Five New Names Invade the Class of 2027 Rankings
The latest update to the North Carolina Class of 2027 Rankings expanded the board to 325 players and brought several new names into the fold following extensive spring coverage by the Prep Baseball scouting staff.
Throughout the high school season, our scouts were on the road evaluating players in game action, allowing us to see how athleticism, tools, instincts, and performance translated against quality competition. While some prospects emerged through standout statistical seasons, others forced their way into the rankings through consistent evaluations and a growing body of evidence that pointed toward long-term upside.
The following players make their debut in the North Carolina Class of 2027 Rankings after strong spring evaluations.
Witt McCammon | SS | Providence HS | 2027
Campbell Commit
Ranked No. 107
McCammon is a known athlete whose spring season provided the scouting staff with the opportunity to gather multiple live looks during Providence's run to the NCHSAA 8A State Championship. A rangy frame with room for continued physical development, McCammon shows athletic actions and lateral quickness that fit well on the left side of the diamond. Defensively, the arm strength and body control project well at shortstop, while his bend and range allow him to make plays in space.
At the plate, the right-handed hitter works with quick hands and solid barrel awareness. The swing shows present rhythm and feel for contact, and as strength continues to develop throughout the frame, there is reason to believe the offensive profile could continue to take steps forward.

Aiden Hamilton | SS | North Stanly HS | 2027
Ranked No. 146
Hamilton emerged as one of the more intriguing middle-infield follows from spring coverage. The athletic shortstop plays with twitch, quickness, and an aggressive style that impacts both sides of the baseball. A quality runner, Hamilton consistently pressured defenses and showed instincts that translated well in game action.
Offensively, the right-handed hitter displayed a mature approach, working through the middle of the field with good timing and barrel accuracy. The swing is direct with present bat speed and feel for the zone. Defensively, Hamilton showed comfort making athletic plays on the move, displaying quick transfers, sound decision-making, and accuracy from multiple platforms. Continued repetition should only enhance an already athletic defensive profile.

Nolan Ellington | RHP | North Stanly HS | 2027
Ranked No. 166
Ellington brings an athletic, lean frame with a quick arm and present stuff that stood out during spring evaluations. Working from a high three-quarter slot, the right-hander creates excellent arm speed and whip through release, allowing the fastball to jump out of the hand at 85-87 mph with occasional arm-side life.
The fastball generated swing-and-miss, particularly when elevated, while his secondary arsenal provides multiple weapons. A breaking ball in the mid-70s shows depth and shape, while the slider flashes hard horizontal action that can run away from barrels late. The changeup rounds out the mix with developing feel and arm-side movement. The combination of athleticism, arm speed, and pitch mix gives Ellington a strong foundation moving forward.

Ashton Fields | SS | East Forsyth HS | 2027
Ranked No. 208
Fields showed a polished offensive approach throughout the spring and enters the rankings as a prospect with both present athleticism and offensive upside. The left-handed hitter works with above-average bat speed and feel for the strike zone, consistently making quality swing decisions and showing the ability to drive baseballs into both gaps.
Defensively, Fields projects comfortably in the middle of the field. The actions are athletic with solid lateral movement and reliable body control. His arm plays with accuracy both on routine plays and while on the move, providing a strong foundation for continued development at shortstop.

Drake Covington | LHP | Piedmont HS | 2027
Ranked No. 241.
Covington is a projectable left-hander whose upside begins with a lean, athletic frame and room for significant physical growth. A two-sport athlete, the Piedmont standout moves well on the mound and repeats a simple, controlled delivery that allows him to consistently attack the strike zone.
The fastball worked at 75-79 mph during spring coverage, showing feel to both sides of the plate and the ability to pitch effectively inside to right-handed hitters. His breaking ball flashed heavy horizontal action with developing feel and was used confidently throughout outings. As strength continues to arrive and the changeup develops into a more consistent third offering, Covington has the ingredients scouts look for in a young left-handed pitching prospect.
As the summer season begins, these five newcomers will have an opportunity to continue building momentum. With college coaches and professional scouts increasing their focus on the Class of 2027, strong performances at major summer events could quickly elevate their standing within one of North Carolina's deepest classes.
