PB Mid-South Classic: Scout Blog 📓

2028 RHP Thomas Thornton (TN) was incredibly effective in his outing against a good Canes Southeast team. He finished throwing a complete game shutout allowing just 5 hits, no walks and racking up 12 strikeouts along the way. Thomas used mostly a two pitch arsenal with a fastball that sat between 80-83 that used to attack hitters on the corners and stick in good counts. The breaking ball was the star of the game with late bite that he could manipulate into throwing strikes early and turn into a swing and miss pitch later in counts. Thomas also throws from a lower slot that creates a lot of deception.

2027 MIF Trey Burse (TN) was like lightning in the bottle for the Tigers this weekend as the leadoff hitter and true tone setter, Trey’s skill set is a sought after commodity as he seemed to always be on base and causing havoc. Trey hits from a balanced position and uses the whole field to get hits. He seemed to always have a good plan and ambushed fastballs early and then grinded at bats out late to find a way on base. Defensively, Trey played second base where he made multiple hard plays up the middle look effortless. An uncommitted middle infielder that will continue to get better.

2028 RHP Jackson Hadley (TN) pitched the championship game for the Tigers and went the distance striking out 3 and walking no one. The pitchability was off the charts for Jackson as he lived on both corners with his fastball by hammering guys in and by expanding the strike zone late in the game to his advantage. His slider got better as the game went on and started getting a lot of swing and miss later in the game. Long, projectable frame that will add velo as he grows and gets stronger.

2029 C/OF Hatcher Caldwell (TN) is a guy that has really come on strong as of late, catching the Prep Baseball Tennessee staff’s eye in the state tournament starting at catcher for McCallie as a freshman. In this tournament, Hatcher showed up big at times with a unique skill set for a catcher as a left handed bat with immense athleticism. At the plate, Hatcher stays on his backside well, keeping his approach to the middle of the field. Right now, his patience at the plate fits a top of the order hitter, consistently finding his way on base. Has been riser as of late and should continue to shoot up the rankings.

2029 RHP Jace Scoggins (TN) is a former Junior Future Gamer who has really taken off as far as his velocity goes. Jace sat 85-86 MPH and topped out at 88 MPH. Jace uses his fastball by locating at the top and bottom of the strike zone with pin point control. The breaking ball was impressive as well as it is a bit of a downer with late break and pairs well when he can set it up with the fastball up. Physically, Jace is long with a lot of room for more strength and velocity as he gets stronger. Look for Jace to hit the 90s mark sooner rather than later.

2029 MIF Kaysen Wiggins (MS) was like lightning in a bottle on the baseball field this weekend as the cleanup hitter for a top team in EBC- Russell. At the plate, Kaysen is super aggressive and is always taking control of his ABs with loud contact to the middle of the field. With a little more patience, Kaysen profiles as a perfect top of the order type of hitter long term. Kaysen’s twitchiness will be what catches their eye as his movements on the field are a rare find. In the field, Kaysen played shortstop and looks to have the athleticism to stay in the middle of the field with a strong arm to go with it. Kaysen is the #10 player in the state of Mississippi in the 2029 class.

2029 C Eli McDaniels (MS) was a force in the middle of the lineup for EBC this weekend. At the plate, Eli is a lefty bat that hits from a wide base and looks to elevate and pull the ball. With a large frame standing at 6’1 205 lbs, Eli looks to damage at the plate. While he has the ability to turn on velocity, Eli showed a good ability to hit backside as one AB was a backside double on a breaking pitch where he burnt the left fielder. Defensively, Eli has a strong arm and moves extremely well for his size. With the combination of a lefty power hitter and playing the catcher position, Eli will be a hot commodity in the next couple of years. Eli is the #2 player in the state of Mississippi and #75 player in the country in the 2029 class.

2028 C Davis Trout (MS) put out multiple gutty performances all weekend catching 3 games in one day. Physically, Davis is tall and lanky with much more room to grow and get stronger. Behind the plate, Davis is extremely athletic and moves well with a strong arm. At the plate, Davis finds barrels with a middle of the field approach and stays on plane well. Gritty ball player that scouts will fall in love with his style of play and upside physically.

2028 OF Max Taylor (AR) put on a show this weekend displaying a power profile with good lift and pull side pop. At the plate, Max hits with a bit of a stride but stays inside the baseball well with a short compact finish. Defensively, Max shows off good speed in center field where he covers a lot of ground with great reads. Physically, Max has a mature frame standing at 6’1 180 lbs with more in the tank to grow and get stronger. Max will be one to watch in the coming months as he should be a hot commodity with a rare mix of power and speed.
