235-pounds, proportionately strong with a developed lower-half. The right-handed hitter took the loudest round of the day with a peak EV of 102 mph, averaging 93 mph with a peak distance of 371’. Simple and strong swing with a tight turn, present hand-speed (21.3 mph avg.), feel to elevate to the pull-side. Comfortable moving around the bag at first base with steady, fluid footwork.

Vincent Grimm, INF, Oswego East, 2028
5-foot-8, 160-pounds, athletic and trim build. Left-handed hitter, hitterish look with a pre-pitch waggle in the hands, athletic and flat swing with intent through the zone, gets quality swings off consistently, 92 mph peak EV with line-drives, upside swing. On the infield, showed soft hands with fluid feet that plays through the baseball directionally and with timing, shuffles through to his target. Clean arm with a ¾ release, can play on the move.

Danny Soltis, OF, Batavia, 2027
Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 177-pound frame, athletic and lean with a high waist, projectable build. Right-handed hitter, long through the zone with a flat path, works on-plane, balanced swing with feel to work up the middle of the field, 97 mph peak EV, averaged 90 mph. Steady one-handed funnel in the outfield, moves deliberately into a crowhop, high ¾ release with a full arm circle.

Robbie Mueller, INF, Yorkville, 2027
Uncommitted. 6-foot, 164-pound frame, proportionate and lean with room to add strength. Right-handed hitter, wide base with an easy stride, repeats well, knob points to the catcher before moving through with fluid hands, flat path with some hand-speed, 94.6 mph peak EV, 89 mph average. On the infield, soft hands with a deliberate shuffle through the baseball, clean transfers, plays with an ease to his game.

Malcolm Donaldson, OF, Lincoln-Way East, 2028
5-foot-9, 160-pound frame, compact with rounded shoulders and present strength. Right-handed hitter with a clean swing and quick hands, works with a steep path while staying on the barrel with line-drives, 92 mph peak EV. Explosive athlete with a 6.33 in the 60, twitchy in all aspects of his game, speed easily translates to the outfield with rangy actions and a quick first step. Sufficient arm strength from the outfield, T81 mph.

C Andrew Peisker (Sandburg, 2029) and INF Christian Balok (Batavia, 2027) are a couple more names that deserve a mention after strong showings on the day.

INF Kingston Muhammad (Undecided, 2031) was by far the youngest in attendance, but he will be a name to follow in the coming years. The right-handed hitter has a loose and flat swing that was on-time consistently throughout his round with line-drives, making for one of the more fun rounds of the day.

Two-Ways

Delval DeSavieu III, INF/RHP, Homewood-Flossmoor, 2029
5-foot-11, 170-pounds, lean with a projectable frame, plenty of room to add on strength. One of the more impressive rounds of BP on the day, presenting easy bat-speed while staying balanced through impact, showed power to the whole field and the ability to stay through the ball the other way, 90 mph peak EV with a 322’ max distance. Athletic actions and soft hands on the infield, plays through the baseball with proper direction and footwork, sufficient arm across (T80 mph). On the mound, the right-hander worked his fastball up to 80 mph to pair with a curveball and slider mix, showing distinct shapes on each.

Tyler Manning, OF/RHP, Geneva, 2028
6-foot-3, 181-pounds, athletic and high waisted, projectable frame. Right-handed hitter, clean swing with a flat path, line-drive intent up the middle and pull-side, balanced and easy operation that projects into more impact and power, 95 mph peak EV, 89 mph average. In the outfield, showed steady hands and footwork through the baseball, moves well into a crowhop, T84 mph. On the mound, he’s a clean mover with a high leg-lift and tilt back into balance point, leads with his front hip down the mound, stride works in-line with a square landing foot. Shorter compact arm circle, high ¾ slot. Fastball played in the 81-83 mph range, straight action with over 2,400 rpm at its peak. Curveball showed some 11/5 shape at 67-68 mph, while the slider was more horizontal at 69-72 mph - also spinning consistently in the 2,300s. Rounded out his mix with a straight changeup at 73-76 mph, developing feel.

Pitchers

JP Polcyn, RHP, Neuqua Valley, 2028
5-foot-10, 207-pounds. Controlled and deliberate delivery on the mound, full arm circle with a loose ¾ arm action. Fastball played 84-86 mph with arm-side run. Curveball was a quality offering at 70-71 mph, showing spin over 2,400 rpm at times, swing and miss upside. Slider showed big sweeping action with over 17” at times, 71-72 mph. Final offering was a heavy fading changeup at 73-74 mph. 

Matthew Martija, LHP, Geneva, 2027
Uncommitted. 5-foot-11, 181-pounds, durable frame with proportionate strength throughout. Worked exclusively out of the stretch, medium leg-lift into balance point, drop/drive lower-half carries him downhill. Full arm circle, whippy action into a ¾ slot. Fastball played 85-88 mph with clear life and over 2,400 rpm, straight action with slight cut at times. Slider played 72-75 mph with over 2,400 rpm, bullet shape. Killed spin on a changeup at 77-79 mph, slight fading action arm-side, flashed feel around the zone. 

Lucas Brown, RHP, Niles North, 2027
Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 237-pounds. Stretch-only, medium leg-lift into balance point before working into a tall/fall lower-half. Clean and loose ¾ arm action. Heavy fastball with life out of the hand and some arm-side run, sat 86 mph throughout his ‘pen. Showed feel for his curveball at 77-78 mph, 11/5 shape with depth. Featured a splitter with downward action and some feel for the bottom of the zone, 77-79 mph. 

Rylan Johnson, RHP, Wheaton North, 2028
5-foot-11, 184-pounds, strong lower-half with some proportionate strength throughout, high waist. Stretch-only delivery, intentful mover down the mound, medium leg-lift into a drop/drive lower-half. Full arm swing with a loose ¾ release. Showed feel for his entire arsenal, starting with his fastball that sat 82-84 mph; four-seam was mostly straight while the two-seam showed some arm-side run. Curveball played with 12/6 shape and depth with feel for the zone, 68-69 mph. Featured a cutter with some short sweeping action, 72-75 mph. Final offering was a splitter with late downward life and occasional fade, 78-80 mph.
