2026 Spring Team Preview: Austin Prep (MA)
READING, Ma. - More than a dozen returnees that are committed to college bring hope for another outstanding season at Austin Prep.
“The key to success this spring will be playing to the depth of our roster,” explained head coach Jonathan Pollard, who has an impressive 104-8 record at the school since taking over the program in 2020. “If every player takes pride in playing their specific role to the best of their ability, we should have a successful spring.”
Success is nothing new at Austin Prep, which went undefeated in 2022 (26-0) and 2024 (19-0), won MIAA State Championships in 2018 and 2022, and finished 20-2 a year ago.
“I would say our program is known for its depth and playing the game fundamentally sound in all areas,” Pollard said.
The list of returning players is a long one, including University of Virginia commit Bradley McCafferty, the number one senior catcher in New England and 35th-rated 2026 backstop in the nation.
Nick Ranaldi, the top-ranked senior first baseman in New England, Lucas Sarno, the second-rated junior shortstop in New England, and Ryan Moreschi, the third-ranked 2026 outfielder in New England, bring firepower back to the lineup. Ranaldi is a William & Mary recruit, Sarno an NC State commit and Moreschi a UMass Lowell signee.
The Cougars are loaded with pitching talent featuring Elon commit Chase Edgar, Maine recruit Charlie Kubiet and Salve Regina commit Aiden Green. Edgar is the seventh-rated senior RHP in New England, Kubiet the 25th-ranked 2026 RHP and Green the 69th-rated senior right-handed pitcher.
Colten Landen and Jack Redmond are two more senior right-handers that will provide innings, Landen a Loyola Marymount commit and Redmond a Grinnell College signee.
Two senior southpaws, Merrimack commit Brady Andrews and Salve Regina recruit Brent Summerton, are also expected to make an impact on the mound.
Virginia Tech commit Zack Floyd, the 15th-rated junior RHP in New England, is another pitching prospect at Austin Prep.
A pair of Washington College signees are also back in senior first baseman Mike Brosnan and senior OF/LHP Cam Jaena.
“This year our strengths will be our veteran experience, especially on the mound,” Pollard noted. “With 13 seniors, our players have a very good understanding of our goals and the way we approach obtaining those goals.”
Alex Fernandes (St. Anselm), Nick Genese (St. Anselm) and Mike McCarthy (Babson College) are key players lost to graduation for the Cougars, but Pollard sees a lot of promise in the players coming up.
“We have a very special 2028 class and many of them will be taking on sizable roles this spring,” Pollard said.
It has the successful head coach ready for another exciting season.
“The culture of this team is second to none in the history of our program,” Pollard related. “These guys love the game and love each other even more. Our depth creates tremendous internal pressure that ensures everyone is practicing and playing to the greatest of their potential.
“We are very grateful for the teams we have on the schedule this spring,” Pollard added. “The ability to compete against so many talented programs will only make us better.”
