Each week, our staff updates the Power 25 and provides key talking points from last week's games. This week, we see a plethora of changes, including a new number one and two new faces jump inside the Top 25.

Talking Points

  • MIAA Competitiveness. Year in and year out, the MIAA “A” Conference contains some of the most competition in the state, and nothing seems too different in 2026. Any program in this conference has the ability to beat anybody, and we saw just that last week, as Gilman took a game from previously ranked No. 1, Archbishop Spalding, and Loyola Blakefield was able to steal a game against No. 3, Mount St. Joseph. Look for more of the same as the spring rolls on.
  • Strong opening day across MoCo. Public schools in Maryland always contain strong headlines throughout the spring, and the top-end talent across Montgomery County is usually at the top of that list. Friday’s opening day saw top-tier programs lock horns, and the games certainly did not disappoint. Walter Johnson and Northwest had a back and forth affair that saw WJ pull away late, Blake and Richard Montgomery went to extras before the game got suspended due to rain in the top of the 9th, and Damascus defeated Bethesda-Chevy Chase in a close game that saw fireworks on both sides of the ball. The county may have departed a plethora of top talent to graduation in 2025, however, there is no lack of talent from the new crop of players in 2026.
  • Close games across the UCBAC. Keep close attention to the UCBAC in 2026, as the parity across the conference is at an all-time high in 2026, and nothing hammered down that fact more than how close the matchups were on opening day. Three one run games opened up play on Friday that saw Rising Sun defeat Elkton 7-6, Patterson Mill defeat Fallston 6-5, and Bo Manor defeat Havre de Grace 7-6. North Harford and C. Mlton Wright also battled it out with a close game that saw the Hawks take the game, 6-4. This conference could easily see anyone of 4 or 5 teams take the conference this year.

Winners

  • Calvert Hall takes over the No. 1 spot in our Week 2 update, as the Cardinals have started the season 10-1 and come off a huge conference sweep of previously ranked No. 6, Archbishop Curley in dominant fashion. Calvert Hall outscored the Friars 20-0 across the three games and has shown to possess arguably the most balance across the conference.
  • John Carroll jumps up six spots in this update coming off their conference sweep of McDonogh. The Patriots have shown the ability to put up runs in a hurry early in the season, and the pitching has certainly impressed, showcasing the ability to win close games without their “ace”, Pierce Quinn on the bump.
  • Georgetown Prep has been a pleasant surprise to begin the 2026 spring, as the Hoyas are coming off a 3-0 week in which they scored 25 runs across the three game set, including a huge 3-1 win over powerhouse Miller School in Virginia.
  • Walt Whitman began the season just outside our Power 25, and the Vikings proved worthy with a rout of Montgomery Blair by a score of 11-3. Offensive production 1-9 with a strong staff at the front-end of the rotation, this Viking team will see how strong they really are with a tough week this week that includes games against Sherwood and Urbana.
  • Broadneck has been the team that has impressed our staff the most, as the scrimmages early on were won in dominant fashion and their opening day game vs. Old Mill ended in a 12-2 score. This offense graduated a ton from last year’s team and hasn’t missed a step in 2026. A strong crop of experienced players and underclassmen have been exciting to see early this spring.

Seeking Improvement

  • Urbana opened the 2026 spring as the No. 1 public school in the state, and the Hawks see a big deficit in their opening day matchup with Catoctin, as the Cougars are winning 6-0 in a rain-suspended game in the 6th inning.
  • Archbishop Curley has struggled out of the gate, starting the season 2-6 after a tough 0-3 conference sweep against Calvert Hall. This pitching staff is deep and talented, and the inconsistencies on both sides of the ball have hurt the Friars early on.
  • Severna Park opened their season vs. unranked Crofton and lost 9-2. This Severna Park pitching rotation is arguably one of the best in the state and should rebound this week, however, 10 strikeouts at the dish to open the spring may be a cause for concern early.
  • Sherwood is the state’s most notable powerhouse, and an opening day loss to unranked Century has the Warriors on their heels early.
  • Magruder entered the spring at No. 17, and an opening day loss to unranked Quince Orchard sees Magruder out of the top 25 this week. Look for the Colonels to bounce back this week with three games, finishing off with a tough matchup with Damascus on Saturday.
