SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - On last Thursday, July 9th, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the Central Coast Summer ID at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, Cal. This was an open event for all high school classes (2027-2030), and gave our staff an ample look at some of that area's and surrounding areas' top players.
Around 30 players made their way to San Marcos High School and participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball California staff. For a closer look at the showcase details and the technologies we had on-site to assist our in-person evaluation for all in attendance, click here.
To start the day, all position players in attendance were electronically measured for height, weighed in, and recorded grip strength readings. From there, they ran a 60-yard sprint with all split times being gathered using VALD Technologies' laser timing system. Upon completion of the athletic and body testing portion of the day, the players went into offensive evaluations with multiple rounds of batting practice, where Trackman Technologies and Blast Motion swing trackers were in use to gather batted ball and swing data on players in attendance, in addition under going Vizual Edge testing and VALD Jump testing. Which was then followed by defensive evaluations at their primary and secondary position (OF, C, SS, 1B) with arm strength being measured via a Stalker Radar gun and skill evaluations by our staff on hand. Once the batting practice portion of the event was completed, we shifted into the pitching portion of the day with pitchers throwing bullpens from the main mound with Trackman Technologies running to gather pitch data.
Today, we will be looking at some of the top all around performers from the event, found below. For all of the event information, please click here.
NINE TO KNOW FROM THE CENTRAL COAST SUMMER ID
|
Davin Arth C / Foothill Technology, CA / 2027Rankings StateRank: 185 / POS: 26
Arth has been a steady presence on my radar going back to his sophomore season and has continually ticked up with his performance, athleticism, and strength heading into his senior season. Athletic and lean in his build has begun to fill out now at 5'8 and nearly 160 lbs., with still another 15-20 lbs. easily able to fill on him in the coming years. The added strength helped him post multiple personal bests during batting practice, including a max EV just a tick under 100 MPH, while averaging over 94 MPH across his two rounds of BP and drilling multiple home runs, including an impressive 387' blast to the biggest part of the field at San Marcos. His swing has maintained its overall quality with hand speed, torque in the hips, and consistency for being on time with the sweet spot of the bat at contact. On top of his improved impact at contact, the arm strength for Arth has ticked up, now showing pop times below 2.0 with online accuracy to the bag working low out of his hand while showing 77 MPH catcher velocity, both personal bests. With sub 7.0 60 times and strong athletic testing on VALD, the overall athleticism for Arth would easily translate into the OF if that is where his profile suits in the future. An uncommitted 2027 who continues to trend in the right direction, Arth should be a name coaches are keeping close tabs on as the summer rounds out and the fall circuit begins. |

Noah Baker OF / 2B / Chaminade College Preparatory, CA / 2028Baker made his debut to our staff at the Central Coast Summer ID, and the performance of the talented and athletic rising JR. was easily amongst the best of the day. In athletic testing, Baker was tops in several categories, including showing top-of-the-scale speed, posting a 6.53 60-yard time with a burst off the line and the ability to build speed throughout, showing easy long-term CF defensive athleticism. His arm plays well with an 86 MPH present velocity that showed easy carry to both 3B and home plate from RF that can be a solid tool over the long term. The quality of his athletic ability, twitch in the profile and developing strength in his present 6' 155 lbs. frame translated into consistent hard contact during batting practice with a max EV approaching the 100 MPH range while averaging over 90 MPH throughout his round, but can improve the quality of his angles as he matures his approach/timing to put more of that hard contact in the air vs. on the ground. With an opportunity to compete for a full-time role at Chaminade in the coming year and continued development to a strong overall present profile, the name Noah Baker should be one that works its way onto many college recruiting boards in the future. |

Zephyr Blakney RHP / 1B / Thousand Oaks High, CA / 2029Blakney first attended the Rising Stars ID: Ventura County back in 2024, and now, a little over two years later, and focusing full-time on the mound, the rising sophomore out of Thousand Oaks made a strong statement to his present and future abilities for the next level. Checking in with a strengthened and solid frame at 6'1 and 224 lbs., the right-hander looks the part of a prototype long-term pitcher and showed the present stuff and delivery to back up the eye test. The delivery repeated with relative ease and clean movements down the mound into foot strike while showing a loosened and quicker arm path. Blakney displayed an 82-83 MPH FB with intriguing spin traits, averaging 2200 RPMs of spin across his bullpen from a higher arm slot, and with 6' of extension on the offering, it has a strong foundation that can continue to be polished. He backed the FB up with a two-seam sinker that worked in the 81-82 MPH range, showing slightly lower spin with less carry through the zone than his four-seam option to give him different shapes into the zone while maintaining similar release traits on the offering. Finally, his off-speed arsenal at present is in the form of a quality 72-74 MPH SLD with nearly 2200 RPMS of spin on the offering, which showed short horizontal break with some present depth in the shape when executed properly. The overall foundation of where Blakney has developed in the last two years is strong, and he shows plenty of upside to keep tabs on in the coming years. |

Sean Brennan RHP / OF / Notre Dame, CA / 2029Brennan hails from the consistently strong Notre Dame program out of the talented Mission League, and with several upperclassmen departing from the program, the cupboard is stocked with talented next-up players like the two-way Brennan. As a position player, he demonstrated a solid to strong overall present profile with athletic ability ranking near the upper end of players in attendance based on our athletic testing from sprint times to jump testing. Offensively, the swing shows strong present impact into the mid 90's at its peak while averaging just a tick over 90 MPH, with a swing that is flatter through the zone. Brennan produced predominantly line drive to ground ball contact, but with 58% of that being in the hard hit range (90+ MPH). With a present 83 MPH velocity from the outfield that flashed accuracy on throws to both 3B and home plate, there appears to be long-term versatility for him in the defensive profile across all three OF positions. In addition to a strong showing as a position player, the 6' 164 lbs. Brennan threw one of the top bullpens of pitchers in attendance with a present mid 80's FB that averaged just under 2200 RPMs of spin while dropping in a quality upper 70's CHG with the ability to kill spin on the offering and the makings of a potential sound SLD in the low to mid 70's. The delivery for Brennan reflects the quality of his athletic ability, showing clean actions into foot strike with a loose, quick arm that repeats efficiently. |

Zackary Martinez C / OF / Adolfo Camarillo High, CA / 2028Rankings StateRank: 186 / POS: 31
Martinez stood out for me in a pair of late spring live-looks at Camarillo High School, where his obvious strong toolset performed well in varsity-level competition. That ability has quickly translated into a strong start to his summer on the tournament circuit and shone brightly during his appearance at the Central Coast Summer ID. At 6' 173 lbs. Martinez is athletically built with broad shoulders and room to keep adding strength as he matures. There is solid to strong athleticism in the profile, which tested well across the sprint testing and jump metrics gathered. Behind the plate, his arm was one of the top ones in attendance, peaking at 78 MPH with his catcher velocity while living in the 2.0 to low 2.0 range on the majority of his throws, while showing clean receiving actions with feel for handling velocity and spin adeptly from a quality arm during his bullpen session. The impact in his RH swing was readily apparent with a max EV over 100 MPH while averaging just a tick under 95 MPH throughout his BP while flashing loft with carry when he connects out front, drilling a 386' max distance, but there is still polish to consistently reach that peak EV/batted ball angle to access his natural raw power consistently. A rising JR. with real defensive ability behind the plate, intriguing impact at the plate, strong athleticism, and projection in his frame, the name Zackary Martinez will be one college programs are going to want to start tracking for the 2028 class. |

Alex Mathis OF / OF / Oaks Christian, CA / 2029Another first-timer for our staff, the depth of the program at Oaks Christian just keeps getting better with players like Alex Mathis coming onto the upper levels as several key players depart from the 2026 team. Mathis was one of the top athletes in attendance despite being one of the younger players in attendance, posting amongst the best sprint times running a sub 7.0 with burst, while being one of the best testers on the jump mat giving his profile intriguing upside as he fills out his wiry present 5'10 166 lbs. frame to tick up his strength to trend up his whole profile to go with his natural athletic ability. The quality of his offensive ability presents another intriguing tool for Mathis, who blasted a 100+ MPH drive with a 365' max distance while averaging just a tick over 90 MPH of EV across his rounds of BP from a swing that showed easy natural bat speed and fluidity in the movements. Adding an 86 MPH arm velocity from the OF to give him long-term versatility in the defensive profile will make Mathis a strong follow in the coming 2029 class. |

Pietro Rose SS / 2B / Damien, CA / 2028Rose was an anticipated live look for me after seeing plenty of video on him across social media over the past year. To get eyes on the talented rising JR out of the Inland Empire was a welcome sight, and the 6'1 170 lbs. backed up the quality of the video I have seen on him. The frame is wiry, but athletic with the actions and athleticism in the profile across the board to show an overall profile that is not only strong at the present, but possesses intriguing upside as he continues to mature physically and polish his overall game. His athleticism will give him long-term left side of the INF defensive ability with a 7.0 range 60 that has quickness in the first step and upper 80 MPH arm strength to handle the distance of the throws from that side while showing fluidity in his actions with the ability to play downhill with tempo that should make him a solid to strong defender. At the plate, the LH hitting Rose demonstrated strong present impact with an upper 90's max EV while averaging over 90 MPH across his round of BP with consistency of hard contact to flash interesting power potential in the bat. Rose reached over 350' on his max distance for the day, but he can improve the quality of the angles at which he hits the baseball as he continues his development process. A strong foundation of athletic ability, left side of the INF defensive ability, and a LH bat that shows upside will make Rose a player that college programs are going to want to get their eyes on in the future. |

Anakin Tolman RHP / Corona High School, CA / 2027Tolman quickly passed the eye test with an imposing 6'7 frame that checked in at 242 lbs., looking the part of a durable workhorse. Then he toed the rubber to show an interesting overall pitching profile from a four-pitch mix that was highlighted by a lively running FB that lived in the mid 80's on the day and comes from a low release height to provide deception for hitters and then a CB in the upper 60's at present with bite in the break, a mid 60's SLD with sweeperish tendencies and the makings of an intriguing CHG that showed arm side fade when executed effectively and has the potential to be a true weapon against LH hitters as he polishes the offering. Tolman moves down the mound with moderate effort and holds his line into foot strike while flashing a looser, quick arm that repeats a similar release height/extension on each of his offerings to provide increased deception for hitters. With an XL frame, quality delivery, repeatability, solid to strong present stuff, deception, and still upside in the future for the right-hander, Tolman will be an arm that college programs are going to need to check in on for the 2027 class. |

Justin Gomez OF / 3B / Valley View High, CA / 2027Gomez was another player who made a lengthy trip up from the Inland Empire to the Central Coast to showcase his tools, and those tools were loud and impressive amongst a very strong group of talent. Strongly built at 5'11 206 lbs., there is innate athletic ability in his profile to go with his present strength, running a 6.8 60-yard sprint with 20+ MPH of max run speed showing his ability to build speed efficiently over space. His arm strength was the best of the OFs in attendance, with 88 MPH of velocity showing low flight out of the hand, carry, and accuracy on his throws to both 3B and home plate. There is long-term CF athleticism and RF arm strength to comfortably profile him to handle one of those spots via his toolset. Then, for good measure, Gomez adds in impact at the plate from an RH swing, which showed consistent loud hard contact over his rounds of batting practice, approaching nearly 100 MPH of max EV with mid 90s average EV for a 77% hard hit rate during his batting practice. The quality of his angles can be improved to turn his hard contact into real power, but the tool is there, and when combined with his athletic ability, strength, and arm give an intriguing uncommitted 2027 profile to keep tabs on. |
