PNW Staff

The Oregon Scouting Blog provides insider information and scouting notes from the Prep Baseball Staff during the OSAA season. This running blog will feature information on underclass prospects, unsigned seniors, draft prospects, and anything else that is notable. We will provide a wide range of information, including player evaluations, velocities, pop times, home to first times, and more.

Last week we were able to get eyes on 4 teams in the Power 25 across multiple games. Starting off our recap will be an offensive explosion from West Linn as they visited McMinnville last Thursday.

WEST LINN VS MCMINNVILLE (4.9.26)

WEST LINN

It was a balanced attack from the Lions as they put together 13 total hits plus 8 BB en route to scoring 14 runs. The big chunk of damage was done in the top of the 7th as they put together a 10 spot to breakaway in what was otherwise a tightly contested game.

Leading the charge in this one was ‘26 INF/P Ryan Hemsley (Portland) and his 3-4 effort which included a solo HR, 2 R and a RBI. Hemsley hits with a simple, easy operation at the plate. Stays tall, not a ton of bend or sink in the stance, with a short and quiet forward move. Allows the hands to work easily and has consistently shown a knack for quality contact. Strong blend of a contact approach but obviously with the power to get aggressive and lift to his pull-side.

Additionally, uncommitted juniors OF Sloan Baker and C Gavin Thaut had highly productive games as well. Baker is a more slender, top of the line-up prospect with speed and an all-fields approach. Went 2-5, 2 2B, R, 3 RBI on the day. Thaut was highly productive in this look as well. Going 2-3, 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB. The physical backstop utilizes his strength well through a short, compact swing and an upright stance. Gets added leverage while staying tall against a firm front side at contact. Noticeable strength in the hands/forearms at the point of contact. Puts a short, tight move on the ball in the upper half with easy rotational power. One of the more potent offensive threats in the 2027 class.

Sophomore OF Tyler Holmes was another standout for the Lions. The lean, athletic OF prospect went 1-3, 2B, 2 R. Exciting upside here with his combination of athleticism and present hitability. Uses a rhythmic hand load to sync up with his leg lift prior to initiating swing. Actions come naturally in the box and he showed burst into an easy gait once he got underway on the bases.

Lastly, ‘26 INF Hank Curdy put together a nice multi-hit performance going 2-4, 2B, R, RBI, BB from the 2 hole. The hitter-ish prospect was a standout at the PNW State Games last summer with his quick, compact swing and natural ability to spray contact to all fields. Figures to be a steady and consistent contributor this year and brings a tough left-handed presence to a deep line-up.

On the mound, West Linn gave the ball to uncommitted ‘27 RHP Jack Frishman for 6 innings in this contest and he was quick and efficient throughout. Finished with a final line of 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, ER, 2 BB and 3 K while racking up 60 strikes in 88 total pitches. Working mostly off the FB/SL combination, Frishman can repeatedly get strikes out front to his glove side and understands how to attack the zone and induce weak contact. Uses a shorter arm path into a ¾ release with late hand speed out front. Shorter stride length keeps everything quick and easy with an athletic finish over his front hip.

MCMINNVILLE

For the home squad, it was a tough day of offense as they only generated 6 hits and 2 runs on the day. Uncommitted ‘27 1B Hayes Wrigley added 2 hits and ‘26 3B Agustin Ponce-Lopez added to knocks of his own as they duo combined for over half of the offensive output.

Senior Cam Hyder (Lower Columbia) reached base twice on the day including a firm line drive single up the middle. Hyder had a highly productive junior campaign and was a standout across multiple events last summer including State Games and the West Coast Games.

'26 P/OF Tyler Brummitt added a RBI on a sac fly in this one but there really wasn't much else doing for the Grizz on offense.

TUALATIN VS JESUIT (4.10.26)

TUALATIN

Two Top 10 teams battled it out on Friday with visiting Tualatin heading over to face off against Jesuit. This one was pretty tense through the first 4 innings as neither team was able to score and things were going quickly on each side.

For the visitors, Player of the Year candidate ‘26 Trenton Hertzog (Oregon) was the story in this one. The senior dominated on both sides of the ball in this contest. On the bump, he went 6 dominant innings allowing only 2 hits with 2 BB and 10 strikeouts. Hertzog has an extremely effective FB/CB combination and knows how to command it. FB has above average ride/carry into the zone from a higher release slot but comes out of a tight, short arm path to give added deception. The slot gives him the chance for a true 12/6 breaker the features plenty of bite and depth. His ability to command the FB to all parts of the zone makes it extremely difficult for hitters to cover everything and the CB gives Hertzog a true swing-and-miss offering to rack up the K’s. At the plate, he added a 3-3 day with 3 singles and a RBI.

Nobody else had multiple hits on the day for Tualatin but ‘26 OF Calen Simonelic (Bushnell) produced 2 RBI which was significant on such a low scoring day. The tooled up OF prospect brings a potent bat to the line-up and his speed/power combination really moves the needle for this offense.

Uncommitted ‘27 1B Kye Leenders also had a nice day at the plate going 1-2, RBI, BB. The physical left-handed bat has juice in the barrel and can get to his power easily with a short, direct path to the ball and strong hands at contact. While at the top of the line-up, ‘28 INF Mehki Pressley reached base often with a 1-2 day and 2 BB to go with a run scored. Pressley moves well on the diamond with a leaner, more trim build and overall good feel for the barrel at the dish. Contact type hitter who can set the table for the team.

JESUIT

Tough match-up for Jesuit in this contest as they went up against one of the most consistent and effective arms in the state.

They only produced 3 total hits in the contest with singles from ‘26 SS Jacob Rolling (Gonzaga), ‘27 3B Makoa Kim and ‘26 OF Riley Teed

Rolling has been consistent and productive early on in his senior campaign. The senior has some of the best natural twitch and athleticism of any player in the class and always shows a gritty, blue collar approach on the diamond.

Jesuit gave the ball to ‘28 P/OF Ethan Peng and it was our 2nd look this spring at the talented sophomore. He pitched into the 5th in this one and while his command wasn’t as sharp as we’ve seen in the past, he really limited damage and kept his club in the ball game throughout on this look. Top 10 prospect in the class.
