NorCal Rising Stars ID: Player Analysis

On March 29th, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the NorCal Rising Stars ID at Islanders Fields in Lathrop, Cal. This was an open event for rising stars classes (2030-2031), and gave our staff an ample look at the area’s top prospects.

Today, we will we’re taking a look at all of the prospects from the event in alphabetical order:
PLAYER ANALYSIS
Jakin Bustamante, Folsom (CA), 2030
Positional Profile: OF/3B Solid athlete with strong and long lower body. Quick, simple bat path and approach as a gap to gap hitter. Fundamental fielder with room to grow all around.
Body: 5-7, 138 pounds. Athletic with long legs, strong lower body. Thinner in upper body.
Hit: RHH. Wide base with very good balance. Very soft and quiet lower half and load. Sets up with a light lean back/turn in upper body. Quick bat. Smooth and short stroke. Good torque in upper body, allowing him to turn on pitches well. Balance and bat speed allows him to go to all fields due to the ability to keep bat in zone. Swing profiles well as a gap to gap line drive hitter
Power: 87 mph max exit velocity (73.8 avg.); 243-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. OF - 73 mph. Solid arm action with over the top release and moderate arm whip and speed.
Defense: Very balanced and controlled in the outfield. Comes in on the ball well and gets low to the ground on groundballs.
Colby Casas, Folsom (CA), 2031
Positional Profile: SS/C Very smooth fielder with solid build and moderate swing speed and path.
Body: 5-6, 142 pounds. Solid, filled build that should stick in MIF. Strong upper body. Some room to grow in legs.
Hit: RHH. High hands and wide base. Small load that lands quickly. Very still bat and almost no movement pre pitch. Moderate bat speed. Some lag through the zone but able to keep barrel in it a long time. Swing gets long at times, he can hook the ball. Gets to the outside pitch well.
Power: 81 mph max exit velocity (74 avg.); 278-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 72 mph. Very solid arm action, quick and clean. Gets the ball out quick with fast drawback to 3/4 arm slot.
Defense: Quick feet and very balanced. Has good range and is efficient in getting to groundballs. Very under control and smooth in his motions.
Alec Cuevas, Elk Grove (CA), 2030
Positional Profile: OF/1B Strong body with good power from simple two handed swing and relaxed demeanor.
Body: 6-1, 171 pounds. Super solid build with strong and hefty upper body and good athleticism in legs for good power.
Hit: RHH. Semi-narrow base. Slight hunch but mostly upright. Shoulder high hands. Stays very still until a small-medium leg kick. Short, two handed swing. Moderate bat speed. Some bat whip. Turns on inside pitches well and power comes mostly when he pulls the ball.
Power: 87 mph max exit velocity (77.5 avg.); 274-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. OF - 75 mph. Short arm drawback into high release. Solid arm speed and whip.
Defense: Very relaxed in his posture. Gets around balls well and move well laterally.
Dylan DiBenedetto, Elk Grove (CA), 2030
Positional Profile: C/3B Solid fielder with good length and a quick bat.
Body: 5-11, 159 pounds. Lanky with strong legs.
Hit: RHH. Simple, standard stance. Quietness throughout and really does not have any movement. Very quiet and strong hands. Good bat speed and quickness, keeps barrel in the zone a long time. Good shortness in his swing and stays behind the ball well.
Power: 84 mph max exit velocity (75.2 avg.); 300-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. C - 71 mph. Very quick drawback. Moderate arm whip. High 3/4 release. Consistently keeps throws down.
Defense: 2.12-2.20 pop time range; Pretty efficient. Quick movements and good reactions. Receives ball well.
Iker Guevara, Folsom (CA), 2030
Positional Profile: SS/OF High motor and rangy fielder with a lot of room to improve body
Body: 5-4, 120 pounds. On the slimmer side, with long legs. Has a ton of room to fill out with more muscle and build a powerful frame.
Hit: SH. Small step as his load. Starts with a wide, crouched base. Hands are shoulder high and very closer to his body in his setup, which wraps his bat around his should a little bit. Slower bat speed, not a ton of whip. Does a nice job of getting to high pitches, showing strong hands. Hip rotation is slow, but has potential of unlocking more power. Pulls the ball more when he lifts.
Power: 76 mph max exit velocity (71.4 avg.); 250-foot max batted distance.
Arm: LH. INF - 72 mph. Longer, side arm delivery. Slower arm speed and whip but still puts balls on a line.
Defense: High motor. Really good moving laterally. Quick feet and gets really good positioning.
Gabe Horrocks, Del Oro (CA), 2031
Positional Profile: 1B Strong 1B build with solid hands but is very stiff.
Body: 5-7, 157 pounds. Blocky body, strong lower body, heavy legs. Looks filled out for his age but as he grows will have more room for added muscle.
Hit: LHH. High hands and a slight bat wiggle. Stands pretty straight up and has a medium wide base. Has simple, small step forward as load. Ok bat speed but not a lot of whip. Has a balanced bat path and goes the opposite way well.Very stiff on his swing and follow through, does not use his hip rotation well. Has room to unlock power by unlocking his hips and creating a faster bat.
Power: 78 mph max exit velocity (63.9 avg.); 99-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 65 mph. Long, slow arm action. Deep reachback into high release creates solid throws and accuracy but takes a long time.
Defense: Stiff upper body which makes things harder on him. Takes a lot of unnecessary steps. Otherwise has good hands.
Gavin Middleton, University Preparatory (CA), 2030
Positional Profile: 1B Lanky body with a short, efficient swing from a tall stance. Fastball plays flat but curveball has really nice shape and changeup has interesting fade, all out of a deceptive 3/4 arm action.
Body: 6-2, 160.7 pounds. Very slim body. Lanky legs and thin arms with sturdy top half. Plenty of room to fill out.
Hit: RHH. Tall, upright stance. Hands held slightly above shoulder height in a cocked back position. not a high leg kick on load but still around medium in step. Short, direct swing. Bat path stays in zone a long time. Keeps hands inside well. Doesn't generate a ton of power on anything that isn't inside.
Power: 90 mph max exit velocity (82 avg.); 294-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 69 mph. Loopy arm action that is slow but allows him to get good throws consistently on a line.
Defense: Doesn't do a great job of staying down on ground balls consistently due to his lanky frame, but has soft hands and is able to handle most types of hops.
Positional Profile: RHP Lanky body with a short, efficient swing from a tall stance. Fastball plays flat but curveball has really nice shape and changeup has interesting fade, all out of a deceptive 3/4 arm action.
Delivery: Gets long very easily. Relaxed, upright motion with a high leg kick. Gets good extension with his long legs. Is stiff in his upper body and needs to open up his hip rotation more. Lets back leg linger in air before landing on follow through.
Arm Action: RH. 3/4 release from a fairly deceptive reach back that hides the ball well for a few moments. Solid arm speed but not a lot of whip.
FB: T80, 77-80 mph. Plays pretty flat. some armside run but not much ride to speak of. Able to locate it well anywhere in the zone. Plays a little faster than it is because of the deception. T2162, 2115 average rpm.
CB: 65-66 mph. Has a big sharp break. Really snaps with horizontal movement and some solid depth. Has some solid late action and a tightness moving horizontally. Shows he can get it down and can plant it backdoor to lefties well. T2288, 2229 average rpm.
CH: 70-70 mph. Has some solid fade on it. He can stay out of the middle of the zone with it and does not leave it up too often. Plays worse than the numbers because it will come in slow enough for hitters to pick up on it. T1733, 1621 average rpm.
Benjamin Wallace, Central Catholic (CA), 2030
Positional Profile: OF Strong and athletic body that packs a ton of power into his frame using a very quick bat path. Has two types of fastballs that both have good movement and command as well as a tight curveball and slow changeup.
Body: 5-9, 141.8 pounds. Strong, athletic, filled build with a good upper body.
Hit: RHH. Athletic, balanced stance. medium leg kick. Minimal bat wag with shoulder high hands. Very quick bat. Gets great hip rotation that allows for a short and fast swing. Generates a ton of power for his size due to his bat speed and ability to turn quickly on pitches. Power mostly goes pull side but also puts a lot of barrels up the middle.
Power: 89 mph max exit velocity (81.1 avg.); 332-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. OF - 83 mph. Very strong arm whip with over the top release. Able to put balls on a line using a good loadup and deep reachback.
Defense: Stay under control while fielding. Gets to balls quickly and gets around ground balls efficiently.
Positional Profile: RHP Strong and athletic body that packs a ton of power into his frame using a very quick bat path. Has two types of fastballs that both have good movement and command as well as a tight curveball and slow changeup.
Delivery: Relaxed motion with medium leg kick. Slightly stiff in upper body and needs better hip rotation. Does not get great extension down the mound. Keeps hands at belt a long time before splitting.
Arm Action: RH. Quick arm action, quick with his reach back with good coil and solid arm whip. 3/4 armslot without too much deception.
FB: T78, 76-78 mph. FB has good two seem action running armside. Does a great job of keeping it on the outside corner, allowing the movement to backdoor righties. It does not have any run. SNK has really great armside run that gets located very well around the knees and on the corners. T1916, 1708 average rpm.
CB: 64-66 mph. Has a straight down bite to it. Has some decent depth but not too much horizontal movement. Keeps low in the zone well but will miss too far in the zone at times. T1885, 1794 average rpm.
CH: 67-70 mph. Has good fading action and solid movement. Command is spotty but flashes the ability to locate it well around the knees. Comes in quite slow so it is easy to read. T1085, 1036 average rpm.
