2026 Spring Team Preview: The Winchendon School (MA)

WINCHENDON, Ma. - “We have a good thing going with the school,” assistant coach Bryan Muenzner said about teaming up with head coach John Toffey to bring success on the ball diamond at The Winchendon School the past seven years.

The Wapitis, which advanced to the semifinals during a 49-11 season a year ago, return an abundance of pitching experience from that 2025 squad.

Will Torres, a 5-6 140-pound left-hander who throws 90-plus, is a four-year starter back. The American International commit had an 8-1 record and 1.67 ERA last season, with a 65/6 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Ryan Arsenal, a Southern New Hampshire signee, had 27 Ks and just three walks a year ago and returns to pitch along with fellow senior Tucker Hunt, a right-hander who threw mainly in relief in 2025.

Two juniors, Sid Strasberg and Sladen Johnson, bring more promise on the mound. A right-hander, Strasberg has gone from 76 to 92 mph in one year after growing four inches and putting on 30 pounds. Johnson, a left-hander, played outfield and first base last season but is slated to also pitch this year.

Sophomore right-hander Matt Wojtazek brings another arm to the roster for Winchendon, which is loaded behind the plate led by returning starter Reed Buckler. The 17th-rated senior catcher in New England is a Merrimack commit.

Brian Murray, a four-year captain headed to Springfield College, is the 13th-rated 2026 catcher in New England with post grad Bradley Carr, who will bat in the meat of the order and can also play third base, is another backstop.

Left-handed hitting post grad Griffin Conley, a St. Michael’s College recruit, brings additional depth along with junior Hunter Schultz, a utility player who will also play second, third and outfield. Ryan Duffy, the third-rated freshman catcher in New England, is another backstop who Muenzner said “has the most ceiling of everybody.”

Johnson, who batted .454 last season, and post grad Laz Giardina, a Marist commit, are first basemen with senior left-handed hitting Sam Connors, the class president, back at second base.

Newcomer Ryan Wirtz, the seventh-rated junior shortstop in Massachusetts, will bat lead off and play short with Antonio Rivera, the 17th-ranked junior SS in the area, at third.

Ryan Ruggiero, the number four 2026 outfielder in New England, is a four-year starter who will man center field. The all-time home run and stolen base record holder at the school, a Bucknell commit, is “a player that gets the job done” according to Muenzner.

Tony Lane, a junior who hit four home runs and drove in 25, returns in left field with Northern Essex CC signee Tyler Marcoux, the 64th-rated senior outfielder in New England, in right.

“We have a lot of players returning that want to work and make a difference at the campus and in the community,” Muenzner noted. “Their academics are good and leadership is tremendous. They’re tight and they care about each other.

“We have a lot of positive depth with our starting pitchers along with a flawless defense,” Muenzner concluded. “We have those two things along with positive camaraderie.”
