ROSTER PREVIEW

Kensen Johnson SS / OF / Bonita Vista, CA / 2028From 4/6/26: "It wasn’t Johnson’s day at the plate and it really wasn’t Bonita Vista’s day offensively in general, but the glove was the story for him in this one. He took some aggressive hacks and just never found a knock, same story for most of the lineup, but he still found a way to impact the game with his defense, and that’s what stood out. Up the middle, Johnson made multiple plays that don’t get recorded as “flashy” unless you’re watching closely, balls in the 6-hole and shaded up the middle where his athleticism, awareness, and first step made the difference. The lateral quickness showed, he got good jumps, and he played with urgency. The arm is a real tool, it’s live, and comes out like a bullet with a quick release, letting him beat runners at first even when the play is moving fast. The biggest takeaway is the defensive progress. Coming into the year, the shortstop actions and lower-half polish were more of a question, the operation could get upper-half heavy, but in this look he flashed more confidence and athletic ability at the position. If the lower half continues to smooth out with reps, the arm talent and instincts give him a high ceiling up the middle, and this game was a good reminder that he can affect outcomes even when the bat is quiet." |

Zion Avina SS / 2B / Orange Lutheran, CA / 2028From 1/3/26: "Zion Avina is a name that will only continue to rise as his high school career progresses. Starting up the middle at Orange Lutheran as a freshman in 2025 is no small task, and Avina looks poised to take a significant step forward heading into his sophomore season if this event was any indication. Offensively, he turned in a standout showing, posting the highest max EV of the entire event at 100 mph while averaging 91.4 mph. He displayed advanced barrel control with a low, line-drive approach and a 75% hard-hit rate. While the BP path appeared a bit steep and direct off the machine, everything loosened up in game action, where his natural fluidity through the zone really showed. Avina smoked a line-drive base hit to left in one at-bat, then capped the day with a pull-side home run to left, a swing that didn’t look max-effort and hinted at just how much power upside is still coming. Defensively, Avina may be even more impressive. He shows true SS instincts, pairing soft, quick hands with the ability to make plays comfortably to both sides. His internal clock and feel for the position stand out at a young age. While the 7.39 60-yard dash isn’t a present separator, there is plenty of physical development still ahead, suggesting his speed will improve naturally as the body matures. Overall, Avina is a high-upside 2028 MIF prospect with impact potential on both sides of the ball, and a trajectory that points sharply upward." |

Romeo Briones LHP / 1B / Helix, CA / 2028From 4/30/26: "At this point, Briones is just making it routine to look like one of the more intriguing sophomores around. The lefty went five innings, punched out seven, and gave up just two hits while once again showing why he keeps popping up every time Helix takes the field. He filled up the zone with a four pitch mix, stayed in control from the jump, and had that same edge on the mound that keeps showing up every look. It feels like every time he gets close to finishing an inning, there is a little extra in the tank. He just has that gear to go get the last out, and that kind of competitiveness stands out right away. The curveball is still the pitch that really grabs you. It has quality shape to it, and he does a nice job using it to both righties and lefties, especially when he starts clipping the zone on that back door look. The slider plays off it well, and the changeup gives hitters another speed to think about even if he does not go to it as much. Then at the plate, he reminded everyone he is not just a pitcher by absolutely crushing a no doubt homer to right. That was real juice, and it matched what the body and swing already suggest. This is now another loud two way look from Briones, and honestly, it is getting hard to say anything new other than he just keeps showing up and producing." |

Tyce Johnson SS / Linfield Christian School, CA / 2028From 2/26/26: "Two swings, two home runs — and that was just the start of a monster day for Johnson. The sophomore reached base four times, finishing with three hits, two long balls, and five RBIs, showing the full offensive package that has quickly made him one of the fastest-rising 2028 names in California. In between the homers, he dropped down a bunt single and got down the line in 3.98 seconds, home-to-first, flashing the speed component that separates him from most power bats his age. Johnson’s combination of power, speed, and advanced hit tool continues to trend upward. After hitting .338 as a freshman, he looks strong and explosive, with tons of confidence heading into 2026. The tools were on full display from start to finish on both sides of the ball. On top of the elite bat speed that helped smash the two home runs, Johnson also turned an impressive double play that killed a Whittier Christian rally in the early going. Johnson’s strong showings at the West Coast Super Sophomore Games in Eugene and the San Diego Preseason All-State carried directly into this first live look of the spring. Johnson is shaping into one of the more complete players in a very deep California sophomore class, and if he’s not already on everyone’s radar nationally, he will be soon. An early candidate to represent Team SoCal at the Prep Baseball Future Games this summer, Johnson continues to stack loud performances and raise his stock." |

Micah Mecucci OF / OF / Mission Hills High, CA / 2028From 4/20/26: "Mecucci had an extremely loud performance going 3-5 with 2 homers, a double, and 4 RBIs. The sophomore has a physical frame at 6 '1, 190lbs and immediately catches your eye. After flying out to CF and popping up to the catcher in his first two at-bats, Mecucci capitalized for the rest of the day. In his 3rd at-bat, he lifted a ball to deep CF that easily cleared the fence. He stayed through a fastball and caught the ball out in front and just backspun the ball over the fence. The ball jumped off his bat. In his next AB he hit a line drive to left-center that cleared the wall by a solid 10 feet. The RHH has quick and clean motions. He has a slight toe-tap, but is direct to the ball and moves extremely well and mature for his age. His swing allows him to stay inside the ball and make contact with the ball when his bat is at top speed. In his 6th game since returning from injury, Mecucci now has 4 home runs and a whopping .560/ 1.150/ 1.710 slash line that should be getting everyone’s attention. Mecucci is a name to watch out for as the season comes to a close. His physical nature, smooth swing, and quick hands make him a player with major upside heading into the summer. " |

Chase Miranda C / 3B / St. Augustine High School, CA / 2028From 3/31/26: "Miranda, an OC Preseason ID standout, showed well in this look with an opposite-field double in his first at-bat, continuing a strong start to his sophomore campaign. He’s currently hitting .345 with a home run and three doubles in 29 at-bats, showing early offensive production with the ability to stay through the baseball and use the whole field. Behind the plate, Miranda displayed solid defensive traits, highlighted by an accurate catch-and-throw ability and a standout moment where he threw out a runner from his knees in the middle innings. His in-game pop times ranged from 2.10-2.20, showing consistency in his actions. The frame is larger and projects toward a strength-based profile, but the next step will be continuing to improve overall quickness — both on the bases and behind the plate — to round out the skill set. With the present tools and offensive production, Miranda is trending in a positive direction early in his sophomore year." |
|
Evan Skelskey C / SS / Corona High School, CA / 2028From 1/11/26: "Skelskey stood out as one of the more athletic catchers in attendance, separating himself with a rare blend of speed, arm strength, and defensive polish. Not many primary catchers move well, but Skelskey is a clear exception, posting a 6.74 60-yard dash, one of the top times on the leaderboard. That athleticism carried over to the offensive side, where he turned in a strong BP round with a 98.3 mph max exit velocity and 362-foot max batted distance. At the plate, he stands tall with a slow, controlled load that creates torque and a rubber-band effect through the zone, and he showcased that approach in game action with an impressive opposite-field base hit. Behind the plate is where Skelskey truly shined. He recorded 1.89-2.06 pop times and led the event with an 83 mph arm velocity, with every throw on line and consistently in the tag zone, making life easy for middle infielders. His actions were clean, athletic, and confident throughout. Expected to see some playing time at catcher this season for Corona, Skelskey’s lanky 6-1, 172-pound frame still has plenty of room to mature, and as the body continues to develop, there’s a strong chance his overall game takes another step forward." |

Jacob Quintero SS / 3B / Ridgeview High, CA / 2028From 4/8/26: "Quintero is another product of the 2025 Bakersfield Summer ID who popped quickly with his fluid defensive actions, present arm strength, intriguing offensive upside, and the type of lengthy, athletic frame you can dream on at the SS position. From there, he excelled at the West Coast Super Sophomore Games in Oregon and brought himself towards the top of our rankings in the 2028 class. Now running down the talented sophomore in the spring high school season, the RH hitter has done nothing to dispel his placement on the rankings board and has only enhanced my confidence in his profile being suited for the D1 level or more in the future. He has added around 10 lbs of strength on his athletic frame, which can hold more as he keeps maturing, but the strength is ticking his foot speed up and improving the use of his lower ½ in the swing as he is beginning to tap into more impact at contact in his sophomore season. As well, the added strength is giving him more time to see the ball before making swing decisions because of the added bat speed and ability to rotate in the turn. Across the entirety of the game, Quintero gave flashes of each way he can impact a team's success on the field, drawing a pair of walks, taking a hit by pitch to reach base three times, and scoring twice (once on a bang-bang play at the plate where his increased foot speed helped push the run across). He took three swings across those three at-bats, making contact each time, fouling two balls back, and stinging a line drive foul down the LF line. He ranged into the OF grass behind second base on a tough high-hopper, calmly gathered it around his chest when it came down, and in a lightning-quick transfer uncorked a throw with carry to 1B. Then, on a towering flyball foul down the LF line, he covered the ground necessary and stayed with the ball on its trajectory downward to snare it and end a Bakersfield Christian threat. The foundation for Quintero is high, but the ceiling for him is immense as he continues to develop his frame, his offensive tools, and in-game instincts at SS. The Bakersfield-based SS is a must-see for college programs in the 2028 class." |
