Notable Recaps from Monday
Enterprise (4) vs. Headland (0)
Enterprise earned a 4-0 win over Headland on Monday behind a combined shutout effort from three pitchers. The Wildcats broke through in the third inning, scoring twice on a double and a passed ball to take control of the game. From there, the pitching staff kept Headland off the scoreboard, limiting opportunities and preserving the lead. Enterprise added enough offense to create separation and finished the night with a strong all-around performance, including a key double play defensively. Headland managed a few hits and played clean defense, but couldn’t find a way to break through against the Wildcats’ pitching.
Fort Payne (7) vs. Wesbrook Christian (2)
Fort Payne picked up a 7-2 win over Westbrook Christian on Monday, using a big fifth inning to take control. Fort Payne struck first in the opening frame, but Westbrook Christian answered in the third to briefly move in front. The game swung in the top of the fifth when Fort Payne pushed across five runs on a string of hits to seize a 6-2 lead. From there, the visitors’ pitching staff settled in and closed the door, with the bullpen providing three scoreless innings to finish it off. Fort Payne totaled 11 hits on the night and added a late insurance run, while Westbrook Christian was held in check after its early offense.
Holtville (8) vs. Thorsby (7)
Holtville earned an 8-7 walk-off win over Thorsby on Monday in a back-and-forth extra-inning thriller. Thorsby struck first in the opening inning, but Holtville answered with a four-run bottom half to grab an early lead. The game seesawed from there, with both teams trading runs and tying the score multiple times across the middle innings. Holtville regained the lead in the fourth, only for Thorsby to respond again in the sixth and seventh to keep the game even. After Thorsby tied it at seven in the top of the eighth, Holtville delivered the decisive blow in the bottom of the frame with a walk-off triple to secure the one-run victory. Holtville finished with 10 hits and applied pressure on the bases throughout, while Thorsby stayed within striking distance all night before coming up just short in extras.
Bibb County (9) vs. Brookwood (5)
Bibb County picked up a 9-5 win over Brookwood on Monday, using a big early offensive surge to set the tone. The hosts jumped out in the first inning with five runs, taking advantage of an error, a two-run single, and a sacrifice fly to grab control early. They added another run in the second to extend the lead to 6-1 before Brookwood answered with a solo home run in the third. Bibb County responded with two more runs in the bottom of the frame to reestablish separation and stayed in front the rest of the way. On the mound, Bibb County pieced together the win with multiple arms, allowing limited damage while closing out the game. Offensively, they finished with nine hits and took advantage of opportunities on the bases, while Brookwood showed some patience at the plate and applied pressure late but couldn’t fully close the gap.
Cordova (7) vs. Fayette County (6)
Cordova rallied from a six-run deficit to earn a 7-6 win over Fayette County on Monday at Cordova High School. Fayette County broke the game open in the fourth inning with a five-run frame to build a commanding lead, but Cordova answered in the fifth by stringing together hits and taking advantage of a pair of defensive miscues to pull even. The comeback was completed in the sixth inning when Cordova pushed across the go-ahead run to take its first lead of the night. From there, the bullpen closed the door to secure the one-run victory. Fayette County had opportunities throughout and turned a double play defensively, but Cordova’s late surge proved to be the difference in a tightly contested finish.
Piedmont (6) vs. Jacksonville (5)
Jacksonville’s late rally came up just short in a 6-5 loss to Piedmont on Monday at Piedmont High School. Piedmont built its advantage in the third inning, using a walk and a grand slam by Cole Austin to open up a five-run frame and take control. Jacksonville chipped away late, scoring three runs to pull within one, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Piedmont’s pitching staff limited damage for most of the night and held on down the stretch, while Jacksonville turned a key double play and applied pressure late before falling just shy of tying it in the final stages.
Sweet Water (7) vs. Millry (0)
Sweet Water earned a 7-0 shutout win over No. 9 Millry on Monday behind a dominant pitching performance that allowed just two hits. The Bulldogs set the tone early, scoring four runs in the first inning by capitalizing on a pair of defensive miscues and a timely hit to build an early cushion. From there, the pitching staff kept Millry off the board and never allowed the game to gain momentum for the visitors. Sweet Water controlled the game on both sides of the ball, turning in a complete performance against a ranked opponent to open the week.
