Wausau Preseason ID: Quick Hits

On February 21st, Prep Baseball Wisconsin hosted the second annual Wausau Preseason ID at the state of the art Greenheck Turner Community Center in Westin, WI. Around 20 players from across the state met in the Wausau area to participate in this event, a Preseason ID that is providing our staff with need-to-know names and players to consider for future invite-only events, like the Prep Baseball Future Games, among others.
Today, we’ll be highlighting the players who stood out here within this Quick Hits piece. Stay tuned throughout the week as we continue to break down the in-depth metrics measured at this event, with the help of our tech partners TrackMan, Blast Motion, and Vizual Edge. Each of the players listed below are uncommitted unless stated otherwise.

POSITION PLAYERS
+ OF Ty Rohde (D.C. Everest, 2028) is an upside left-handed hitting outfielder with a history of hitting in front of our staff. Compact and well-built at 5-foot-9, 193 pound, athletic and twitchy frame. Impressed in his showcase debut, started his day by running a solid 7.11 60 yard dash with an athletic and twitchy gait. In the box, he showed a loose and fluid swing with natural bat speed, producing consistent barrel contact through the middle of the field with a 92.0 mph max exit velocity. He is an aggressive mover in the outfield, showcasing clean actions with a strong arm with carry. His 89 mph throwing velocity from the outfield was tied for the top mark. Rohde has solidified himself as a name-to-know in the state for the class of 2028 and our staff is excited to view his in-game performance this spring.

+ 1B Aaron Zimmer (Winneconne, 2028) is an athletic first baseman with a smooth left-handed swing. Zimmer showcased his smooth swing with low 90 mph exit velocities and hit a ball over 300 feet at the event. Zimmer moves well around the first base bag and displayed the ability and footwork to handle the position well. The 6-foot-3, 203 pound athlete will most certainly continue to add size and strength to his athletic frame which should further cement Zimmer as a hit and power threat going forward.
+ INF Brayden Jankowski (Stevens Point Area, 2028) was a standout performer on the day. The middle infielder showcased a clean and fluid swing throughout his round barrelling up the baseball to all fields. He hit with a quiet and controlled move and was able to produce the third best average exit velocity of the day at 87.4 mph. During infield, the sophomore displayed fluid and easy actions and got rid of the ball quickly with an accurate arm. Our staff will pay close attention to Jankowski going forward after his performance on Saturday.
+ OF Henry Roth (Stevens Point Area, 2028) was one of the top performers with the bat and with the glove on Saturday. Roth stands an athletic and projectable 5-foot-11, 173 pounds. He started his day by running the fastest 60-yard dash time of 6.88 seconds showing quick burst off the line and quick turnover once underway. With the bat, the sophomore displayed a compact swing and had the 4th highest max exit velocity of the event at 95.2 mph. On defense, he showed quality arm strength at 85 mph from the outfield. It was an impressive look from the SPASH outfielder.
+ OF Tyler Beaulieu (Hudson, 2028) stands a compact and twitchy 5-foot-7, 151 pounds. The athletic sophomore opened some eyes with his performance on Saturday. With the bat, the twitchy right handed hitter produced a max exit velocity of 94 mph which was 5th best at the event. Next, his outfield defense displayed an aggressiveness through the ball and was tied for the best throwing velocity of the event at 89 mph. Beaulieu will be a name our staff will most definitely be watching on a talented Hudson squad this spring.
+ INF Josiah Oswald (Assumption Catholic, 2027) is a well proportioned and projectable 5-foot-11, 174 pounds. Oswald hit with a smooth left handed swing and was consistently on the barrel throughout his round. He opened some eyes on defense with quality actions with a quick first step showing the ability to stick up the middle on the dirt. He also ran a solid 7.19 60 yard dash showcasing solid athleticism overall. Oswald is an interesting follow moving forward for the class of 2027.
TWO-WAYS
+ LHP/1B Mark Susa (Hudson, 2027) stands at a long, strong, and still projectable 6-foot-4, 191-pounds. Susa possesses one of the highest ceilings in the state. He showcased a fluid delivery on the mound, getting down the hill efficiently from a 3/4 slot with an explosive finish through release. His fastball sat 87-89 mph with slight tailing action, and he complemented it with a sharp two-plane breaking ball that showed late bite at 2,223 RPMs. His changeup sat at 77-81 mph was thrown with fastball intent and offers the potential to be an out-pitch weapon. Susa is also intriguing as a position player, where he utilized a leveraged swing to hammer balls consistently for a 96.0 mph max exit velocity which was the second best mark at the event. His athleticism is further highlighted by running a 7.10 seconds 60-yard dash. He displayed soft hands and smooth footwork around the bag at first base which further cements his status as one of the most intriguing prospects in the state regardless of class.

+ INF/RHP Ryan Dickson (Chippewa Falls, 2027) is a wiry and strong athlete measuring at 5-foot-10, 144 pounds. Dickson impressed as a two-way prospect on Saturday. As a position player, the junior infielder started off his day by running the second best 60 yard dash of the day at 7.02 seconds displaying explosive burst off the line. With the bat, he continuously barrelled up the baseball with quick hands and a repeatable swing. Next, Dickson showcased actions that indicate the ability to stick in the middle infield with a quick first step and soft hands. On the mound, the right-hander had a fluid and well-sequenced delivery and ran his fastball up to 84 mph showing feel to get the ball to spots. His also featured a 12/6 curveball and a tight slider to go along with a kick-change that had late fading movement. Overall, it was an impressive look from the Chippewa Falls two-way and our staff will monitor going forward.

+ INF/RHP Brayden Frank (Oshkosh North, 2027) is an intriguing two-way player. He stands a strong, athletic and sturdy 6-foot-1, 208 pounds. The junior right handed hitter hammered balls throughout his round of batting practice and registered an event best 98 mph exit velocity. He displayed a quick right handed swing and backspins balls through both gaps consistently. With the glove, Frank has smooth actions with the ability to move laterally and has soft hands. On the mound, the Oshkosh North product was up to 85 mph with the fastball driving the ball downhill with the ability to get the ball to spots. The curveball showcased two plane breaking action at 69-71 mph and a change up with late fading action through the hitting zone. The three pitch mix with a quality change up allows Frank to be able to attack both left and right handed hitters.
+ UTL/RHP Brayden Kuptz (Arrowhead, 2027) is an athletic utility player with the ability to cover multiple positions including infield and backstop. His 2.01 pop time from behind the plate was an event best showing a quick release and an accurate arm. With the bat, the right-handed hitter had a 92 mph max exit velocity from a compact and repeatable swing that will definitely play in game. On the mound the right-hander was up to 81 mph with the fastball that he drove through areas of the zone consistently. He paired in with a sinker, slider and useful change up to round out his arsenal. Kuptz is an intriguing follow moving forward.
PITCHERS
+ LHP Drew Stettbacher (Horace Mann, 2027; Central Michigan commit) tossed one of the best bullpen sessions we’ve seen in the last couple of winter circuits to date. An extremely deceptive look from the left-side, slight cross-fire delivery and a low 3/4 arm slot. The left-hander maintains posture over the rubber as he moves down the mound, pumping his fastball in at 87-89 mph with the ability to angle the ball into all four quadrants. His slider plays with larger and late action at 19.2” of sweep and 2,244 RPM. Looks and profiles as an out pitch that can generate both in and out of zone misses. He also displayed a changeup that flashed late movement that featured an outlier 21.0” of HM. The three pitch mix arsenal was downright nasty and has solidified the junior as one of the top prospects in the state of Wisconsin.

+ RHP Cade Heiman (Oshkosh, West, 2027) tossed the loudest ‘pen of the day showing feel for an advanced arsenal, displaying an explosive and athletic delivery that produced high-end results. Working with a high leg lift and balance, he repeated his delivery well to fill the zone with a fastball that topped at 90.0 mph. The heater played with heavy carry at the top of the zone averaging 18.3” of carry while flashing late tailing action. His secondaries are headlined by a sharp, late-breaking slider that features nasty two-plane action and high spin rates averaging 2,708 RPMs and peaking at 2,788 RPMs. Heiman also showcased a high-slot changeup with late tail, giving him a three-pitch mix that profiles as a legitimate out-pitch weapon at the next level.

+ LHP Sam Bresina (Hudson, 2027) is a projectable 6-foot left-hander with a history of throwing strikes in-game. Funky and repeatable stretch only delivery with feel to work in sync with all his pitches. Clean arm action with arm speed and whip through release, three pitch mix the fastball sat 83-85 throughout the ‘pen with heavy two-seam action and feel to locate to areas of the zone. The curveball played with some larger 1/7 action at times while working around the zone, showed feel for a short wrinkle 2/8 slider that he landed in the zone as well as a fading change up that was thrown in the mid-70s. A high-follow pitchability left-hander with more velocity to come as he continues to fill into the frame.

+ INF/RHP Keegan Kinzfogl (Oshkosh North, 2027) projectable frame at 6-foot, 207-pounds. Kinzfogl displayed a super loose and fluid delivery and was able to get his fastball up to 80 mph with feel to get the pitch to spots in the zone. He deployed a couple of useful breaking balls including a two-plane breaking curveball and a slider with an average spin rate of 2,604 RPM. Kinzfogl has a chance to really pop once he adds strength to his projectable frame.
