X-FACTOR

The Trevians lose a couple of their main bats and longtime varsity starters in outfielders Trey Meyers (Indiana) and Ben Toft (Iowa), so they will have to look elsewhere for some of their offensive production. One name that stands out is right-handed hitting catcher Keenan Donaldson (2026), who returns a .319 average from a season ago with 23 RBIs and five home runs. Having a sound catcher is one of the most underrated and important pieces to a winning club, especially at the high school level - and they have a very talented one in Donaldson, proving to be a high-level defender that can handle a staff and limit the run-game (1.82 pop-time; T80 mph). He also provides valuable power to the lineup with a 99 mph peak exit velocity in-event, as well as speed that can help on the basepaths (6.93 runner). Still uncommitted, Donaldson is one of the top names still on the market in the state, too.

NEWCOMER TO WATCH

Sophomore Riley Cook is one of the top 2028s in Illinois, coming in at No. 35 in the state, and he will look to play an important role for the Trevians as an underclassman. He’s an interesting prospect from a tools and projection standpoint, measuring in at 6-foot-3, 170-pounds with a clean right-handed swing and savvy defensive actions to go along with it. He will be a sound defender with the glove right away, and if/when the bat produces it will only be an added bonus.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Coming off a strong 29-8-1 campaign that ended in the sectional championship, New Trier enters 2026 with head coach Dusty Napoleon looking to build on that foundation. Despite losing key contributors Trey Meyers (Indiana), Ben Toft (Iowa), and Henrik Conniff (Columbia), the Trevians return significant talent on both sides of the ball.

The heart of New Trier's offense revolves around three offensive performers. Mason Bloom (2026; Trinity College) headlines the group after posting a stellar .356/.436/.901 line with 11 doubles and 26 RBIs last season, while showcasing a 100 mph exit velocity and 6.95-second 60-yard time in showcase settings.

Behind the plate, the aforementioned Donaldson brings significant pop after slugging .937 with five home runs and 23 RBIs, while Nick Sichel (2026; Richmond) provides additional depth with thump in his right-handed bat. The power potential extends to 1B/LHP Harry Resis (2027), whose 6-4, 244-pound frame produced a 1.014 slugging percentage in limited action last year while also showcasing elite metrics across the board, including 100 mph exit velocity and 74.6 mph bat speed.

"We bring back two of our three most impactful arms in Campitelli and Bailey from a year ago," Napoleon noted. "Our pitching depth will give us a chance to compete at a high level. We have a chance to hit for some power and have two standout bats returning in Donaldson and Bloom." That pitching depth starts with RHP Greg Campitelli (2026; Augustana), who dominated with a 10-1 record, 1.50 ERA, and .196 opponents' average across 68 innings. RHP Nick Bailey (2026) provides versatility as both a starter and closer, compiling a 2.60 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 37 innings while notching three saves. The bullpen features several intriguing arms, including RHP Justice Hernandez (2027), who allowed just a .167 opponents' average in 14 innings last season. Resis also factors into the rotation as a left-handed option, while RHP Jackie Ryder (2027) rounds out a deep staff.

Underclassmen Cook and INF Ethan Killion (2028) are expected to contribute, with Killion already showing as fastball up to 86 mph and strong defensive tools.

With strong pitching depth, legitimate power potential, and experienced leadership, the Trevians have the pieces to make another deep postseason run in the competitive CSL South.

BOTTOM LINE

Pitching is always at a premium, especially at the high school level, and the Trevians should feel really good about the arms they are bringing back. Campitelli will look to lead the staff as an established ace, with plenty of talented arms to back him up. The offense is without question a bit different than a year ago, though they still have some thump and also bring back a couple key pieces with Sichel, Donaldson and Bloom. You can always count on the Trevians to be competitive and well-coached, and this year proves to be no different.
