The first match-up between these 2 squads was a marathon that went 15 total innings and needed to be extended over multiple days. University came out on top with a 6-5 victory and brought that momentum into the rematch on Tuesday. It was a much shorter contest this time but with similar results at the Titans prevailed 4-1.

UNIVERSITY VS GONZAGA PREP (3.31.26)

UNIVERSITY

Leading the way on the mound was ‘27 RHP Leyton Hurley (Washington). The UW commit was making his return after battling through some sickness at the beginning of the spring. Certainly there were no lingering effects to worry about though as Hurley returned to form immediately and put together a complete game victory.

Out of the gate he showed a steady mix and was using the secondaries early and often. After some initial hard contact in the top of the 1st, Hurley settled into a more FB dominant sequence and then used his Cut/SL combination to finish hitters once he got ahead. GP pieced together 3 hits in the 1st inning to push across their 1 run but only recorded 2 more hits in the remaining 6 innings. Expect to hear more from Hurley throughout the rest of the spring as he continues to ramp up.

Final line 7 IP, 5 H, ER, 2 BB, 0 BB, 4 K

Offensively it was a pretty balanced day from the Titans line-up as they scattered 8 total hits en route to 4 runs. 3 of which game in the final 2 frames.

Leading the way with 2 hits apiece were uncommitted prospects ‘26 SS Marco Longo and ‘27 OF Easton Buie

Longo had one of the more impressive days we’ve seen so far this spring with flush contact in every AB while going 2-4, 2B and 2 R. The physical senior starts tall and relaxed with some looseness in the hands. Gathers with a lower leg lift and ‘knee knock’ load that syncs with his hands. Lands in an athletic base with tension through the core. Quick and sudden barrel into contact with great plate coverage from his swing path. Overall he showed a keen eye as well and did not miss strikes in the zone when he went after them.

Buie had a productive day going 2-2 and helping set up the first run of the game for University with his bunt single in the top of the 4th. The lefty stick does the little things right and showed a willingness to put together team ABs based on the situation.

Additionally, University got RBI from both ‘27 INF Tanner Burger on his late single through the left side and the aforementioned Hurley who produced a sac fly in the 4th to tie the game at 1-1

GONZAGA PREP

The Bullpups jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in this one but couldn’t generate much offense the rest of the way.

Leading off, ‘26 OF Jonah Keller torched a ball into deep RCF for 2B to open up the bottom of the 1st. The physical OF prospect is a multi-sport athlete and JUCO football commit. He brings a great combination of size/power/speed to the diamond and impressed with his bat speed.

After the Keller double, he advanced to 3rd on a single from uncommitted ‘26 C/OF Anthony Karis. He jumped on an early off speed pitch for a hard ground ball through the left-side. He followed that up in his next AB with an absolute missile into LF that hung  up just long enough for a shoestring catch from the LF. Overall Karis has an aggressive but controlled approach at the plate and some of the best pure bat speed and power in the class.

Keller would come around to score on an oppo single from uncommitted ‘26 1B/LHP Jackson Mott. Mott went 2-3 on the day with the only RBI for the home squad. The big left handed stick also ripped a hard single up the middle in his next AB. The size/frame make him a presence in the box and for a bigger athlete with longer levers, he does a nice job staying short and working quick to the ball. Also started on the mound in this contest and spun together 5 quality innings only allowing 1 ER in the process.

‘26 P/OF Dylan Croall (Chandler Gilbert CC) added the only other hit for GP on the day with a late single but would eventually be stranded. Additionally, uncommitted ‘27 Cole Comfort is an INF prospect to keep an eye on. Took a strong pregame at SS. Flashing quality actions with some arm strength. Had a quiet day at the plate in terms of production but overall there’s a quality skillset there and he should be a junior to keep an eye on this spring.
