Cooper Trinkle
Scouting Director

Our staff began our 2026 Preseason ID tour on February 8th with the Terre Haute Preseason ID held at Rose-Hulman. This event featured a strong crop of underclass shortstops who are highlighted below, along with a handful of others that caught our attention. Read along to find reports on the top performers, along with a follow list that we took away from the event.

Top Prospects

Quinn Lewis SS / Northview High School, IN / 2028

+ Lewis is a name that I've followed for a good part of a year and I was excited to see his name on this roster coming into the event. He didn't disappoint as his 6-foot-4, 195-pound frame jumped out during check-in and he followed it up by turning in an event-best 6.79 60-yard dash. The athletic traits excite, moving his massive frame well in both a straight line, and during infield evaluations where he showed as one of the top defenders in attendance. He moves well laterally with clean movement patterns and raw-but-athletic footwork. The arm works clean and there is some glove-to-hand feel apparent. Lewis reached 85 across the diamond, and that number likely ticks further once he is fully entrenched in baseball (in the middle of basketball now; currently averaging 16 PPG for 14-4 Northview). Offensively, he covers the box with a wide, closed setup with high hands to start. He takes a short load before a heavier forward move leads a direct, steep-at-times path. He was able to create some backspun contact while rotating very well (21+ rot. acceleration avg) and flashing big bat speed (77.7 mph max). His exits peaked at 96.2 mph, and I think there are fixable mechanics that could unlock even more power and consistency moving forward. In total, there is some rawness to the game now, but Lewis is a high-level athlete with a pristine frame and solid tools across the board. High follow that I will be seeing early & often in 2026; chance to end up as one of the top infield prospects in this 2028 class if tools/athleticism continues to trend and polishing occurs.

Hunter Mason 3B / Sullivan High School, IN / 2027

+ Mason is a name we've followed since his underclass days and he showed off the best present offensive skillset at the event. It is a stocky strong, 6-foot, 190-pound frame and he turned in a 7.04 60 at this event, a quality trend with that tool. His batting practice was loud and was where he showed best, setting up in an athletic, relaxed stance with repeatable moves to the ball and plus bat speed for the age (78 mph avg; 80+ peak) as he delivered his on-plane barrel. He produced nine batted balls over 95 mph while peaking at 98 mph. There is present pullside strength with the strong rotational nature and he profiles as a run-producing bat at the college level. Defensively, he showed sound actions with an 84 mph arm across and should be able to stick at the hot-corner at the college level.

Landry Russell SS / Southridge High School, IN / 2028

+ I saw a bit of Russell on the circuit last summer, and almost didn't recognize him as he brought a much-more physical, 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame to this event. It is a high-waisted frame that still projects for more strength, but I was very encourged to see him turn in a 6.87 60-yard dash despite the strength he added this offseason. Offensively, he showed a short, simple, repeatable swing that worked with a loose-wristed, flicky delivery out-front. Best swings were struck in the air from gap-to-gap, reached a peak exit of 95 mph, and was second at the event in average exit velocity (87 mph EV avg). Defensively, the actions are crisp with on-time feet and sure hands. The arm path has some length and he showed average strength for the age, reaching 82 across. I am excited to see how he trends from here, but for now he looks the part of a strong follow in the class.

Mckade Griese SS / Terre Haute South, IN / 2028

+ Griese stood out on our fall circuit last fall and showed well in all facets at this event. It is a lean, athletic, 6-foot, 165-pound frame that is packed with quick twitch. His 6.91 60-yard dash showed that the feet are an above average tool, and the feet were also the carrying tool for him on the infield. Defensively, the quick-footed middle showed athletic actions with some glove-to-hand feel to pair. In the box, the right-handed hitter showed the same twitch in an upward path that produced a rounded peak exit of 90 mph. The swing works with some gap-to-gap feel, and there is room for refinement that could unlock more impact moving forward. Griese profiles up the middle defensively due to the athletic nature and leaves this event as a good follow for our 2028 class.

Bowen VanHook 3B / RHP / Terre Haute North, IN / 2029

+ VanHook showed solid development since his Rising Stars days and left as a strong follow for our freshman class. It is a wiry, athletic, 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame that projects best on the mound. He showcased a quick-paced, efficient delivery with his arm speed jumping out as his most noticeable present trait. The Terre Haute native pitched at 82-84.5 with a carry fastball that he was able to fill the zone with. Both offspeed offerings showed quality shape, and he controlled both; 70-72 SL (2102 avg | 2200+ max) & 71-74 CH (1548). There is some projection / development to be had that should louden his arsenal as he matures, but the three distinct shapes for strikes and quick arm speed leaves me confident in the floor he provides.

Quick Hits

*In-event highlights embedded into each players' name*

C/RHP Brycen Mroz, 2027, Northeast Dubois: Lean, projectable, 6-foot-2, 180-pounder. Loose, level swing plane with some bat to ball feel and fringy strength at present; exits peaked at 86 mph. Showed best defensively as a clean receiver in bullpens with a 77 mph arm from the crouch and pops from 2.05 to 2.15. Also holds upside on the mound as a clean-armed strikethrower. Pitched in the low-80s with two fastball shapes (4S + SNK) while also showing feel for a mid-70s change and a big, mid2upper 60s curveball. Strength gains will pay dividends all-around.

RHP/3B McAllister Sheese, 2028, Northview: 6-foot-1, 170-pounder with an athletic, projectable look to the frame. Holds two-way potential with upside traits on both sides of the ball. Clean, polished, controlled delivery with a loose, compact arm circle. Gets inverted before flipping up to a higher over-the-top slot. Carried the heater at 79-80 mph with true cut/ride properties. Spun a downer breaking ball off the FB with tighter spin (2342) as that pitched looked the part of a future out-pitch. Killed spin on a 72-74 change that flashed above average for the age. On the offensive side, took clean/controlled left-handed hacks with exits up to 87 mph and gap-to-gap ball flight. 7.24 runner that reached 84 across the diamond. Solid 2028 follow.

2B/RHP Peyton Powers, 2027, West Vigo: Undersized, compact, 5-foot-7, 175-pounder. It is a skill over tools profile; best tool was his arm that worked in the low-80s on the bump (T84) with the ability to spin a low-70s breaking ball that averaged 2388 raw spin. Offensively, showed a short, direct, simple swing that came with solid bat to ball and exits up to 88 mph. Showed steady actions on the infield with solid hands to match.
