2026 OHSAA Tournament: Division VI State Semifinal - #2 Hiland vs #3 St. Henry

AKRON - Hiland is one win away from becoming the first team in OHSAA history to capture four consecutive state championships after beating St. Henry 7-2 in the Division VI semifinals on Thursday at 7 17 Credit Union Park.

The Hawks scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate and pounding out six hits to go in front 6-2 and added an insurance run in the sixth to advance to the finals for the eighth time this century.

Gerut Monigold led off the frame with a triple and capped it off with a two-run single for the second-rated team in the state. Jonah and Andre Yoder both had RBI doubles and Mike Miller a run-scoring triple in the fourth for Hiland.

A seventh run came two innings later when Geruit Monigold drove in the final run of the game for the Hawks, which have outscored the opposition 59-4 in six tournament victories.

Miller fanned 15 in throwing a complete game for the Hawks, allowing one earned run on seven hits.

The third-ranked Redskins took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a Tate Boeckman single, Drew Langenkamp sac bunt, a Jake Schwieterman RBI double and a Hiland error.

It will be a rematch in the state finals with Hiland meeting Lake Center Christian in Friday's 10 a.m. championship game. The Hawks won last year 5-4 on a Logan Yoder walkoff single.

HOT TAKES

CO-PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Miller struck out every St. Henry batter before the fourth inning had ended and finished with 15, striking out the side in both the fourth and sixth frames while also recording five Ks in the first. The senior left-hander surrendered seven hits against a team that had scored seven or more runs in 21 games this year. But Gerut Monigold can not be overlooked, driving in three runs including two in the decisive fourth inning. The senior right fielder now has seven RBIs in the last two contests.

WHAT'S NEXT?: The one-two punch at the top of the lineup return for St. Henry in the impressive duo of right fielder Boeckman and catcher  Langenkamp. The middle of the defense will be experienced with not only Langenkamp back, but sophomore shortstop Austin Zimmerman and junior second baseman Austin Kunk will also be in the 2027 St. Henry lineup.
