Beckman vs Tustin

Les Lukach, State Scouting Director, California

‘26 RHP Carter Head, Beckman - Air Force signee

Head was masterful in this outing as the future Air Force Falcon tossed a No Hitter in the “Battle of Tustin” bragging rights. The 6’2” 190-pound righty collected a clean dozen strikeouts against no walks. He was an HBP away from a perfect game. With a fastball that worked in the 85-87 mph range, it was his devastating curveball at 72-74 mph that kept hitters guessing throughout the outing. He induced 17 whiffs with the breaking ball and landed it for strikes looking seven times in the outing, often throwing it with two strikes. The curveball is sharp with late breaking action, and though he sometimes pulls it away to righties, he starts the pitch in or over the heart of the plate giving the hitter the idea that it will finish in the zone. Head worked the fastball to all quadrants often getting whiffs (19) with the pitch. When the pitch was hit, it resulted in routine fly balls mainly on the infield with two going beyond that to the outfielders. Head maintained his velo throughout the outing as his fastball was still 86 mph in the seventh inning. There’s some projection on the frame, as Head has a sturdy lower half with broad shoulders that could take on more mass.
