2026 OHSAA Tournament: Division VII State Semifinal - #1 Tiffin Calvert vs #7 Delphos St. John's

CANTON - .Delphos St. John's escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth and held off top-ranked Calvert for a 5-3 victory in the Division VII state semifinals on Friday morning.

The seventh-rated Blue Jays scored one run in the first, three in the fifth and one in the sixth to go up 5-0 before the Senecas rallied for a pair in the last of the sixth. However, Cam Elwer enduced a ground out with the bases juiced and then permitted one run in the bottom of the seventh to send DSJ to the state championship game for the first time in school history.

The Blue Jays scored an unearned run in the first without the benefit of a hit,  then tallied three in the fifth sandwiching triples by Jackson Wiechart and Braden Lindeman around an Aidan Swick single.

Base hits from Logan Duncan and Wiechart along with an error mixed in upped the advantage to five in the sixth before Calvert rallied.

Charlie Palm, Connor Moyer and Cameron Moyer all had singles in a two-run sixth for the No. 1 team in Division VII. Logan Ritzler had a leadoff triple in the seventh and came home on a ground out from Vincenzo Lyons, but after an error, an Elwer strikeout and a fly out sent Calvert home with a loss in the state semifinals for the third-straight season.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Elwer, a Furman commit in basketball, went the distance giving up six hits and three walks while fanning six against a team that had scored double digits 19 times this year, outscoring opponents 63-6 in five tournament games.

WHAT'S NEXT?: Success will certainly continue for Calvert after four state appearances in a five-year period. A strong sophomore class along with junior leadoff hitter Lyons brings hope for another shot at winning a championship for head coach Matt Coleman, who is 236-73-1 in his dozen years in charge of the program.
