Undefeated Montesano hungry for a State Title
May 29, 2026
There can be a narrative that #1 seeds are being hunted, but flip it around for the Montesano Bulldogs. They are doing the hunting according to head coach Mike Osgood.
“We're on the hunt. We're just basically going out there and not worrying about who's trying to knock us off. We're just trying to knock them off and get to our ultimate goal,” Osgood said.
The Bulldogs are currently undefeated and have soundly beat every team they have faced this season. They look to continue that as they enter the semi-finals in the 2026 1A State Baseball Tournament against Seton Catholic.
The experience this team carries goes a long way with every player except one returning from last season. They are brought together to play baseball in a composed manner and right now the entire team is locked in.
“They've just kind of taken it one game at a time and kind of haven't really thought about our overall record, just kind of taking it to the next game. So it's a fun, relaxed group of kids,” Osgood said.
Throughout 1A, the Bulldogs have been in control of their league for the past several years and that's something they take pride in.
“A lot of teams kind of measure their success up against what they can do against us,” Osgood said.
The Bulldogs recently played against Seton Catholic on May 16, beating them 4-0, and look to Friday with their motto of “doing the hunting" as they aim to repeat their success.
The Bulldogs just came off a dominant 10-1 win against Royal in the opening round of the playoffs. Showcasing their offensive potential. Then followed that up with a 3-0 win over Charles Wright Academny to secure the trip to the semi-finals.
The offensive depth has been a strength all season for Montesano.
“Our line is pretty deep,” Osgood said. "At the 1A level, a lot of times once you get past the top of the order, you fall off. So that's kind of been the success for our offense is just being able to not rely on one or two guys. There's just guys that have been coming through different spots, different times all year long.”
On the pitching side of things, juniors LHP Caden Grubb and RHP Kolson Hendrickson have been the main guys taking care of business. On the season, the Bulldogs pitching have given up 32 runs in 26 games.
“I've never seen a pitching staff that kind of just comes in and controls the strike zone like they have. They're a confident group. They know that they have a defense behind them. It's a lot easier to win ball games when your pitchers are throwing strikes, your defense is playing behind you and nobody is sitting back hoping for strikes being called, but just know it's coming,” Osgood said.
The Bulldogs and Osgood are ready for the hunt on Friday, aiming for the State Championship game as the next target.
