The 2026 spring season has come to an end across the Old Line State. This week, our staff will highlight the Prep Baseball MD All-State teams, including the Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Underclass Player of the Year, and the Newcomer of the Year. Next up, we highlight a player who had one of the strongest sophomore campaigns that we have seen in some time, leading to the nod for 'Underclass Player of the Year'.

UNDERCLASS PLAYER OF THE YEAR

2028 Cooper DeWaal (Oakdale)

Another tight race in this category, Maryland's 2028 class is certainly creating buzz not only across the Mid-Atlantic, but the country as a whole. Shortstop Cooper DeWaal shined this spring and got out of the gate in a hurry, eventually slashing .500/.578/1.603 on the spring with 41 total hits, 22 extra-base hits, 10 home runs, 34 RBI, 40 runs scored, and 18 stolen bases. The power surge took the state by storm, as the left-handed shortstop was arguably the most feared hitter across the public school ranks this spring.
