Mississippi Diamond Notes: Week 2

Mississippi Diamond Notes returns for the 2026 season, spotlighting standout performances from across the state based on nominations submitted by high school coaches. Each Wednesday throughout the season, we will recognize position players, pitchers, and two-way contributors who have earned attention with their on-field performances.

We appreciate the many coaches who took the time to submit nominations this week. 👏

MISSISSIPPI DIAMOND NOTES: WEEK 2

PITCHING

+ Jackson Meehan (Northwest Rankin) turned in a strong two-way week for the Cougars. On the mound, he worked five innings against Clinton, allowing no earned runs while striking out five. At the plate, Meehan was just as impactful, going 9-for-13 with three doubles and a home run to pace the offense.

+ Tanner Boswell (Houston) was dominant against Water Valley, tossing a six-inning shutout. He scattered just two hits, issued one walk, and racked up nine strikeouts in a highly efficient outing.

+ Bankston Walters (PCS) delivered a gem on the mound, throwing six innings of no-hit baseball in the Bobcats’ win over Pass Christian. Walters didn’t issue a walk and punched out 12 hitters in a commanding performance.

+ Tyner Flynt (PCS) went the distance in a five-inning complete game win over Greene County. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out 11, overpowering hitters throughout the outing.

+ Braedyn Lackie (Hamilton) was sharp from start to finish, firing a complete-game one-hitter in a win over Amory. He struck out 11 batters and kept the opposing lineup off balance all night.

+ Cooper Hill (Hamilton) logged a complete-game victory over Mantachie, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out five. Hill battled through the outing and gave the Lions a strong start.

+ Trevor Bateman (Strayhorn) tossed seven strong innings in a win over Southaven. He allowed four hits and no earned runs while collecting nine strikeouts to anchor the Mustangs on the mound.

+ Noah Williams (Northwest Rankin) threw a five-inning complete-game shutout against Lafayette. He surrendered just two hits and struck out six in a clean, efficient outing.

+ Dalton Pixley (Northwest Rankin) delivered six shutout innings in a win over DeSoto Central, striking out nine. Pixley also contributed offensively, going 4-for-10 on the week with a grand slam.

+ Cooper Long (Heritage Academy) turned in a strong performance despite taking the loss against Grenada. He worked seven innings, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out 11.

+ Carson Renfro (Grenada) was electric on the mound, throwing a seven-inning no-hitter against Heritage Academy. Renfro struck out 11 batters and dominated from start to finish.

HITTING

+ Nelson Barthel (Northwest Rankin) had a huge week at the plate, going 8-for-15 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, and seven RBIs. Barthel was a consistent run producer for the Cougars.

+ Brooks Crawley (Northwest Rankin) continued to swing a hot bat, finishing the week 9-for-19 with three home runs, two doubles, and 10 RBIs. Crawley provided steady power in the middle of the lineup.

+ Carlos Robinson (South Panola) put together a big week, going 8-for-13 with a home run, a double, and nine RBIs. Robinson was a driving force in the Tigers’ offense.

+ Ridge Mask (Baldwyn) was on another level offensively, going 5-for-9 with three home runs and eight RBIs for the Bearcats. Mask also contributed on the mound with three hitless innings.

+ Ian Nichols (Hamilton) enjoyed a productive week, finishing 5-for-10 with a double, a home run, six runs scored, and five RBIs. Nichols consistently found his way on base and impacted the game in multiple ways.

+ Austin Sanders (Pisgah) stayed locked in at the plate, going 7-for-9 with a home run, a double, six runs scored, and five RBIs. Sanders was a key catalyst for the Dragons’ offense.

+ Ty Keys (Poplarville) impacted the game in multiple facets, going 4-for-8 with five stolen bases and three RBIs. He also picked up a win on the mound, striking out five over three innings.

+ Jett Smith (Poplarville) drove in six runs on the week for the Hornets and added value on the mound, throwing 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.

+ Cameron Thompson (Northwest Rankin) delivered timely power, going 5-for-14 with two home runs, a double, and seven RBIs for the Cougars.

+ Drew Butler (Northwest Rankin) stayed consistent all week, finishing 7-for-16 with a double while providing quality at-bats near the top of the lineup.

+ Russ Ingram (Northwest Rankin) capped off a big week at the plate, going 7-for-17 with three home runs, two doubles, and 10 RBIs. Ingram’s power production helped fuel the Cougars’ offense.
