2026 Spring Team Preview: Mount Saint Charles (RI)
WOONSOCKET, R.I. - The first year as a prep school ended in an 11-17 season for Mount Saint Charles. Head coach Idric Liasu is positive year two will see a big difference.
“I preach showing up every day and competing at a high level in every aspect of the game,” explained Liasu. “The biggest thing for us was getting more physical and I think this year our bodies are in better shape. We just did a Florida trip and went 3-1 averaging eight runs a game.”
But it is the pitching that Liasu sees as extremely promising.
“Our pitching staff will be special this year,” Liasu said.
Brailin Dominguez, a senior committed to UMass Lowell, had 18 Ks and one walk in his first game in Florida and headlines the pitching that includes Matt Chofay, Will Robertson, Riley Barker and Mason Broomfield. Chofay, a post grad two-way player signed with Merrimack, and Robertson, a two-way junior, will both play in the outfield in addition to pitch. Barker is a sophomore showing huge upside while Broomfield, the 109th-rated senior in New England, is a Clark commit.
Depth for the Mounties comes from Anna Maria College commits, RHP Anthony Maturo and LHP Josh Virzi, junior righty CJ Goding and freshman right-hander Mason Kenyon.
Senior Vinnie DaSilva, a Curry College signee, returns at catcher with the ability to play first and DH. Jayden Marcello, the 25th-ranked 2026 catcher in New England and a Saint Joe’s commit, will also see time behind the plate and in right field with Brayden Castellone, the second-rated freshman catcher in New England, having “a chance to be special” according to Liasu.
Broomfield and Brady Slack, who missed the last two years with injuries, are potential first basemen with junior Kyle Castellone, Brayden’s older brother, at second base.
Senior David Medrano, a Maine commit, will be at short with left-handed hitting senior Brady Lecuyer, returning as one of the team captains along with Bloomfield and Jacob Veloz, at third. Lecuyer is a Southern Maine recruit.
Veloz, the top-rated senior outfielder in New England and a Maine signee, will be in the outfield with Marcello, Chofay and Robertson other outfielders.
“These guys are gritty, they love playing the game,” Liasu explained. “They’re competitive. They’re different this year. They’re more mature. They know every day is going to be a fight.
“I think this team has a chance to make a lot of noise,” Liasu continued. “I’m excited about the bats, I’m excited about the pitching staff. But we’ve got to learn to be in the moment every day.”
As for the keys to making the second year as a prep school special, Liasu has his view.
“Defense, pitching and most importantly brotherhood,” Liasu pointed out. “We can’t get egos with all this talent we have out on the field.”
