Friday

Colquitt Co. @ North Gwinnett (DH)

Score: North Gwinnett sweep, 7-0 & 14-2

Standouts:

Junwoo Jang, OF, 2028, North Gwinnett

Joseph Mittiga, RHP/C, 2026, North Gwinnett

Evan Nguyen, 2B, 2026, North Gwinnett

Chase Enfinger, 1B, 2028, Colquitt County

Austin Neese, 1B, 2027, North Gwinnett

Jaxson Dorminey, RHP/INF, 2028, Colquitt County

Tyson Hobby, OF, 2026, Colquitt County

Key moments:

GM1: The Bulldogs got on the board after a 2 RBI single from Junwoo Jang in the 3rd inning to make it 2-0. They were able to scratch across another run in the 3rd after a Joseph Mittiga single. More runs came across in the 4th after back-to-back RBI doubles from Evan Nguyen and Junwoo Jang to make it a 5-0 lead. A couple of walks pushed across a pair as it was a 7-0 lead now. Joseph Mittiga was electric on the mound as he pitched a complete game shutout to take game one of the series.

GM2: North Gwinnett flipped around to the road team and opened the scoring after an Evan Nguyen double to take an early 1-0 lead. Another run came across in the 3rd inning when Brooks DeRosa led off the inning with a double. The score remained 2-0 up until the 6th inning where the Packers rallied to tack on a pair of runs behind a Tyson Hobby solo homerun and a couple of knocks from Dom McCann, Chase Enfinger, and Bryce Roberts as they tied it at 2-2. The tight contest continued as it was still a 2-2 margin in the 10th inning where the North Gwinnett offense simply exploded for a 12-run inning. Blake Taylor kickstarted the inning with a double followed by an RBI single from Joseph Mittiga, a 2 RBI double from Dane Heil, an RBI single from Brooks DeRosa. Evan Nguyen, Junwoo Jang, and Austin Neese went back-to-back-to-back for a trio of home runs to cap off a 12-run inning and a 14-2 victory.

Avery’s Takeaway: The offense for North Gwinnett really stood out as this was my first look this season. Table setters and power bats litter the order as seemingly 1-9 made an impact in the doubleheader sweep. Sophomore Junwoo Jang put together a stellar showing and will look to return that value next round as he paces the order out of the 2-hole. Joseph Mittiga provides a formidable workhorse and ace atop the staff as he gives the Bulldogs a chance to win against anyone. The pieces are in place for North Gwinnett and a coaching staff that knows what it will take to advance past a loaded Etowah squad. The atmosphere in Suwannee is one of the best in the states and will be rocking in a heavyweight 6A Elite Eight matchup in what is shaping out to be a must see game.

Brookwood @ Buford
Scores

GM 1: Buford 4 Brookwood 0
GM 2:
Buford 1 Brookwood 0
Standouts:
Ryan Johansen, 3B, 2027, Buford

Lio Garcia, SS, 2028, Buford

Vance Bock, C, 2026, Buford

Walker Taulbee, LHP, 2028, Buford

Ryland Perry, RHP, 2026, Buford

Key Moments:
GM 1:
Marshall Jackson and Walker Taulbee went back and forth in the early innings in a pitchers duel. There wasn’t much action until the 4th inning when Javy Ojeda had a walk followed by a single by Payton Walker. Jackson ended up getting a balk called on him to send them to 2nd and 3rd. Buford got the first run across the board on a pass ball and then made it 2-0 on a fielders choice by Carson Reeves. They ended up adding on 2 more runs on a Vance Bock solo home run and Ryan Johansen RBI 1B. Walker Taulbee would go the full 7 innings with 5 strike outs and only 3 hits allowed for the game 1 win.
GM 2: We ended up getting another pitchers duel in game 2 between Joe Soto and Ryland Perry and the seniors went back and forth, tossing up 0’s on the scoreboard. Perry was perfect other than a walk in the 4th innings. The only action until the 7th were singles by Lio Garcia and Ryan Johansen. Senior Caleb Griffin led off the 7th with a single then the Wolves went for the SAC bunt and the ball flew out the first baseman's glove trying to make the play. The bases were loaded for senior Vance Bock and they were able to make it 1-0 on a double play up the middle. Senior Ryland Perry would finish out the game, tossing a no hitter to send them to the elite 8.

Huddy’s Takeaway:
This was a playoff rematch that I saw a couple years ago with an elite berth on the line. It was a full circle moment seeing Joe Soto toss his final high school innings since I first saw him in some of his first varsity innings opening day a couple years back. The Buford line up has been good all season, but the pitchers have had their ups and down, but not last night. Walker Taulbee and Ryland Perry were near perfect for 14 innings. Lio Garcia looked awesome with 3 hits on the night, and just missed a HR in game 1. Ryan Johansen continues to hit and show off one of the best hit tools in the state with 3 hits on the day as well. The Wolves will need more of the same against North Paulding next week as they will hit the road to play at one of the tougher spots in the state.

Glynn Academy @ Gainesville (DH)

Score: Glynn sweep, 4-3 & 11-3

Standouts:

Wessley Roberson, CF/SS, 2026, Glynn Academy

Jacob Sammis, SS/RHP, 2026, Glynn Academy

Keegan Mathis, RHP, 2027, Glynn Academy

Kai Orr, OF/LHP, 2027, Glynn Academy

Daniel Rico, RHP/SS, 2027, Gainesville

Cohen Miller, 3B/1B, 2026, Gainesville

Jackson Donovan, 1B/C, 2026, Glynn Academy

Peyton Osheaski, RHP/1B, 2028, Gainesville

Key Moments:

GM1: This was a competitive series between two talented teams. Game one was a pitcher’s duel, with Daniel Rico getting the ball for Gainesville. Glynn used multiple arms to find matchups they could attack. In the first inning, Jacob Sammis hit a laser up the middle with two outs and came around to score on an RBI double from Jackson Donovan to put Glynn up 1-0. Gainesville responded in the third with back-to-back singles from Peyton Osheaski and Charles Saudarg. Luke Adams worked a deep count and won it with a single to LF to make it 1-1. Adrian Medina followed up with a single to RF to give Gainesville a 2-1 lead. Chase Kiewert did his job with a man on third, sending a ball to shallow RF that was enough to make it 3-1. Rico was in control through five innings, attacking the zone and forcing weak contact. Kai Orr unloaded on one in the top of the sixth to make it a 3-2 game. Glynn kept Gainesville at three heading into the top of the seventh inning. Gainesville got the first batter to pop up to CF, but Gage Freeman and Max Noonan reached on back-to-back errors to put two on with one out. Rico recorded a strikeout to get the second out. Wessley Roberson was Glynn’s last chance and worked a deep count before delivering a triple to LCF. That swing put Glynn ahead 4-3, and they pulled out game one in a thriller.

GM2: Gainesville was the away team in Game 2 and jumped out to an early lead on a single from Dawson Vaughn and a rocket from Cohen Miller to go up 2–0. Roberson kicked things off in Game 3 with a triple and came around to score on a groundout from Kai Orr. Glynn answered back, as Jackson Donovan singled and later scored on a double from Braden Milkwick to give Glynn a 3–2 lead. Keegan Mathis got the start for Glynn and settled in after giving up two runs in the first. Peyton Osheaski started for Gainesville and battled to keep his team in the game. Glynn held a 3–2 lead heading into the 4th before putting together a massive inning. Sammis led things off with a single and came around to score on a double from Jackson Donovan. Braden Milkwick followed with another double to make it 5–2. Conner Ellis found the barrel for an RBI single to push the lead to 7–2. Roscoe Bailey came off the bench to pinch-hit and delivered a rocket to left field, extending the lead to 9–2.

Mathis remained in control the rest of the way, helping Glynn secure an 11–3 win in Game 2.

Takeaways: This series was really close to going three games. Gainesville showed a lot of fight with a younger group and got two gritty starts from a junior and a sophomore. Both arms embraced the moment and competed, giving their team a chance to win. Glynn plays with tons of energy and is led well at the top by Roberson and Sammis. They consistently work deep at-bats and set the tone for a talented lineup. The 5–9 hitters delivered some big swings, creating opportunities for the top of the order to produce. On the mound, Glynn pieced it together using multiple arms and found ways to get outs in a tough environment. They also showed the ability to make plays defensively and pick up their pitchers in key situations. Expect Glynn to keep playing with confidence as they advance to the Elite 8.

Saturday

Thomas County Central @ Villa Rica

Score: Villa Rica win, 9-8

Standouts:

Henry Brookshire, SS/C, 2026, Villa Rica

Joseph Jensen, 1B, 2027, TCC

Tristan Arrowood, SS, 2027, Villa Rica

Hogan Alday, OF, 2027, TCC

Hudson Williams, OF, 2027, TCC

Ben Gardner, C/RHP, 2026, Villa Rica

Dylan Bradd, OF, 2026, Villa Rica

Landon Walsh, OF, 2027, TCC

Colby Holland, 1B, 2026, Villa Rica

Key Moments: The Wildcats were hot out of the gate as they took an early 3-0 lead in the 1st thanks to RBI hits from Tristan Arrowood, Ben Gardner, and Dylan Bradd. 3 more runs would come across in the 2nd for Villa Rica after Henry Brookshire double and Tristan Arrowood sent one over the left field wall for the 2-run homerun followed by a Ben Gardner double and a Colby Holland RBI single. The Jackets cut into the lead after Hudson Williams led off the 3rd inning with a solo homerun followed by a 2 RBI triple from Hogan Alday as it was now a 6-3 ballgame. Henry Brookshire stayed hot and added an RBI double in the bottom half of the 3rd to make it 7-3. The score remained the same until the 6th innings where the Jackets would rally. Landon Walsh got things started with a 2-run homerun followed by a double from Will Griner, an RBI single from Hudson Williams. Joseph Jensen delivered in the clutch as he picked up the go-ahead RBI single as it was now an 8-7 Jackets lead. Henry Brookshire answered in a loud way during the bottom half of the 6th with a go-ahead 2-run homerun to retake the lead. The score remained the same at 9-8 as Villa Rica held on to advance to the Elite Eight.

Avery’s Takeaway: This was potentially the game of the year for myself. It looked like the Wildcats were going to run away with it early but TCC battled and ended up taking the lead. But an unreal performance from Henry Brookshire including a go-ahead 2-run homerun propelled Villa Rica to a GM3 victory as they advanced to the Elite Eight. They will square off with a tough Loganville squad, however they both play the same brand of baseball and Villa Rica has the type of scrapiness 1-9 in the lineup that could push them to victory on any given night.
