Wildcats Get In Win Column In Illinois, Ride Strong Pitching For Walk-off Win Over Blackhawks
The Neuqua Valley Wildcats have struggled offensively in 8 of their first 10 games. The pitching, though, has been good enough to keep them competitive. On a sunny yet chilly Saturday morning in south Naperville, the pitching, again, kept the Cats in the game long enough for the offense to do just enough to eek out a win, their first in their home state, but certainly not their last.
Junior RHP Nick Cimino, making the first varsity start of his career, was gritty! In 5 innings, Nick authored 81 pitches and kept the West Aurora Blackhawks bats frigid. He allowed 2 earned runs on just 2 hits, and although he walked 5 (1 intentional) and hit a batter, he found a rhythm that saw him pick up 5 straight strikeouts at one point in the game. He finished with 7 Ks total, leaving the game down just a single run. The bullpen locked the game down as Tyler Nuno (0-3, 3 Ks) once again moved to the mound from 2nd base and provided another quality inning of relief. He faced 4 hitters, allowing only 1 walk while getting two popouts and a ground out. Malachi Sherman (0-1, sac, BB, R), who got the start in left field, came on in the 7th and threw 9 pitches, striking out 2 in the process. The offense created enough turmoil in the bottom of the 7th to give Sherman the first varsity win of his career.
The Wildcats offense didn’t scratch until the 3rd, when catcher Zac Chiz (0-1, BB, ROE) reached on a throwing error by the Blackhawk 2nd baseman, 1 of 4 errors made by West Aurora. Courtesy runner Jack Mackey (2 SB, R) stole second and was plated on a 2-out single by Andy Barkley (1-2, HBP, BB, RBI). The Cats had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 5th after the Blackhawks took the lead in the top half of the inning. A leadoff walk to Chiz was followed by a one-out walk to Sherman. Barkley was hit in the back to load the bases, bringing up the Cats 2 and 3 hitters, Emmit Briner and Christian Lott. Both struck out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Wildcats brought their fans to their feet with a stirring rally. SS Jaleel Glover (1-3, 2 K, R) led the inning off with an infield single after working a full count out of the Blackhawk reliever. Sherman dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and when the Blackhawk reliever bobbled the ball attempting to get the lead runner, Sherman’s speed forced a wild throw to first base. The Blackhawk first baseman was called for defensive obstruction, placing both runners in scoring position. Barkley was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs, bringing Briner back to the plate. Briner (0-3, ROE, K, BB, RBI) grinded out a 6-pitch, RBI walk that tied the game. Lott (1-4, 2 K, RBI) saved his best for last, as he chopped a 1-0 pitch over the drawn in 3rd baseman’s head to set off the Wildcat celebration!!
The Wildcats go into conference play with 3 wins and 7 losses. They will face the Redhawks of Naperville Central to open DVC play. Monday’s home game will be the annual Strikeout Cancer game, so show your support by rocking a pink shirt to match the pink jerseys being worn by the Cats. Christian Lott will make his 2nd start at home, and game time is 4:30. Right before game time, Wildcat Athletic Secretary Mrs. Glenda Stevens will toss out the 1st pitch. Mrs. Stevens is a 33-year cancer survivor and was the original Athletic Secretary before she retired.
