2026 Spring Team Preview: Hamden Hall (CT)

HAMDEN, Ct. - Hamden Hall has captured four consecutive New England Preparatory School Athletic Council championships. Is number five in the near future?

Head coach Brad Chernovetz sees that as a possibility, as well as taking home a Fairchester Athletic Association title, something the Hornets did in 2022 and 2024 under the direction of the seventh-year mentor.

“We should be one of the top three teams in the league with Brunswick and Greenwich Country Day School,” Chernovetz said. “We also should be in the running for the NEPSAC championship again for the fifth year in a row.”

Four key members of last season’s 14-7 squad return to go along with a pair of promising new players that Chernovetz believes will help make up for the graduation loss of Logan Charboneau, the 14th-ranked 2025 graduate in New England who is now playing at the University of Connecticut.

Amato Civitello and Nicolas Scillia headline the returnees for Hamden Hall. Civitello, the seventh-rated senior shortstop in New England, batted .429 with a .571 OBP and 1.397 OPS in 2025, belting six home runs out of 27 hits. Scillia, the 47th-ranked 2026 right-handed pitcher in New England, is the top hurler back for Hamden Hall after striking out 43 in 44 innings last year, posting a 2.86 ERA. Civitello is a UConn commit while Scillia will head to the University of Rhode Island in the fall.

Two other important clogs in the lineup are back from a year ago in Billy Cole and Jey Scanlon. A Wesleyan recruit, Cole produced a .303 batting average in 2025 with a .435 OBP and .924 OPS. Scanlon, an uncommitted junior, hit .296 with a .455 OBP and .954 OPS.

Sam Castro and Brian Anderson are newcomers being counted on to play key roles this season. Castro, the FCIAC Player of the Year in 2025, is a junior infielder while Anderson is a junior left-handed pitcher.

“Pitching and defense are our strengths,” explained Chernovetz. “I like having 13 pitchers. They all can throw strikes.”

There is more that the head coach has praise for about his squad.

‘I like that we are a senior-led team,” Chernovetz said. “The biggest question is can the bottom third of the order produce.”

The Hamden Hall leader, whose “goal with the program is to get kids to play in college and play the best out of league schedule possible,” points to a couple of important items when it comes to the upcoming season.

“The key is to get off to a quick start, and also finding somewhere to go outside and play,” Chernovetz said.
