The 14th annual Future Games took place on July 22-27 at LakePoint in Emerson, Georgia. Top uncommitted prospects in the classes of 2026 and 2027 participated in one of the most popular events each year.

For the first time ever, the state of California brought two teams: Team NorCal and Team SoCal.

We caught up with some of the state's standout performers to hear about their highlights on the weekend, their overall experience at LakePoint, and what their recruitment process has looked like since the August 1st deadline.

Stevie Wellens, 2027, SS/2B, Liberty HS

In his sophomore season for Liberty, all of Wellens' tools were on display. At the plate, Wellens recorded a .304 batting average while also scoring 14 runs. In the field, the middle infielder flashed the glove, notching a .920 fielding percentage across 75 total chances. Additionally, Wellens showed off his speed on the basepaths, racking up 11 steals.

Prep Baseball CA: Walk us through your performance at Future Games. How did you feel you did?

Wellens: "I felt really good about it. I was playing my game — stealing bases, scoring runs, and making plays on defense. Overall, I just had a great time competing. Being out at LakePoint on that kind of stage, at such a beautiful complex, made it even better. It was just an awesome experience all around."

Prep Baseball CA: What was your initial reaction to seeing all the college coaches and scouts for the first time?

Wellens: "That was wild. I remember walking into the complex with my dad and getting all the gear, and it just kind of hit me. You look around and see pretty much every school you can think of — it’s surreal. It’s honestly hard to explain unless you experience it yourself. That moment really stands out."

Prep Baseball CA: What stood out about being part of Team NorCal?

Wellens: "It was a blast. I had played with a lot of those guys before, so it felt natural. You’d think there would be a lot of pressure with all the coaches there, but when you’re with your teammates, joking around and competing together, it just becomes fun. That made the whole experience even better."

Prep Baseball CA: What was it like facing that level of competition?

Wellens: "The talent was really high across the board. Every team, every player — it was legit. But that’s what makes it fun. You’re just out there competing and playing baseball at a high level. It was definitely a blessing to be part of it."

Prep Baseball CA: What advice would you give to players attending Future Games this summer?

Wellens: "Play with confidence and stay loose. Soak everything in because it’s a one-of-a-kind event. It goes by fast, and you’ll miss it when it’s over. After my last game, I even kept the game ball just as a memory. It’s something you’ll always look back on, so just enjoy it."

Prep Baseball CA: What was the recruiting process like for you after August 1, and how did Future Games impact that?

Wellens: "It was awesome. I had about 20 coaches reach out, and every single one mentioned seeing me at Future Games. That really showed how real the exposure is. It honestly changed my life. You hear about these events bringing coaches out, but when you experience it firsthand, you realize how big it really is. It made the whole process move quickly for me."

Prep Baseball CA: You committed to the Naval Academy. What made that the right choice for you?

Wellens: "It was an easy decision. Once I visited, I just knew. It’s such a special place. I’ve always played the game for God, and getting the opportunity to play for the Navy and serve my country — it doesn’t get any better than that. It was a no-brainer for me."

Prep Baseball CA: What advice would you give to players going through the recruiting process?

Wellens: "Take your time. It’s exciting, and things can move fast, but don’t rush your decision. Talk it over, think about it, and pray about it. Just be patient and make the best decision for you. It’s your future, so you want to get it right."

So far, in his junior campaign, Wellens is continuing where he left off at LakePoint. In ten games, Wellens is hitting to the tune of a .296 batting average, has swiped four bags, and has 13 putouts and 11 assists on 26 total chances. Wellens is poised to continue a successful baseball career at Liberty HS, the Naval Academy, and beyond.
