13u National Championship: Scout Blog

Wyatt Laux, 1B, 2030, Pittsville (IL)
Laux had an enormous showing this week for Canes Midwest National finishing the week with a ridiculous .545/.615/1.000 slash line. Laux has a physical for the age 6 foot, 180 pound makeup. The biggest swing of the weekend came Sunday when he worked himself into a hitters count, and sent a ball 398 feet that left the bat at 101 MPH. To pair with this, he also launched a ball 93 MPH off the bat into the LCF gap for a two bagger Sunday. To start bracket play Tuesday morning, he launched a ball to deep center that would bounce over the wall for a ground rule double for a HUGE weekend at the plate. At the dish, Laux has an athletic setup with a simple load. He has a compact swing with an advanced approach reading spin out of the pitcher's hand. As Laux heads into his first year of high school he will be a fun one to keep an eye on.

Hank Bates, SS/RHP, 2030, Reitz Memorial High School (IN)
Bates had a great showing this week and has been a consistent performer at the plate for Indiana Bulls. Bates hit .444 throughout the tournament with a 1.246 OPS. On Tuesday, he started off bracket play with a bang firing a triple into the LCF and RCF gap tallying 4 RBI’s in the game and propelling his team to victory. Bates has an athletic setup in the box, before rocking his weight back and doing a good job transferring his weight. He has quick hands through the zone and a linear bat path. He also showed an advanced approach walking as many times as he struck out. Bates will be an intriguing name to watch as he continues to grow his game and mature.

Jeremiah Kilgore, SS, 2030, Saltillo (AR)
Kilgore had a monstrous day at the plate Sunday showing off a unique skillset and a high motor. Kilgore’s biggest swing of the day was an absolute missile 109.5 MPH rope that cleared the center field wall before heading 408 feet. Adding onto this, he finished 3-3 with the HR, a hustle double, and a line drive shot up the middle. Kilgore has a tall athletic setup that rocks his weight back before transferring his weight and generating force from the ground. He has a whippy barrel and gets his barrel on plane well. Kilgore also impressed on the bases, hustling all day and trying to use his wheels to catch the defense sleeping as he did twice today. As Kilgore continues to improve his game and fill into the 6-1, 160 pound frame he will be a name to watch.

Drew Burton, OF, 2030, Roncalli (IN)
Burton has been impressive this weekend, with a multi-triple game to start off the tournament for Canes Midwest. In his first at-bat, he barreled a ball into the gap in RCF to drive in 2 runs. Later on, he flicked the ball down the right field line, perfectly placed, for another three-bagger. Burton has an aggressive swing with a large leg kick that generates good power. At the plate, he has a good approach with a really good feel for the opposite field with an inside-out swing path. At 5’10” and 150 lbs, look to see him add weight and, consequentially, power as he grows in high school.

Evan Arnold, C, 2031, Brownsburg West (IN)
Arnold showcased his power this weekend with an explosive swing that does damage. In his first at bat of the tournament, he smashed a ball to the wall for an RBI triple with an exit velo of 85 mph. Arnold has a bit of a longer swing, but everything is very controlled, and his leg kick generates a ton of power. His hands and bat pivot early in the swing, allowing the barrel to come on plane with the ball and stay through the zone for the duration of the hack. A fun hitter to watch in the heart of the Canes Midwest lineup.

Kash Scalf, SS, 2031, Stillwater
The incoming 8th grader looked very impressive this weekend with 3 hits across two bracket play games on Tuesday. A switch hitter, his swing was well-controlled from both sides of the plate. As a lefty, his twitchy load and fast hands contributed to a 2 RBI single and a 3 RBI bases clearing double. As a righty, there is a bit less movement in the stance, and he showcased a great ability to get on plane and stay through the zone for a long time. At 5’5” and 114 lbs, there is so much room to project growth in both height and size. As he ages and his body matures, there will be big returns in the power department, as his hit tool is already great. Coupled with his true switch-hitting ability, Scalf will be a very fun name to watch.

Bentley Davis, SS/RHP, 2031, Dunwoody
Davis lived on the barrel this week slashing a ridiculous .462/.562/1.000. Of the 6 hits on the week, 5 of them went for extra bases, including 1 HR. Davis also tallied 11 RBI and 5 R on the week. The swing is controlled, repeatable, and features a toe-tap load with a longer stride. Davis lands in a strong position and transfers weight well through the lower half. Swing path is slightly upward and generates some lift. Power is already evident with plenty of room to add as more strength is added to the frame. Davis will be an intriguing follow as the frame continues to develop.

Trenton Colquitt, SS/RHP, 2030, Auburn (AL)
Colquitt had a great weekend, batting well over .400. Great approach at the plate batting in 5-6 hole in the lineup. Did a job a lot of the times he was up to bat. One of the things you notice about Colquitt is his athletic frame standing at 6-foot-1, weighing 150 pounds with lots of room to grow. His swing is smooth through the zone, and he shows a great ability to keep his barrel flat through the zone as he swings. His swing is quick, showing his ability to get his barrel around. Shows a gap-to-gap approach when up to bat, can be a pull side hitter or send it oppo. When he is on the bags shows great speed with the ability to steal and get a great jump on the catcher, making it impossible for them to throw him out. Defensively he is as sound as they come, makes the simple plays and makes the fancy ones. Great footwork when he comes downhill to make plays on the ball and shows immense tracking ability at the shortstop position. With the natural athleticism being already gifted Colquitt will continue to grow as his career continues.

John Maxie Reeder, SS/RHP, 2031, Slocomb (AL)
Reeder had a great tournament showing his versatility defensively. Playing two different positions throughout the tournament, and excelling at both of them. His play at catcher was stellar, throwing runners out, not letting baseballs get behind, all around play for the 2031. At SS showed his athleticism as he was able to make the routine plays when the ball was hit to him. At the plate, he showed that there is no need to be fancy, just do your job and that is what he did. Keeps everything simple, stance, hands all the same throughout games. He knows what he is looking for and drives the baseball when he sees his pitch. With his approach to the plate also comes power at the plate. His velos were all over upper 80’s to low 90’s this weekend with his highest being 93. As the summer comes to an end and the fall season comes the 2031 has a chance to become one of the best in his state and all around the country as he continues throughout highschool.

Logan Michelson, OF/RHP, 2030, Lovett (GA)
Michelson was impressive in the bracket play game. He gets into his lower half well and consistently shows the ability to find the barrel. He was ready to hit early in the count and demonstrated the ability to use the entire field with present juice. In his first at-bat, he worked a deep count before driving a ball off the right-field wall for an RBI double. He stays on a level plane through the zone and remains within himself, producing quality at-bats. His approach at the plate allows him to consistently put together competitive at-bats against quality pitching. Expect Michelson to continue improving with experience and become a name to follow.

Cason Pickett, 2030, 3B/RHP, Etowah
Pickett put together an impressive showing at the plate during bracket play. At 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, he has strength throughout the frame with more to be added as he continues to mature. He does a good job using the whole field, staying within himself, and letting the barrel work. He went the other way multiple times, producing exit velocities north of 95 mph. He stays on a level plane through the zone and covers the entire plate well. Shows good barrel control and consistently puts together quality at-bats against tough pitching. Expect the power to continue to tick up, but the feel to hit stands out right now.

JP Manton, 2031, 1B/RHP, Kings Ridge (GA)
Manton lived on the barrel during the bracket play game. At 5-foot-11, 165 pounds, he has a good frame with more weight to be added as he matures. He generates strength from the ground up with a heavy barrel that stays through the zone, attacking pitches early in the count and doing damage to the pull side. He recorded exit velocities of 100.5, 91.7, and 91.5 mph, showcasing his present power. The approach is simple, with the ability to consistently find the barrel and produce loud contact. He stays within himself at the plate and puts together quality at-bats against good pitching. Expect Manton to continue trending upward as he gains more experience.

Jimmy Canada, SS, 2031, St Theodore Guerin (IN)
Canada was a true difference maker on the mound and at the plate today in the quarterfinal against Canes Midwest as he had 2 hits one being a ground rule double and a RBI single. On the mound his fastball sat around 81-83, his changeup sat around 71-72, and his curveball was anywhere from 67-69. Canada has a simple stepping load and quick hands allowing him to get to most pitches and use the whole field. Lookout for Canada in the upcoming years as he will continue to grow and polish off his game making him someone to watch in the near future.

Carson Page, 3B/C, 2030, (GA)
Page has an athletic, well-proportioned build with room to continue adding strength without sacrificing mobility. His swing is simple and repeatable, featuring good balance, quick hands, and an efficient bat path that allows him to consistently get the barrel through the zone. He generates solid lower-half rotation and stays under control throughout the swing, showing the ability to produce hard contact while maintaining good timing. His overall athleticism stands out through his body control, coordination, and fluid movements, suggesting he has the physical tools to continue developing both offensively and defensively. As he matures physically, there is potential for additional power while maintaining his athletic profile.

Dawson Cornell, OF/RHP, 2031, (IN)
2031 OF/RHP Dawson Cornell was a strong two-way look at the 13u Nat, making an impact in multiple spots for Indiana Bulls 13U Black. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitter had a loud tournament offensively with multiple extra-base hits and big run-producing swings throughout multiple games. In one of these moments Cornell drove in the first run of the quarter final game with a double, later crushed a standup RBI triple to right-center. He worked from a toe-tap trigger with quick hands and stayed level through the zone, allowing him to drive the baseball with authority to the gaps. On the mound he was a high impact closer and successfully held the lead to get to the semis while working a 78-81 mph fastball 69-71 mph curveball. He had smooth controlled moves down the mound and showed live, whippy arm action, collecting two strikeouts with a runner on third in the last inning. This two-way prospect is one that will develop tremendously and have a high ceiling.

Leo Calhoon, 2030, OF/RHP, (AR)
At 5 foot 8 inches and 128 pounds Calhoon had high impact at the 13u Nat on both sides of the ball. The Canes Midwest product stayed hot offensively and drove in runs with lots of good swings with a ground-rule double the other way along with other fluid swings as well. He showed the ability to stay on top of the baseball with a level path consistently. The swing had fluid actions with good barrel control and felt to use the whole field. On the mound, he worked 79-82 with the fastball and topped 83. He also mixed a 71-78 changeup and a 69-73 curveball, giving him a solid three-pitch look as he continues to develop.

Stephen McIntosh, 2031, OF, (TN)
We had a loud offensive look at the 13u Nat at a compact 5-foot-8, 150-pound frame with real strength in the barrel. He had multiple hits and continued to put together quality swings throughout the 13u natty and His biggest swing came on an RBI single into right field that left the bat at 106 EV. He worked with rhythm in his load and created torque off the backside before firing his barrel with explosiveness through the zone. His hands were quick and direct, allowing him to stay through the baseball and drive it with authority to the opposite field. He also demonstrated some arm strength in the outfield along with some speed creating range with his feet. McIntosh has the makings of a dangerous 2031 bat.

Callen Minor, MIF, 2030, Talawanda (OH)
Minor had a major day at the plate in a 3-hit night. In his first AB, he doubled into LCF bringing in an RBI. He would go on to hit another XBH, a bases clearing 2B, and a 1B into LF. Minor has an adv. approach at the plate but is not afraid to be aggressive and jump on the first pitch if possible. He has a simple weight transfer in his load with leverage in the path alike. He also has great B2B skills which will only improve over time.

Luke Grant, 1B/LHP, 2031, Olentangy Liberty (OH)
Grant had a loud night at the ballpark with two sharp 1B’s driving in three RBI’s in total. He ripped a breaking ball down the RF line to bring in two and had another hard 1B driving in another RBI. Grant gets full separation before launching the barrel through the zone. While he was a little early on a CB, he stayed back and trusted his hands to work ITZ with a flat path to the ball. There is projection in the 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame with a lot of upside on the way.

Justin Graves, SS, 2031, (KY)
Graves came out swinging in the night slot of the tournament on Monday. In his first AB, he sent a ringing RBI 3B over the RF’er and to the wall at 88.8 EV. To cap off his night, he smashed a 2R 1B UTM after hunting first pitch heater. Not only does Graves have feel for the barrel, but he is also a threat on the bases shown by his stolen base and he is always looking for chances to take the next base getting into scoring position for his teammates. Graves matches planes early in an athletic stance with power coming from the ground. He will be exciting to watch in the coming years.
