Washington Class of 2027 May Rankings Update

Dylan Grenz
Assistant Scouting Director

As we near the end of high school baseball, Prep Baseball Washington begins our latest series of player rankings updates. Over the coming weeks, we'll unveil our rankings for each of the high school classes, featuring some of the top high school talent Washington has to offer. Today, we'll unveil the update for the junior class, the 2027's.

After a busy high school season, the junior class sees several shakeups throughout the list, with spring performances being the primary evaluating tool since our March edition. This summer serves as a huge marker for the 2027 class, as we tend to see a majority of players secure their college commitment in the coming months heading into their senior year. Several of these 2027's will also be seen at our Summer ID events, PNW State Games, and Senior Future Games events in an effort to showcase their skills to college recruiters.

Below is a breakdown of the junior class, including takeaways from the top, spring standouts, and newcomers to watch. Stay tuned the next two Wednesdays for the rankings updates for the 2028 and 2029 classes.

At the Top

A new player takes the top spot in our latest 2027 rankings update in Sumner's Wyatt Plyler. The dynamic OF/RHP has been nothing short of exceptional on both sides of the baseball this spring. The Wake Forest commit is currently hitting .440 with over a 1.250 OPS, slugging 13 XBH in 25 games played. On the mound, the junior has been just as dominant, throwing 47.2 innings to a 1.61 ERA with 90 strikeouts to 23 walks and a .158 opponents batting average. Plyler has topped out at 92 MPH in live looks this spring, sitting 88-90 MPH with a three pitch mix. The overall fluidity in his game and the two-way upside paired with the athleticism and skill has propelled his stock, with an extremely high ceiling moving forward. This spring has also further solidified a breakout showcase look at PNW Preseason All-State this winter, where Plyler posted exit velocities up to 103.9 MPH, a 6.5 60 time, and throws up to 94 MPH from the outfield. The junior will lead Sumner in their push for a 4A state title beginning with a semifinals matchup this Friday.

Union's Rylan Howe checks in at the number two spot after continuing to show well in-game this spring. The Oregon commit fills the zone like few other top-end arms in the state, throwing all three of his pitches in all counts during a live look against Battle Ground in April. The fastball was also up to 92 MPH on a colder day, sitting more 88-89 for the most part. Howe's long 6'4, 210 pound frame moves well and should only continue to add strength as he moves closer to his collegiate years. Howe's workload took a step forward in his junior high school season, totalling 40 innings with a 1.75 ERA. He struck out 44 batters with just 14 walks allowed, leading Union to a 4A district playoff appearance.

Two players also make their debut in the latest top ten in Bellarmine Prep's Joshua Morales and Sumner's Jake Miller. Morales was one of the big winners in the winter and had a quality in-game look earlier this spring, running his fastball up to 94 MPH. The command continues to make steady strides with a FB/CB combination that overpowered hitters regularly. Morales struck out 10 across 6.2 innings in one of the better outings we saw on the mound all spring. On the whole, he struck out 36 batters across 23 innings of work on the hill. Morales comes in as our top-ranked uncommitted player in the junior class to this point. Meanwhile, Miller comes in at number 10 after an incredible offensive spring. The Washington commit has slashed .419/.527/.730 to this point of the season, adding 9 doubles, 4 home runs and 30 RBI. The hit and power tool have stood against quality arms this spring, with enough twitch and athleticism to stick on the dirt at the next level. Miller, alongside Plyler, will be juniors to watch at the state finals this weekend.

Spring Standouts

We typically see significant leaps as players go into their junior high school seasons, and this was certainly the case for several players in our 2027 rankings list. Decatur INF/RHP Ethan Flavel had a fantastic season, building on a strong winter showcase workout. Offensively, the power tool took a real step forward for the righty this spring, who mashed 6 home runs and 27 RBI while adding 31 runs scored in 23 games. The 6'2 corner type is a legit middle of the order presence who can change a game at any moment. On the mound, Flavel also added 31.2 innings pitched, posting a 1.99 ERA with 49 strikeouts with a fastball up to 89 MPH. Flavel has been a huge key to Decatur's success this spring and rises to the 20th spot in our latest rankings list.

Emerald Ridge's Preston Bolam posted similarly eye-popping numbers at the plate, moving up to #32 in our latest rankings list. Through the end of the regular season, the junior hit .442 with an OBP over .550, hitting 4 home runs, 6 triples and 3 doubles. Bolam also added 19 RBI and 23 runs scored in one of the better leagues in the state. An athletic L/L who can stick in all three outfield positions, Bolam was another junior who built on a breakout look at PNW Preseason All-State, where he posted triple digit exit velocities and a sub-7 60 time. Bolam's superb spring earned him 4A SPSL Offensive Player of the Year.

East of the mountains, West Valley's Drayden Birley looks to have taken a step forward from a physicality/strength perspective, putting together an extremely strong performance in a live look. The multi-sport athlete carries plenty of present strength with a wider-shouldered 6'2, 210 pound frame, carrying plus bat speed through the zone. The combination of feel for the barrel with some present power played with a multi-hit performance live. Birley was a regular in the middle of the order for a West Valley side that finished 22-1 this season. Birley is an uncommitted backstop to circle heading into the summer.

On the pitching side, RHP Ryan Sundby accumilated a great season by the end, earning 1st-Team All-Wesco honors for 4A Glacier Peak. The lean, long righthander worked his fastball up to 86 MPH in a showcase look this winter and carries a ton of upside moving forward. The righty carries a starter's profile with two distinct breaking balls and a CH all flashing well at times to go alongside a fastball with life. Sundby led the way for GP, who made it to the 4A state playoffs with a consistent 2026.

Notable Newcomers

Many 2027's make their debuts in our rankings list after strong spring performances. Peninsula infielder Thomas Marzano had an incredible offensive season and comes in as one of our highest-ranked debutees. The stocky-strong righthander was instrumental in pushing the Seahawks into the 3A state playoffs. Marzano led his team hitting .432, collecting 35 hits in 24 games. He amassed 10 total extra base hits with 30 RBI and 28 runs, walking nearly as much as he struck out. The junior earned 1st Team All-League thanks to his exceptional offensive output. A corner infielder profile moving forward, Marzano is a bat-first junior who should be on recruiter's radars.

Few arms were as hot as Lake Washington's Jack Wilson down the stretch of the season, earning himself a spot in the latest rankings as well. The righty was seen last weekend, where he threw a complete game shutout against a talented Tahoma side. Wilson features a low 80's fastball and a four pitch mix overall. The righty filled the zone, allowing just 3 hits and 0 walks while striking out 6. At the end of the regular season, Wilson had amassed over 30 innings on the mound with a sub-1 ERA, striking out 38 with just 7 walks allowed.

Redmond High School's Leo Ciuca was another standout in KingCo, earning 1st team All-League and earning a spot in our 2027 rankings. A compact-framed middle infielder, Ciuca set the tone at the top of the order for mich of this spring, hitting over .400 with a knack for getting on base. The lefty swing plays to all fields with a shorter, direct path, shown with a 2-hit performance with Prep Baseball in attendance this April.
