2026 High School Team Preview: Detroit Catholic Central Shamrocks
NOVI - With 19 returning players, few teams in the state are more experienced in 2026 than Detroit Catholic Central.
“We are also loaded with ’28 and ’29 talent,” noted head coach Ryan Rogowski, whose team finished 20-17 a year ago, losing to Novi in districts. “It should be a fun season!!”
Dylan Fairchild, Bennett Thompson, Andrew Mahoney and Cam Swearingen are all senior captains that will go on to play baseball in college while Dom Recchione, “one of the best young men we have ever coached” in the eyes of Rogowski, is the other captain for the Shamrocks.
The 105th-ranked 2026 shortstop in the nation and No. 2 in Michigan, Fairchild is a four-year starter who will be heading to the University of Cincinnati in the fall. “The best shortstop in the state” and a Mr. Baseball candidate this year according to Rogowski, Fairchild, who will leadoff and also pitch this season, hit .330 with 10 doubles a year ago.
Thompson, a four-year starter and two-year captain, will bat behind Fairchild and play second base. The Michigan State signee, a switch-hitter called by Rogowski - “the best athlete in the state” - will also pitch and catch for the first time since an injury freshman year.
Mahoney, the second-rated 2026 left-handed pitcher in Michigan, a four-year-starter and two-year captain signed with Cincinnati, was 5-2 with a 1.47 ERA last season and expected to be the staff ace this year.
Swearingen, a fullback on the state championship football team this past fall, is a Saginaw Valley State commit ranked sixth in the state among senior catchers. “A tremendous athlete that has waited patiently for his time to shine and our vocal leader,” according to Rogowski, Swearingen is also expected to play third, first and DH when not behind the plate.
Recchione, another two-year captain and “heartbeat of the team” says the head coach, had a 2.40 ERA in 36 innings a year ago.
A loaded senior class also includes returnees that have committed to college in Landon Bonnell, Van Smedley, Lincoln Thompson and Nick Garnick.
Bonnell, is a left-handed pitcher who has signed with Kalamazoo College with Smedley another southpaw hurler who is an Adrian College commit. Thompson, an outfielder, is a Macomb CC commit, while Garnick, a first baseman, will play at Henry Ford CC in the fall.
Tommy Maxwell is coming off Tommy John and will DH with hopes of pitching at the end of the season. Another senior is Mikey Laser, who will pitch and compete for time at third base this year. Last season the right-hander had a 0.643 ERA in 32 innings on the mound.
Owen Geisler, Logan Rozum, Evan Tappy and Charlie Fay are other seniors fighting to get on the field. Geisler and Rozum are looking for time in the infield, Tappy is a left-handed hitting first baseman/LHP and Fay a right-handed pitcher.
“We have senior leadership with 15 seniors returning, and 19 overall players back,” Rogowski said about what he likes with this year’s squad. “We have great pitching and great defense.”
Two juniors will play important roles this season, Jaxon Gatt and Tyler French. Gatt, “a tremendous athlete” according to Rogowski, is a three-year varsity player that will also pitch in addition to being in the outfield. French is a left-handed hitting catcher who can also play outfield
Ben Raskey and Kyle Davis are other juniors ready to contribute, Raskey on the mound and Davis at first base and DH.
A pair of 10th graders are also in the mix. Luke Fairchild, the fourth-ranked sophomore shortstop in Michigan, hit .291 as a freshman and will play third and outfield this season. Josh Seubert is being counted on to pitch and compete for time in the field. Last year the sohpomore right-hander threw 16.1 innings with 19 Ks and a 2.10 ERA.
“The key to a long tournament run is the Shamrocks versus the Shamrocks,” Rogowski said. “Our opponent is us. If we can play for each other, this team can be extremely special.”
